i think westphal is the best fit for us, why? he is a proven coach who can win in the nba. he fits the petrie's requirements, he is proven, smart, offensive minded but balance enough to teach defense. he will groom our youngsters and kmart and get them to play better. players will buy in to his system he knows his stuff he's down with the rebuilding strategy and i think he'll succede... right?

plus westphal and petrie kinda look a like.

the problem is its been like half a decade or so since he ACTUALLY coached in the NBA...

compared to guys like rambis, Tom Thib.. who may have been assistants.. have remained active and have been in the game.. sure he is an assistant coach but he gets to listen to the minds like jackson for rambis.. and rivers for thib... im not saying westphal is not a good choice.. but if you were to ask me .. who to pick rambis or westphal id have to go with rambis..

The thing with Westphal is that if it really is just a choice between the three of them, he is the only one with actual head coaching experience. So far we have been quite unlucky in turning assistant coaches (see Musselman and Natt) into actual head coaches. I really do believe we better not stick with what has been unlucky for this year. Just checkout what happened to our lottery chances. Of all the worst chances to happen us, the worst did happen us. :D:D:D

Technically, we weren't attempting to turn Muss into a head coach, he already was and had been relatively successful (GS.)

Natt was not a committed effort to convert him into our next HC, he was just keeping the seat warm.

If they were going to take Westphal, you would have heard an announcement by now. Rambis is going to be the next head coach of the Kings and the only reason nothing has been said is because the Lakers are still playing.

avery wants MORE than the maloofs can and will offer... and hell no!

my guess is rambis.. but westphal kind of intrigues me too witht he fact that maloofs had that hand shake agreement rumor...

but my gut says we are getting rambis.. how ironic it is that we want the finals to end soon so we can get a coach... but it will end with the ugh lakers winning it all.. ugh!!!! no! id endure a few more weeks please! go magic! :D

I've never really been totally sold on the idea of Westphal...the main reason he was so successful in Phoenix has alot to do with Cotton Fitsimmons, who built that team into what they were before him. Westphal is okay, but might not be the answer to what we're looking for in 'development'.

It's not going to be Avery.

I am suspicious of the delay as well since that is what would happen if Rambis was the choice, but Petrie is a guy who rushes nothing if he does not have to so I'm not totally convinced that it is Rambis.

I still think Westphal has the best resume and right personality for the job. Considering the fact that he has supposedly also agreed to the financial terms makes me think he's going to be the guy. I agree that he's the best fit.

Westphal just doesn't conjure up the image of a long-term coach, like Adleman.

I think Rambis could be a legacy type of coach if given the chance.

Guess we'll find out soon...

I still have to agree with those who have surmised that if it were Westphal they would have already announced it. I think I'd prefer Rambis because he's currently involved in the game at the highest level.

My main concern, however, is that we get a coach that won't be in the news, who won't make mind-boggling decisions on the court and who will, instead, mold our young players into a team that will bring energy and excitement back to Arco...

So we did stick with a proven head coach rather than experiment again on turning assistant coaches to first time head coach. Not bad, hope through his reputation he will gain good respect from this team.

Here's to another totally brand new season for the Kings! GO KINGS! :p

And his current involvement at the highest level is my biggest red flag. Since he's been in the same position for the past 11 years. They even brought in Rudy T when Phil took the year off. And then he wasn't the interm coach. And he's only had a hand full of interviews for head coaching jobs. That doesn't inspire confidene when your peers don't even give you an interview.

The problem is that the last two coaches, specifically the Reggie debacle, may have forced the team's hand to choose a guy with proven head coaching experience even if he isn't the best candidate. It covers their butt, because if it goes south, then that "risk" card can't be played. IMO, this doesn't make Paul the best candidate, but the safe one. Add in the fact that he has been out of the league for a while, and his price tag drops, which is a big plus.

Since we've got a pretty good discussion going about the actual hiring in the Kings Rap forum, I'm going to close this thread since it will end up pretty much duplicating that one anyway...
