Mat Cain: The future of the Giants' pitching staff.

For all the heat the Giants are taking about fielding one of the oldest teams in baseball...the performance of the young MAtt Cain in hte last moth or so has been impressive!

The guy took a no-no into the 8th last night, and struck out the side in the 7th with a fastball up around 98 mph. Schmidt is still dominant, but on the downslope of his career as is Matt Morris, but, Cain looks to be the piece to the Giants' staff that should lead them into the future.

Now all they need are some decent young hitters to score some runs. I mean if Cain hadn't been so dominant, the Giants might have lost that game as they have been near the top of the league these last couple days in runners left on base. Neikro shows potential to be a great hitter on occasion, but Feliz is a little too Glenallen Hill for me...a free swinger that either homers or strikes out.

Right on about Cain. This kid is not supposed to carry us but he wants to.

Way off about Schmidt and Morris. Jason is having a Cy Young year despite his last start and Morris has been suffering from Matheney not being behind the plate. We have an awesome starting rotation and you're right, we just need hitting to back 'em up. The thing is that it is June not October so I'm not worried.

We have good young hitting: Niekro (when not on the DL), Frandsen, Ellison, Ortmeir. Alfonzo and Ishikawa will also benefit from some major league experience. If Moises gets and stays healthy we will score many more runs.

We need to find a team gullible enough to give us something good for Feliz. Durham isn't cutting it for 7 mil/year either.

The bottom line is that a couple guys aren't as consistent as they used to be and that we are constantly jumbling our lineup. After the all star break I expect to see a more consistent lineup and therefore more consistent scoring.

Maybe we could sucker the Pirates into giving Freddy Sanchez who can play 3rd as well as 2nd or SS. Not a lot of power, but a solid contact hitter. He hit .291 last year with 132 hits, and is at .315 this year with 113 total bases...almost passing the amount he had last year which was 181.

We convinced them to give us Schmidt for Armando Rios a few years ago...and look how that worked out for us! Maybe it'll work again!

You're right that Schmidt is still dominant, but he's not the same overpowering pitcher he once was...he's developed into more of a crafty vet-type of guy that looks to get you out on brains and not just braun. To me, I see him as having this year and next as peak years, and then maybe a decline, but I do still think he's incredibly dominant and will continue to be effective for years to come!
