Mike in ESPN article on NBA homepage!!!!!!!!

The Hammer

All-Star
http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/7654643/sacramento-city-council-begins-kings-arena-debate

"One fan wore an old Phoenix Suns jersey of Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson -- a former NBA All-Star -- among the scores of Kings signs and jerseys in the crowd. A group of about 120 supporters of the plan wore white T-shirts with black letters that read "5 Votes," signifying the amount needed for approval from the nine-member council.

"This is bigger than basketball," said Michael Tavares, one of the leaders of the group called #Fans, which stands for Fund the Arena Now Sacramento. "It's about making Sacramento a destination."

Those who opposed the arena plan seemed to be in the extreme minority."

Woohoooo!!!!

Wtg Mike Tavaras (Mike0476)!!!!!

Thanks Mike for all you've done! I'd offer to kiss you but I don't think either of us really wants that.

Mike thanks for everything. You were a huge part in all of this.

Ive got my old school Phx KJ jersey and id happily wear it everyday in Sacto

The article also brought up Mike Barnbaum(the man with the hardhat who sang) and Kim Sloan(the crazy witch who is a condescending jerk and is incredibly uneducated about the arena).

Thanks for posting this.

THANKS to Mike and all the other #FANS.

Agreed. I really appreciate all you've done Mike, and the other members of fans. You were 1 of the driving forces behind this, and now we can come to Kings games for the next 40 years. You just kept the team in town until I'll be like 60. That's amazing.

You know, I actually really warmed to her last night...a lot. We're passionate about the arena, but the things she is passionate about are important, too. The homeless and poor in Sacramento. How much a tiny fraction of $255 million could do to help them. The city needs revenue to pay for services and I feel developing and revitalizing the rail yards will go a long way to generating and increasing the city's revenue. Not just from the arena, but from the whole railyards and eventually downtown, in general.

I could certainly stand up there by her on issues she talked about. She may not always present herself well, but her passion for the poor is not crazy or dumb. In the long run, for me, it really better not end up that we made a decision in favor of an arena/business interests and it takes away help for the neediest in Sacramento. I want wins for both.

Mike: I can't possibly thank you enough for everything you've done. You have consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty. I'm so glad I showed up at that first meeting for a cup of coffee. You gave me a way to make my voice heard and you surrounded me with people who multiplied my voice a thousand times. I know I wasn't much help as things really heated up, but I am proud to be a member of #FANS. I hope Warhawk has gotten the news and I thank him. :) Thank you Captain Factorial for being there from the start, too.

We all want to live in a society without poverty and homelessness, and where the schools are great. That's a no brainer. What Kim fails to see, is that the way you generate money for that kind of thing is to have a thriving economy. Her basic error is in presenting a false choice between the arena deal and using money for the homeless and education. Where else does money for services come from other than taxes from increased property values (residential and commercial), increased economic activity, etc?

If this arena spurs a bunch of commercial and residential development and economic growth, and causes more people coming from outside Sac City limits to spend money within City limits, all the sudden your general fund is getting a boost without spending anything from the general fund in the first place. It's basically leveraging some currently unused parcels of land, and future parking revenue from the project itself to put more money in the general fund. I don't know what better way you could increase general fund revenue without spending from the general fund, other than this EXACT deal.

Furthermore, if we had failed to act, as Kim would have preferred, then the Kings leave, our economy takes a hit, and there is LESS money in the general fund to pay for services for the homeless and for education. It doesn't take a whole lot of vision to see all this, but if you're blinded by your own aggression (no matter how saintly your causes are), then you won't be able to see this. She's too invested in being "right". It's almost like her saintly causes provide her a justification to act like a total and complete *** to others in public (and let's face it, that's exactly what she was).

So it's more than a little ironic that she's arguing against the arena because she wants to spend that money on the homeless and education, but that the exact best deal on the table to do exactly what she wants, is to do this arena deal.

If Kim studied the deal in any kind of detail, she would easily see this. Since she can't, and apparently didn't, her getting up there and ranting about those issues just seems like a publicity stunt or a way to just indulge her own aggression. I wonder if she's had even a ten minute conversation with someone who understands the arena deal and can argue the benefits of it as related to her concerns. And I don't mean a confrontation, I mean a conversation. She's have to put down her aggression for that to happen, and I think that's where the challenge is for her.

But I definitely give her kudos for having the balls to get up there and call out KJ (snide as it was), for what she believes in, misinformed or misguided as it may have been.

I agree with all your points and find her theatrics and rudeness distasteful. I just can't hate her, because she does intend good, even if she is misguideed in how to help.

Its easier for me to be mad at people who are just selfish and only care about themselves and don't really care who might get hurt in the process.

Thank you for agreeing with me. :)

But see, that's the thing you can't hate her. That's kinda where the danger lies. And I mean, I don't hate her. And I do believe she has good intentions. The thing is, just because someone presents has having good intentions, their behavior can still be destructive, if there is that aggression element. To me, that kind of thing is even more dangerous than an overtly mean person. I'd almost wish her to just come out and say "I think my way is the best and that you all are really stupid and complete greed heads and that you don't care about helping people at all and that you only care about yourselves and your monied interests and I'm not even interested in hearing about your way or even having a conversation with anybody about it. And oh yeah, I'm such a better person morally than you are, which is so obvious."

Cause that is what her actions are communicating. She's the epitome of closed mindedness and it drives me nuts!!!!

Eh, I don't know. I agree homeless people and poor people(I'm one of them) are real important but I think that she twists facts and stuff which she knows isn't true. For example when she said (I Think after the meeting was over) something like by building the arena we are building over a spot for homeless people or something like that. She refuses to pay attention to the details even though she attends all these meetings, if she paid attention to anything that was actually said then she would really she's shouting over stuff that's not even true and this isn't just taking 243 mill out of the general fund to pay for an arena, it's an investment that more or less pays for itself and potentially makes more money for the general fund. Then she has a real condescending tone that's pretty immature for a person her age. She blames the Sac City Council constantly for the problems that the Occupy Wall Street movements protest about, even though all of those can be more or less traced back to Wall Street or Washington, instead of Sacramento or even the state of california. She complains about homeless and poor people being homeless or poor, but she's opposed to all the things that would alleviate those concerns such as a new arena, increased construction around the area, and more businesses opening up.

My problem with her was how can you act like you care so much, yet are completely uninformed, uneducated on the facts, and didn't know half of what the fans in these arena threads know?

Now, she might have great intent, and I have no doubt her heart is in the right place and she means well. But lesson number one for anyone who wants to cause change is to know the damn facts. Sorry, I found it incredibly selfish of her to get up there practically yelling at the council while obviously not having taken the time to update her facts. If you care so much, educate yourself, otherwise you're not doing anyone any good.

To be fair, she was no different in her uneducated-ness and factless argument than each of the other detractors, the difference with her was her sarcastic do-gooder front.

Yeah, Mike and I were texting during the meeting and he kept me abreast of the vote. It was pretty hard to focus on being on a Maui beach and eating BBQ'd burgers with the phone going off every few seconds, but somehow I managed. ;)

It was nights like that where you needed Twitter. Can't believe that was a week ago.
