NWBL is gone?

Looks like the National Women's Basketball League has bitten the dust. :(

Near the end of the article, Dave King, the former Colorado Chill owner, said that it costs $10 million to get a WNBA franchise with estimated operating losses of $1 million a year. That should be telling (or a warning) for any prospective owner and is something to think about before the WNBA considers expanding.
 
I don't think it necessarily is a warning those willing to invest aren't aware of. Few of these teams are making a profit, the Monarchs I believe made modest profits the last two seasons and may be one of the few teams that had turned a profit. But reality seems to be that few sports team in general are making profits nowadays and that's the risk taken to be an owner.

San Antonio, Connecticut and Chicago all came on board even with the price tag and the likelihood of losing money for a while. I believe other cities have prospectuses in the hopper to buy in when the league looks to either move a franchise or expand again - the bay area keeps coming up as one of the next locale - I've lost track of who comprises the interested ownership group.
