NBA's greatest games at your fingertips
By Percy Allen
Seattle Times NBA reporter

I must admit the basketball geek inside of me went a little spastic when I read the league is creating a digital archive of NBA games and will make the content available — for a small fee, I presume — on its Web site.

Think about it. Every game at your fingertips. How cool is that? All bets would be settled. Did Jordan push off when he nailed that jumper over Bryon Russell in Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals? (Yup. He did.)

We can relive the epic battles between Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain without waiting for them to be aired on ESPN Classic. No more highlight montages, which tend to exaggerate a player's greatness. Actual games from start to finish.

A video library where we can watch the advent of flight in the NBA — when Julius Erving, David Thompson and George Gervin elevated the game above the rim — and the birth of cool, which was epitomized by Walt Frazier, Earl Monroe and Chamberlain.

We'll be able to trace the lineage of the league and prove to the underage crowd that before LeBron James, there was Magic Johnson and before him there was Oscar Robertson.

The project is expected to be completed in six years, but fans may have access to some games as early as next year. The league is archiving the older and the newer games first and working its way toward the middle.

"Many people would probably want to relive the shot that Michael hit over us [in the 1989 playoffs], but I'd want to see the play right before that one," said Lenny Wilkens, former Cleveland Cavaliers coach. "We were down with something like 10 seconds to go and everybody thought the ball was going to [Mark] Price. ... But Craig [Ehlo] ran a backdoor [play] from out of bounds. The thing is, he scored too soon."

I'm glad companies are beginning to realize the potential of video on demand on the internet. Sure, you can already get some of these out there through piracy, but unlike the music industry it looks like video outlets are preempting the problem before it gets too widespread. This looks cool...

Craig, not everyone wants to see Jordan canning you at the buzzer in 89. Some people want to see Jordan canning you at the buzzer in 93 instead.

I want to see Sedale Threatt facialling Ehlo back in 93. Before I die, I gotta see that again. One of the most hilarious things I've ever seen in the NBA. I also gotta see Sedale knocking Ainge on his *** back in 85 for that matter.

I'd love to be able to go back and watch Shawn Bradley's historic 22 point, 22 rebound, 13 block game dating from 1998...

Or that Scott Skiles' game I was just told about...

I think they need to do EVERY game that they can. It isn't THAT expencive to do if they REEEEELY wanted to do it. They could even have sponsors have little icons on the bottom of their screens, like mini commercials, to offset some of the cost on the more popular games.

oh they will- this is the nba we're talking about. thing will be saturated with ads.

Very, very cool idea. I'm just hoping it won't be too expensive. (maybe google will buy it and make it free to download every game in history)

Oh man that made me bust o9ut laughing:D

I'm just curious how much footage they have, and how far it goes back. I'd be interested in checking out Bob Cousy, the father of the point guard position, and comparing him to the modern day guards. Unfortunately, they don't show many clips of Bob Cousy on ESPN any more...

I bet there are a lot of gaps in the 60s and 70s. They don't even have the full game of the 69 Finals (Gm7). On the NBA-produced Lakers DVD set, they use what looks like crowd-recorded footage of the 4th quarter of the 72 Finals (Gm7). However, the stuff they still must have from those eras is still practically new to most viewers.

The stuff from the 80s is the BIG prize, though. Imagine getting to watch obscure early stuff from Magic, Bird, Dr. J, MJ, Barkley, etc.

i wanna see the MJ shot over the Jazz. i remember seeing it as it happened and how amazed i was

That's the one i personnaly wanna see most... I mean I know it happened and all but I still don't understand how he accomplished that when some of today's teams can't even go over 100 and today's superstar players have career highs of 50-60 ish...

Plus considering he was a bad free throw shooter and he didn't shoot 3's(can't remember if it was invented or not back then but I doubt he shot them anyways) that just makes it even more mind-boggling...

The WWE has something very very similar on their website where you can download old matches or promos from waayyyyyyy back for a small fee to watch them on your computer... Glad to see that the NBA copied that great idea. cant waitttttttt

from NBA.com

"In obliterating his previous NBA scoring record of 78 points set less than three months earlier, Chamberlain shot 36-for-63 from the field and 28-for-32 from the foul line, a remarkable feat for a man whose career free throw percentage was a weak .511."

no three pointers, and DAMN good free-throw shooting for him.

He averaged over 50 points that season, and damn close to 30 rebounds. Unbeliebable.
