Justin Williams tries to work his way into the NBA

CASPER, Wyo. - For a reminder of where he was and where he again wants to be, Justin Williams need look no further than his jersey.
The former Wyoming standout is the starting center for the NBA D-League's Dakota Wizards, whose purple uniforms are strikingly similar to those of the Sacramento Kings. Williams signed as an undrafted free agent with Sacramento in July, but was waived before the regular season began.
Based on his numbers through eight games with Dakota, Williams could earn another shot at the next level soon. Williams is averaging 12 points, 11.8 rebounds and 3.25 blocks per game for the 6-2 Wizards, who are based in Bismarck, N.D.
His agent, Darren White, said things are looking up for the Chicago native.
"The way things are going, I think he'll be one of the first players to be called up," White said.
While Dakota is officially affiliated with the NBA's Washington Wizards and Chicago Bulls, Williams can be called up by any one of the NBA's 30 teams. It is common for teams to wait to call up players until Jan. 5, the first day that players can be signed to 10-day contracts. Last season, only one of the D-League's 18 call-ups occurred before Jan. 5.
White didn't expect Williams would be in his present situation when he signed a partially guaranteed, one-year contract with Sacramento on July 24. But Williams became expendable when the Kings signed veteran big man Maurice Taylor, and White said he thought Sacramento's decision to waive Williams was also, at least in part, a cost-cutting measure.
"I think that that was more of a business decision than it was Justin," White said. "I think he had an excellent training camp based on the minutes that he played."
Sacramento head coach Eric Musselman admitted as much in an interview on the Kings' team Web site shortly before the Kings waived Williams.
"He is a guy that the odds are stacked against him based on guaranteed contracts," Musselman said. "All he can do is play as hard as he can play, and that's what he has done."
White said Williams had plenty of opportunities to play overseas, where the money is often better but the odds of being plucked by an NBA team are slim. Ultimately, White told Williams he should do what he does best - rebound and defend - while continuing to develop his offensive game in the D-League, and NBA teams would take notice.
"I think that was the reason why he wanted to play in the D-League," White said. "He feels that he's right there."

Would be nice...But he's raw offensively so I doubt it....Petrie doesnt like guys who dont have a jump shot, even if they are good at rebounding and blocking shots.

Plus he's over 6'7

This kid could be the next Ben Wallace (not really) and we would never know.

He is destroying every body on the glass in every game and defending very nicely and blocking shots at a great rate. Now i know its the DL but, when he is the best in the DL at what we need the most he might be worth the risk to try and mold him for years to come before some other team that likes athletic shotblocking bigs that rebounds at an alarming rate. I mean KT doesn't shot a jumpshot anymore. All he gets is garbage from his rebounds Might as well have this Kid that can give you something on defense as well right?

Any way the risk vs. reward is a no brainer give the guy a 200k contract for 3 years and see what happens.

I would agree with all that. Especially the reward scenerio, guy would come very cheap and may give us what we need. 3.2 blks a game! Good stuff.

I'm also in agreement with you guys here. Regardless of his offensive shortcomings........the guy can board and block. Give him the minimum and a shot.

hey... brevin knight is out with an abdominal strain and the bobcats need another pg... maybe we should trade hart for a 2nd rounder and sign williams... that way we wont be taking on any addition payroll... it would be lower than what it would be with hart....

I have said it before and I will say it again. Taylor was simply the worst off season pick up for GP this year. And it really gets me that that is why he let Williams go. I would love to see Justin on this team, even if mostly warming up the bench, he would still practice with the Kings and gain needed experience. Perfect from a rebuilding standpoint. Guy has great energy and has potential to become an elite defender.

Yah, it eats me up inside when signing a guy like Taylor who is trash, and not sign a young guy with the kind of potential we are looking for.

8 of 11 games JW played in he had a double double.....
9 of 11 games JW had double digit rebounding.....
9 of 11 games he had double digit scoring......
11 of 11 games JW had at least 1 block......
10 of 11 games he had at least 2 blocks......
7 of 11 games JW had at least 3 blocks......
5 of 11 games JW had at least 4 blocks......

I know this is just the DL, but dang..... You would figure the competition is better than the Big West conference he was in (I think that was his conference) and the guy is still shining. How long until some idiot GM opens his eyes.

It really sucks, especially since we had all kinds of undrafted bigs that seemingly slipped through the cracks in last year's draft in camp and we don't sign any of them. So much for developing good young talent other than guards!
