P.J. Carlesimo Anyone?

I like him, and always have. I think he's a guy that got screwed by his inexperience at the NBA level in one job and one crazy immature athlete and his own short temper in another. He has worked for one of the top coaches in the game (arguably the best) the past 6 years, and *this is important*, a coach that has a solid rapport with players that may have taught PJ a little bit about what sort of savvy is needed at this level. I know that the Maloofs know him a little, and Geoff is familiar with him as well. It would buy us time from a PR standpoint to avoid looking like we're hastily settling on a second option, and be a nice measured hire by all standards.

Don't forget, coming from EMuss, he's a coach that could be a veteran voice with ample years of service and hardened knowledge.

I really can't stand Carlesimo. He annoys me on a personal basis (stemming from his absolutely horrendous stint as an announcer after GS fired him), but more than that, he just isn't a very successful coach. 183-222. To be sure he had some really bad teams in there, but he also did nothing with them.

I understand that working with a good coach like Popovich is a valuable thing, but I think Carlesimo like Del Harris -- perfect as a top assistant since he knows his basketball, but just sucks as a head coach.

He wasn't inexperienced when Sprewell went after him, he had previously coached in Portland and was fired after he couldn't advance in the playoffs with a pretty talented team.

I agree 100% with your post.

No no no no no. 6 years in the league. 183-222 LOSER. Never won 50 games. Never won a playoff series (3-9 career). Players hated him. One went so far as to choke him, and just screwed up by not finishing off the job. I doubt any of his teammates would have been terribly upset. Basking in the glory of a vastly superior coach in Pop does not make you one too. If so, maybe we should just hire back Phil Johnson who has been sitting over next to Jerry Sloan for the last 20 years. There's a reason for that -- some guys are just mean to be assistants.

Rather take a chance on a guy who is 0-0 in the NBA and just starting out than a guy who has already proven he's a losing coach. You are nothing and nobody in the NBA if you can't get your players to play for you.

Out of line.

I'm not saying that he's the answer, but I am saying it's stupid to say he should be dead.

I agree, I wouldn't want him murdered but I also would never want him hired in Sacramento for any job. At least our loose cannon Artest has not attempted such a stunt on his coach or cried that he couldn't feed his family on the punny zillions offered him to resign.

I'm not excited about any of the remaining candidates, but I totally do not want any coach whose last name starts with "Carl."

Hire him. Petrie and the Maloofs should meet him at the airport and hire him the same day. End of story. Forget about a second interview. Heck, the second day he and Petrie should be talking about the Kings draft selection. Coming from the best coached team in the NBA imo, if he doesn't have credibility and respect, I don't know who would. If a Kings player doesn't like him, he should be traded - pronto.

Del Harris has at least won games as an head coach. He did take the Rockets to an NBA finals appearance. So he has some credibility.

PJ Carlisemo just sucks. Don't bother with him. He needs to be on your bench as an assistant not a head coach.

Del Harris is 70 year old. I did not have him on my list of prospective head coaches for that reason only. He's been a very good coach throughout his long career, but his days are fading in the NBA.

yes pj sucked as a head coach. but everyone fails to remember that the last 5 years hes beein under the wing of arguably the best coach in the nba. to think he didnt learn anything during those years that he would apply as a head coach is just stupid

Under that theory, than any of the Rambis/Shaw type candidates can say at least as much, but without the looming personality issues and proven track record of failure.

We can NOT afford to have another coach who rubs the players the wrong way. It would be disaster to an already fractured locker room. And actually may be precisely why he will not get a look -- the Maloofs said the ont thing they were focused more on this year was personality and how he would mesh with players. With a guy with Carlesimo's history, how could you ever take a gamble on that?

According to everything I'm reading and it's quite a bit - Seattle is down to three coaches under strong consideration: PJ, Carlisle, and the Minnesota assistant whose name escapes me at the moment.

Do you mean Dwayne Casey? he was Minny's old head coach, but one of Seattle's assistant's before taking over the Wolves. Been rumored they wanted him back. Tehy are right to focus on defense, but sheesh, Casey might be the best bet, but those are NOT the three coaches I would want to be choosing among to try to break in a young megastud like Durant, playing alongside Allen and maybe Lewis. Let's see, a screamer who make everybody want to leave? Or a walk it up slug it out coach with your trio of run n gun perimeter guys. Or Casey? Think you gamble on Casey.

Yep, Casey is the dude. Just had a mental block in the middle of watching the blow out game one of the finals. I suppose he's under consideration, but they'll probably wait to the playoffs are over and choose between PJ and Carlisle. Just a hunch.

This is the one point that is the most important of all. We CANNOT afford another mistake in the coaching selection. Carlesimo is just too big of a risk without the tantalizing temptation of having a successful record on his own. Some people are much better in assistant slots than ever promoting up to the top slot. I think Carlesimo could be the poster guy for that conclusion.

I don't even see Carlisimo as a "risk". He is a proven entity. And that entity was a failure in all its machinations. The guy has coached over 400 games thats a long enough track record to know exactly what you're going to get.

If you completely ignore the fact that the guy doesnt get along with his players his resume is STILL completely undeserving of another oportunity. When you take into account he's a long standing mediocre to poor coach, compounded by the fact he's a mediocre to poor coach whom players don't like and won't want to come to Sacramento to play for I have to say my preference would be No.

forget his track record before the spurs. any assistant nba coach with 3 championship rings is a better candidate than anyone else whose name has been mentioned...

So by your assumption Kurt Rambis should be the ideal candidate. 4 rings as a player and 3 as an Assistant Coach....that trumps Carlisemo by far.
