O'Neal adds MBA to his NBA title

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) -- Shaquille O'Neal returned to the Forum on Saturday, not for an NBA game, but to pick up his MBA.

The man who once called himself the Big Aristotle was the tallest and most famous of the 2,200 University of Phoenix graduates at the arena. But O'Neal said he was simply getting ready for the real world.

``It's just something to have on my resume (for) when I go back into reality,'' the 7-foot-1 Miami Heat center said before picking up his master's in business administration. ``Someday I might have to put down a basketball and have a regular 9-to-5 like everybody else.''

O'Neal played with the Los Angeles Lakers at the Forum until the team moved to the downtown Staples Center in 1999. Championship banners and the gold-and-purple jerseys of retired stars still hang on the walls.

``Sports for me has always been, you know, fairy tale life. And this right here is real life,'' he said of his degree. ``This right here means more.''

O'Neal left Louisiana State University as a junior in 1992 to turn pro, and made good on a promise to his mother to graduate, earning a bachelor's in business from LSU in 2000.

For the University of Phoenix, a national for-profit college that caters to working adults, the Big Graduate did online work, and, before he was traded, attended classes several days a week at a West Los Angeles campus. Fellow students weren't intimidated, he joked.

``They would all say, 'You're not like we thought you would be. You're not as smart as we thought that you would be,''' O'Neal said.

O'Neal, who left the Lakers following a well-publicized feud with Kobe Bryant, said his job experience came in handy in the classroom.

``I used my basketball experience working with different egos, to get everybody to work together,'' he said.

But O'Neal likes to be in charge. He previously took courses at a police academy and said he'll aim for another degree, in criminal justice. He hopes to eventually work as a sheriff or police chief and said he met some people in those top positions with advanced degrees.

``I wanted to have the same type of knowledge that they had,'' he said.

O'Neal worked with classmates to design mock sneaker and cell phone companies, though he already had more than a little experience in the business world from product endorsements, his own clothing line and forays into movies and music.

The degree, he said, ``solidifies that I'm a businessman.''

The Big Executive is ready to take on Bill Gates and Donald Trump.

``I could always go and have a conversation with Mr. Gates or Mr. Trump. But now that I have this,'' he said, ``I can really have a conversation with them on the same level that they have their conversations.''

A somewhat "feel-good" story, but it's also humerous how much Shaq overvalues his degree. Although it would be pretty cool if he (or any sports star) went to work 9-5 for 30 grand a year, like a sort of reality check after they retire.

This thread is one huge "straight line". Any takers? Anyone feel like embarassing themselves and offending a lot of innocent bystanders.

I was JUST reading about this in my local paper

Good for Shaq..I mean think about it everyone...he didn't have to go and finish college but he did he didn't have to get an MBA but he did...a lot of people in his shoes wouldn't of gone back to college and a lot of guys in the NBA right now aren't even thinking of doing sucha thing...he may not end up being this big time exec after he retires from basketball but at least he can say that he has the education to do so...even if you are non-Shaq fan you gotta respect that fact

How does one get a Masters in ONE year??
Actually, you can. Alot of Ivy leagues offer one year program for a master in public health although they are extremely competitive and difficult to complete. Shaq got his from University of Pheonix, which is like everywhere, so i woudlnt say it's on the same level.

Did anyone see the 60 minutes piece on online schools? The investigation wasn’t on UoPhoenix, but makes you wonder about Shaq’s situation.

Reading the UoPhoenix site, the university is accredited, but they don't give out accredited college degrees. I'm not sure what that means, but I assume the degree is just a pretty piece of paper and only has value in Shaq's reality.

Gee..maybe I'll sign up for a year to my Masters. It must not be too tough. ;)
its not ... actually, masters is practically a joke once you have your bachelor's degree (this is assuming that you actually know something about the field, and didn't just get through the college with a 2.1 GPA).
Some masters take only 1 year, some take 2, but even those that take two can be done in just one year if you are willing to dedicate all of your time to school.

actually, Shaq getting a masters just goes to confirm how easy it is to get a diploma nowadays.

Shaq can say he has the education all he wants... he would be eaten alive if he tried to enter the real business world. But I don't think we need to worry. I think we all know his heart is really in law enforcement.

Maybe he and OP could team up like Batman and Robin.

I'm a bit puzzled by US's university system. This is not meant as an attack, but here in the Netherlands -- probably because we have so few universities -- at least some basic level is required at all universities, and that level depends on your major (if that is the correct term for it). But -- at the risk of sounding arrogant -- generally, I would say the level is pretty high.
It is probably fair to say that the US has some of the most prestigious, and best universities in the world (pure on reputation in Europe, Yale, Harvard and Princeton would be the best).

But at the same time, you've got quite a few universities, where, to put it mildly, maintain a rather mediocre level.

Naturally, it is inevitable that there are some better and worse ones, since there are so many universities. The Netherlands are just a small country, so it just cannot be compared. But I still find it curious that the variance as far as education level goes, is so significant.

Isn't there some kind of strict official organ that looks after the standard of the education?

It does come off as if the random Joe can get a Masters degree, or in lesser extent, a PhD degree. I do get the feeling, that amongst some of the highest educated scientists and such, anything less than a PhD is not taken seriously (and regrettably, looked down upon. That goes for all over the world, but in some places it seems worse...). But given the huge variance, a PhD says little in itself, without the name of the institution where the degree was obtained.

As mentioned, universities here are all alike, as far as level goes. So a title in itself means a little bit more.

Being a teacher and someone who is currently a graduate student, I can assure you that not all academic programs are this easy. A degree from the University of Phoenix is mostly ceremonial. The sad thing about it is that people in the real world recognize this and those with degrees from a place like UOP, are a little bit scoffed at. Forgive me if any of you have a degree from UOP. These types of schools, however, cater to people with families, and those who are working full time, but still want to have a college degree. I wouldn't recommend going there if one has the means to attend a different school, but for some, it's their only option.

The fact that someone of his stature even bothered to do that shocks me. Someone with the finanacial security of Shaq doesn't need something like UoP. I suppose that because he has been out of the playoffs, he has had some extra time on his hands.

I seriously dont get why some people are making fun of a man who is willing to fork for a MBA while in the priveledged position that he is in. IMO, more people should take after his example...

Shaq wants to be taken seriously in his future financial endeavors. Wouldn't surprise me one bit to see him as a front office suit for some organization one day, that is if he doesn't go the sportscaster route. Would I ever take him seriously? Let's all remember that this man is also the rapping genie of the mid 90s.

I think its an advertisementploy by UoP and it all plays well together. Look at the advertisement they get by just giving a degree to shaq. Shaq gets to boost his ego by saying that he now has a masters, it all plays very well together. Shaq (or his agent ) is really smart in that they are able to make money in so many ways. Shaq was able to advertise for 24 hrfitness saying that he started working out there, he advertised for disney after they won the title by saying that he was going there after the win, he advertised for that restaurant chain and he does those little things very well. maybe he is smart
