NFL draft

Can't believe the 9ers picked Kentwan Balmer and Chilo Rachal. I like Balmer but at 39 there was way better talent available than Rachal like Quentin Groves, Desean Jackson, Malcolm Kelly, etc. We need a freaking pass rush too so I would've liked Groves.

I liked the Balmer pick. I think he was the best DE available and that had to be our most glaring need coming into the draft. Our second most glaring need was Offensive lineman, especially a guard or a guy that can play multiple positions. I'm not too upset about the Rachal pick. He was the best available and one of the best guards in this year's draft. Many have him ranked second behind Branden Albert. I like Desean Jackson, but I think there are opportunities to find guys of similar skill sets every year and potentially in FA. He is not big enough or strong enough to be anything but a 4th/5th receiver right now and his KR skills, while impressive, alone do not make him a early 2nd round pick. I think Philly took a chance on him in the 2nd because it filled a need for them, but WR is not our most pressing need at the moment. Currently we have Isaac Bruce, Bryant Johnson, Arnaz Battle, Ashley Lelie, and Jason Hill, our 3rd round pick from last year who we still need to look at.

Overall, I'm giving the 49ers draft grade a B. Had they been able to move up and grab a top tier OL like Albert, Williams, Cherilus, or even Otah, I would of graded them an A.

I am looking at out second day picks right now, it seems like we got good values at C and DB.

I'm a little less impressed with the initial picks. Not to the point of a "C" grade but a B- at best. I, too, would really have liked to see them move up and grab one of the OL C Diddy named...

I'm not as upset as Steve Young was, though. I get the feeling he is not at all happy with the current direction of the team - and what he perceives to be the immediate future. I, however, as the typical NINER fan, am willing to wait and see what happens.

I will repeat one thing, though. I still do not have any faith in Alex Smith and firmly believe we will wallow in mediocrity until/unless he is replaced... I would love for him to prove me wrong and would admit so frequently here, but I'm not thinking it will happen.

I remember Steve said that Nolan is trying to make this team a defensive team that can win games 13-10 and stuff after the Balmer pick but what'd he say about the Chilo Rachal pick? I missed that and the other stuff he said so if you could please tell me what he said I'd appreciate it:).

As far as Smith goes I think he atleast needs a shot with a solid OL and good coordinator. Now he has that with Martz and us spending 2 picks on the OL, Rachal I'm not as mad about as I was after I heard he didn't give up a sack at USC. So he has some improvement on the OL, a great OC, and the WR corp was improved. So it's a make or break year for him IMO, but I'm not going to give up on him just yet. I'll give the guy 1 more shot. The only thing Alex doesn't have now is a great #1 option at WR, but I think he has now been given enough to show whether he's worth keeping around or if he's really a bust.

Yeah I guess I agree with you about the WR thing. The Balmer pick made sense to me even though I was hoping for Groves or Merling since I wanted a pass rusher at OLB for our 3-4 D. I'm not sure our 3-4 will ever be too succesful without a legit pass rusher and Manny hasn't shown enough to say he'll be that guy(I do think he'll be good though). But if you look at Dallas you see Demarcus Ware AND Greg Ellis, and both of those guys get between 8-12 sacks. You look at NE and they have Adalius Thomas and Mike Vrabel, Vrabel gets like 12 or whatever but AT did only have 6. You look at SD, Merriman gets 12 this year and 17 the year before and then I think their other OLB had 8 also. Pittsburgh had some guys like that too. I would've loved to get an OLB like Groves. Atleast we'll have a legit DLine for our 3-4 for the first time since Nolan's been here with Balmer/Soap(or Franklin)/JSmith.

I guess I agree with your grade but I guess I'd go more like a C+. I'm actually glad we didn't trade up though, it would've taken more picks and we were already depleted enough after Roger Goodell stole a pick from us after the bs "tampering" with Briggs. I think my favorite pick is probably Reggie Smith the DB. I like Clements and Mike Lewis in our secondary but Harris is getting old and I feel like Roman kind of sucks, so to get a play maker who I thought had 2nd round value was nice and hopefully he can play either CB or FS, but I think he can contribute a lot next year. Harris got burned every other play and Roman doesn't make any plays. So depending on what happens Harris might be able to switch to FS where he'd be able to make more plays and wouldn't repeatedly get burned by faster WRs and then you could start Reggie at CB opposite of Clements.

I guess getting 3 potential starters in the first round is good.

I was touched to read that Rachal would have gone back for his senior year, except his mother has a tumor (stomach?) and no medical insurance. He entered the draft so he could pay for her treatment. I'll be rooting for him to be a success in the NFL. :)
