Monarchs waive DeMya Walker!

#4
Since DeMya was going to be out this entire season because of her injury, I can only presume that it was done for salary cap reasons.

wow !

definitely harsh sounding, i hope DeMya will still be rehabbing with the
Monarch medical staff .... it must make some kinda cap-wise sense ... her statement didn't seem bitter at all ... i guess it's business, and hopefully not personal ...

Quote:Earlier this year, the Monarchs had designated Walker as a "core player," protecting the 6-foot-3 veteran from free agency but also granting her the league's maximum salary of about $95,000 a season.

But because Walker's season-ending injury happened overseas, the Monarchs had to either waive her or include her salary under the salary cap of $750,000, said Monarchs general manager John Whisenant. Otherwise, she could have been suspended and the Monarchs retain her rights.

"To not have her was damaging to the franchise," Whisenant explained. "But to not have the player or the money was really devastating. She represents almost one-seventh of our salary cap. We could keep two young players. Our hands were tied. We needed the money to hire someone else to do that job this season."

I was actually wondering if this would be the end result. He couldn't have her salary on the books when he needed to pay other players.

What are you gonna do. We don't have the luxury to keep her Officially on the books.

Talked to some people in MS&E today at the Meet the Monachs event. Their hope is that she'll clear waivers, then be spending the season rehabing here in Sacramento.

As a free agent next season, she can do as she wishes, but the team wants her to stay.

I don't see why she wouldn't - who is going to pick up an injured player out for the year at 1/7 the salary cap on the last year of their contract??? It would be utter stupidity if they did.....

geez, i hope u r right! I would hate to see her play for someone else. What a bummer, i was really lookin foward to see her new and improved play this season. The team still feels incomplete without her...to me at least
