Random files on my D drive started corrupting. I am getting CRC errors (cyclic redundancy check) arrors whenver I try to access them. It seems to be pretty random throughout my files, but it also appears to affect about 1 in 100 of my mp3 files.

I am currently running chkdsk /R D: and it's been going for about 8 hours and is now 19% complete.

It has found deveral errors and here is an example of what it logs for each error found:

Windows replaced bad clusters in file 910
of name \mp3\Megadeth\MEA0B7~1\12-WHE~1.MP3.
Since this will obviously not finish until sometime tomorrow, can anyone tell me if these files will be repaired upon completion of this process or are they lost?

Also, if they are repaired, can I expect them to remain repaired or should I replace the hard drive?

Thanks,

Not a good sign

What operating system do you have? Recovering your exisiting files MIGHT work this time, but large numbers of errors like this may mean failing hardware.

Personally, in situations like these, I prefer to err on the side of caution and plan for a 100% hard drive failure. It certainly sounds like you're heading in that direction bit by bit. It's always possible to flag bad sectors and live with it... but if those areas are bad, it's usually safe to assume that a larger percentage of your HD will follow suit.

I would recommend backing up important files as soon as possible and shop for a new drive. Is "D" your main drive (or a partition of your main drive)?

HD's are fairly inexpensive, I'd back everyting importat up and buy a new HD. Or if funds are no problem soundsl like a good excuse to buy a new system.

I would swap out the HD. You're not in any immenient danger
