Need computer help

I have had trouble the past couple of days. My computer is operating very slowly. It has frozen up several times today. I have to do a ctrl-alt-del to restart my computer.

The last time I restarted (a few min ago) I got the following message:

There are no spare stack pages. It may be necessary to increase the setting of 'MinSPs' in SYSTEM.INI to prevent possible stack faults. There are currently 2 SPs allocated.

Please tell me what it is talking about and what I need to do to fix it.

FYI--I ran maintenance today. I have Windows ME. Thanks!!

You're Welcome ...

Thanks so much, Al. I'll try this.

9 times outta 10, I'll find a fix for mostly any computer/operating system problem.

When looking into solutions, research-research-research .... I'll look and read at least a dozen of the FINDINGS that Goggle brings back ... before trying any of the suggestion/fixes that come up.

Also, consider the source (or the website you're at).

I have been having a problem with my computer, as well. When I start my computer, its already frozen and I can't start any programs, I have to restart my computer many times before I can start any programs. I don't know if this can be a virus or not, if anybody has kind of understand what im talking about.

The Next You Boot-Up ...

Or right now .... try this:

Click on your START button (at the Desktop).
Click on RUN
Type in: msconfig (in the OPEN window prompt and click OK)

Now, make note of how the information is filled-in on this screen.

In the "GENERAL" tab, change your STARTUP SELECTION to DIAGNOSTIC.

Clcik APPLY and follow the screen prompts.

This may or may not tell/indicate to you what your problem is.

Always, read your screens and make notes before changing anything.

After doing the above, you'll see a window pop-up when you reboot. Read that screen carefully and follow the instructions.

It's not as difficult as it sounds .... if you choose not to try it, it's okay, I understand.

There are other things you can look at in this MSCONFIG program utility. One of the other tabs is STARTUP ... your problem may also be here.. In this tab, you simply uncheck programs/memory resident applications you do not want Windows to load when booting-up.

Good Luck

You need to find the System.ini file on your computer. Just look for it using your computer's search function. Then you need to go to the bottom of the document and add this line: "MinSPs=4" without the quotation marks. Then save it and restart your computer and that should do the trick. If not, keep increasing the value of MinSPs in multiples of 4 until it works. If that doesn't work, I'll try to think of an alternative solution.

Argh!!!!!!!

Well, that worked (I think). The message is gone. However, the computer has froze up on me 2 more times. I've had to reboot twice. Oh, my computer shuts off automatically when I do a shut down. It has stopped doing that. It will not complete the shut down process and I have to turn off the power strip.

Edit: I have clicked on Submit Reply twice now and nothing happens. Sometimes it takes me 3-4 tries to post somthing.

I think my computer is not working. That is horrible for me.

Have you tried running a virus scan? And a spyware scan? Spyware tends to bog down your computer A LOT.

Edit: You might also want to clean out unwanted stuff on your computer as that takes up a lot of your computer's memory.

My virus scan is supposed to run automatically, but I will run it myself while I'm at work today. I have not run my spyware scan lately, so I 'll do that too. Thanks!

Even though you have active protection on, sometimees it doesn't pick it up. So just in case you should run it on a schedule. Daily, bi-daily, or atleast 2 times a week.

Are you talking about the virus scan or the anti-spyware? My virus scan runs, automatically, once a week. I sometimes forget to run the anti-spyware.

Anti-Virus Dictionary Updated ???

Is your Anti-Virus software on a subscription update service ???

What I mean is this ..... anti-virus software can only detect viruses that IT is aware of. Anti-Virus programs are MADE AWARE of NEW viruses by having their INTERNAL library/dictionary updated with the newest/most recently KNOWN VIRUSES.

If you installed an anti-virus program last year and have never updated it, what that means is it WILL NOT detect viruses that have been recognized/confirmed in the past year by the software developer of your anti-virus package. The library/dictionary on your computer should be updated.

Same with SPYWARE software .... needs to be updated if it falls under the same scenario.

I ran the virus scan today and it detected nothing. I get updates all the time. Oddly enough, I received an email today to update my Virus Protection. I'll check that as well.

I will also run a spyware check tonight.

get Adaware its awesome for detecting spyware..... update your anti virus program and then run a full system scan... if nothing shows up and your computer is still giving you problems save everything you want/need and format..........

Yes, I use Adaware, and the other one is Spybot (I think). I'm about to go download the newest version of my anti virus program now.

spybot search and destroy?

yes

Okay, I have run everything. Seems to have speeded up quite a bit. I also ran the assistant (diagnostics) for my broadband and something failed. Repair has been done. Hopefully, everything is done. However, I don't see how any of this would have interfered with the shut down.

Not Being Totally Familar with Win/ME ...

I would guess your problem with shutting-down is a program may be running in the background.

Prior to shutting down .... try doing the "ctrl-alt-del" key combination and see if any programs are still running. When you do this, some type of window (may be called Task Manager) should pop-up and you may be able to view what applications are loaded. If there are programs running, first of all - they shouldn't be ... anyway, you should be able to shut them down right here.

If there are programs still running, make note of what they are and notify the software developer of this. They may have patches/fixes.

Another Thing You May Wanna Try ...

Is right after your system boots-up ... then immediately, shut it down.

If your systems hangs-up while shutting down, boot-up again and do
the "ctrl-alt-del" thing, make note if anything is running, end those programs and go ahead and shut down.

If the problem still exists, you've got other issues. Look into the programs that are not closing/ending properly noted from going into Task Manager.

my dad says upgrade to XP if you can...it's better done...ME has issues...

That is in the plans, Proph, however, I need to get a job in Sacramento first. I am moving out there without employment, so luxuries have to wait.

I know what's wrong with your computer. It's called the FINLEY virus. Anyway Proph is right, ME is horrible. If you can't do Xp then what about 2000 or 98? They're older but better than ME.
