NEW YORK, May 7 – Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns was named the winner of the Maurice Podoloff Trophy as the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for the 2005-06 season, the NBA announced today. He joins Hall of Famer Magic Johnson as the only point guards in league history to capture multiple MVP trophies and becomes one of only nine players to win the award in consecutive seasons.
The 10-year NBA veteran totaled 924 points, including 57 first place votes, from a panel of 125 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Players were awarded 10 points for each first-place vote, seven points for each second-place vote, five for third, three for fourth and one for each fifth-place vote received.
Rounding out the top five in voting for MVP were Cleveland’s LeBron James (688 points), Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki (544 points), the Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant (483 points) and Detroit’s Chauncey Billups (430 points).
Nash averaged career highs in points (18.8), rebounds (4.2), minutes (35.5), field goal percentage (.512) and free throw percentage (.921). He posted 3.3 more points per game than last season, the second-largest scoring increase following an MVP season (Larry Bird, 4.5 ppg, 1984-85) in league history. Handing out a league-high 10.5 assists per game, Nash helped six of his teammates to career highs in scoring average.
The 6-3 guard joined Reggie Miller (1993-94), Mark Price (1988-89) and Bird (1986-87, 1987-88) as the only players in league history to shoot at least 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3-point range (.439) and 90 percent from the free throw line and meet all the statistical minimums.
Nash guided the Suns to their second straight Pacific Division title and a league-high 108.4 points per game despite the absence of three of the team’s top five scorers from last season (Amare Stoudemire, Quentin Richardson and Joe Johnson). A Nash-led team has topped the league in scoring for five consecutive seasons, making Nash the first player to be part of the league’s highest scoring squad for five straight years since Alex English and Dan Issel led the Nuggets from 1980-85.
The NBA MVP trophy is named in honor of the late Maurice Podoloff, the first commissioner of the NBA who served from 1946 until his retirement in 1963.

It's funny how they posted this the day after the Lakers Suns Game 7. We were just talking about this yesterday before the game started...whoever won game 7 would be the MVP aka Kobe Bryant vs Steve Nash. It's almost like the league was waiting for game 7 to be over so they could finally announce/decide who the MVP was...

Conspiracy? I think not...

You're kidding, right? The votes were tabulated and the results leaked to the press almost a week ago. All that remained was the official announcement.

There was NEVER any doubt that it would be Steve Nash. Considering Kobe placed FOURTH, your theory simply doesn't hold water.

Never let facts get in the way of a good conspiracy...

I agree with Nash being the winner but I can't believe he ran away from the pack like that I though Lebron would be extremely close being grouped with Jerry West and MJ with their records and MJ and Jerry West both won the MVP that year. I'm amazed by the run away Nash got on the pack.

What surprises me is that Nash was a runaway winner. I thought the vote would be much closer with Nash, Kobe, LBJ and Dirk in some order. Can't really complain about any of those four winning it, but I have to think that voters are severly underestimating Suns roster and D'Antoni as a coach if they see so much difference between what Nash acomplished and what the rest of the pack did.

Interstignly, only one player (Kobe) among top vote getters can actually play on defense as well.

A small, modest, white, point guard. A Canadian with bad hair. Amazing. It must have been an honest vote because it doesn't seem to fit the professional basketball demographic. He even played soccer for crying out loud.

Did John Stockton ever win the NBA MVP?

No.

I wonder where Nash will be placed in the pantheon of all-time PGs now. Two MVPs which the only othr PG to accomplish was Magic but I don't think Nash is a top four all-time PG personally. Below Magic, Stocton, Isiah, Payton. Who else? Is he better than Kidd was at his best?

I think Steve Nash is a better point guard than Gary Payton was at his prime. Not sure about Isiah Thomas or Jason Kidd. I think John Stockton was the most under-appreciated point guard in NBA history. Nash seems to be getting the praise that Stockton always deserved.

Nash is simply outstanding.

Nash is firmly behind all of them, which is why this MVP business is so bizarre. I agree with Bill Simmons; last year was a quirky year and Nash made as much sense as anybody, but this year Kobe and Lebron dominated the league and Dirk had a fantastic year on a 60 win team. Kidd was much better than Nash as well. Nash plays only one end of the floor, whereas all the other PGs mentioned played solid, if not great, defense. Only Magic was a little suspect on D, but still solid and able to rotate well and rebound.

I think Lebron should have been MVP followed by Nash and Kobe. I like Chauncey Billups but is he really worthy of MVP nomination??? Great player but he has a great supporting cast around him. I think MVP should be the player that, if you take him off his team, they wouldn't be where they are at.

i think that the mvp should be given to the one player that is wanted by every team in the league. if you were to ask any team to get a player, it would be kobe bryant and thats why the lakers would never give him up. yes some ammount of success has to be acheived in order for consideration to be given and i still think that for kobe to take his group of challenged players to a 3-1 lead over the suns shows that he has it in him to be the most "valuable" player in the league. not just to thier team. nash is just fortunate to be on that team. if he were in dallas still we know that there would be a different mvp.
