Miami Heat coach Pat Riley will take a leave of absence, the Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday, citing unnamed league sources.
According to the newspaper, Riley informed the team of the decision on Wednesday morning and an interim replacement was not immediately named.
The Heat are scheduled to play the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday before embarking on a six-game Western road trip.
The Heat, who have been without center Shaquille O'Neal, are off to a 13-17 start and currently out of the top eight in the Eastern Conference.
 
That's very odd, but I would be willing to bet dollars to doughnuts its got nothing to do with the team. At his age, and presumably his wife's or whatever, health related?

Correct. Yeah, I thought it would be odd too and unlikely that he'll leave because of the losing (Although Cold Pizza made it sound like it could be that at first).

ESPN says it' because of hip and knee surgery.

Makes sense.

Dollars to doughnuts..it's 'cuz of the losing. PJ had hip replacement surgery and a freakin' angioplasty(sp) and returned soon. He didn't take a leave.
My bet is that he won't return unless they dig themselves out of the hole they're in.

(I'm no PJ fan either)

Oh please, Phil's recovery time was training camp, and he let his assistants run it. Riley is in the middle of the season -- if its something that needs fixing, he needs to take the time to get it done now if he's going to be back in time to lead them through the stretch run.

He's taking Shaq's approach to the reg season.
