While there are still some notable restricted free agents out there, the NBA free agency period has settled down for now, and the landscape for the NBA is starting to take shape for next season. After trading for Kristaps Porzingis and drafting Asa Newell, Atlanta reached a pair of huge free agent signings on the first day of the free agency period. The Hawks signed Wolves guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker to a four-year, $62 million deal in a sign and trade that sent a 2027 2nd-round pick (via CLE) to the Wolves.

I mean...If we can replace Keon with another asset, then sure, I'd consider.

Simons can’t play defense and is not nearly as good of a player as Lavine. The ‘27 draft is shaping up to be one of the weakest drafts in the last 10 years.

It appears no one wants to pay one way shooting guards. Simons, Monk, Powell and Lavine etc. Lavine has consistently gotten better in other aspects of the game, maybe this offseason he can use the speed, athleticism and length he has to get to neutral on that end.

No.. But I would do a version of this
Derozan to Boston
Hauser to ATL
Simons/Niang to Sac

But I wouldn't want to see Simons play for Sac. I would not mind buying him out after the trade.

Boston wants future assets for Simons. They allegedly don’t want him and it seems like they don’t want to be competitive this season.

Just as the Kings are finding out with Monk, there are no future assets to be had for these kind of players. The value proposition is they are shedding below the the 1st apron, and getting a guy who may hold some value at the deadline (i'm skeptical) in Demar.

My guess is if they can’t get any picks they will just let him expire.

Simons is expiring.
Yes but if you are going to waive you are going to have more dead money against a hard cap.

That might make him slightly more attractive as a trade chip but given all the cap rules DDR should be easier to move and is more attractive over the next 1-2 seasons to boot.

I would really like to clear DeMar from the roster today but we have to have sensible asset management and I don't think trading him for a more expensive player (in terms of cap hit) you immediately waive falls under that category.

We are talking a 2.9 million dollar cap hit difference.
I'm assuming the team is basically done, but I understand things change at the deadline so that flexibility being open could be* important.

I'm fairly confident if we did this trade and told Simons, "we have no interest in playing you, we are happy to buy you out if you give up a portion of this years salary. If not we keep you around on the bench and try to move you at the deadline".

He would be a fool not to give up 3-5 million. Even if he had to take a minimum 1 year deal in Milwaukee. But I'm confident he could get the DLO 2/11 player option deal in a few spots.

Now if you think we will get something positive for Demar at the deadline, I get it. I would argue we won't. And we will be lucky to just get a bad expiring and someone eat his money next year.

We get nothing out of that except losing cap space when we are attempting to make deals and hard-capped. Buying him out doesn't return our space, it just locks up 27 million of dead money. why on earth would we do that?

It's very simple actually. Demar probably adds 5 garbage wins to our total. Ideally removing him accomplishes 2 things.

1. Less wins = Higher draft pick. This is being touted as the draft of the decade. Several future superstars. Increasing our chances of actually creating a winner.

2. More development time for the core. Demar has played 36mpg the last 4 seasons straight. Those minutes would instantly go to Keon, Carter, and Nique.

Short term pain, for a long term gain. I'll never understand how Kings fans continue to buy into this middle of nowhere garbage that Vivek pushes on us year after year. It's insanity to me.

Re: The statement I've put in bold text

To @pdxKingsFan's point, taking on Simons' salary will make that a bit difficult to accomplish. Especially when we're a team that actually needs to establish some cap space in order to do anything substantial for future growth potential.

I just don't see Demar fetching anything positive at the deadline. I truly hope I'm proven beyond wrong. I hope Perry is a wizard and finds a team willing to give a 1st, young player, or at least a handful of 2nds.
I'm so happy to eat crow.
But I won't believe it until I see it.

This move opens up that extra 10 million of dead money from next year. I'm looking at next year and beyond.

A player with LaVines offensive bag, efficient and constant scoring being a net neutral defender would be a wet dream, and a superstar in this league.
Sometimes all you can do as a kings fan is dreaming though, so i like the idea :)
