Mark Kreidler: Webber casualty of transition

It is amazing how a loss can easily stir anti-Petrie and pro-Webber talk. Why do people talk so much about a player that is the second offensive option and can't play defense for a mediocre team that plays on the east coast?

This was written before the loss to LA.

Why do people talk so much about Chris Webber?

Well, the article came out Feb 23, 2006 --1 year after Chris Webber got traded.

Also, because he meant A LOT to this franchise and the trade made a year ago was questionable at best.

check your dates-- most of this thread was written before the loss last night.

People talk so much about Webber because he was arguably the biggest thing that happened to the Kings. Getting him in the trade for Richmond, his resigning with the Kings, his injury, his trade to the 76ers.. these are huge pieces of the Kings history. Webb brought a lot to this team, and what he did here and meant to this team has nothing do with what he's doing in Philly.

I don't want to get into a protracted Webber vs. KT and SAR debate, but here are some stats:

Kings' overall PF PER: 16.7
Kings' opponents' PF PER: 16.6
Kings' PF rebounding: 11.1

Sixers' overall PF PER: 15.5
Sixers' opponents' PF PER: 17.2
Sixers' PF rebounding: 11.5

So, .4 more rebounds a game for the Sixers, less overall production and worse defense.
Blah, blah, blah....the stats that matter

Feb. 22, 2005 34-20 coming off of 4 50 wins seasons, headed toward another 50 win season in spite of trade.

Feb 22, 2006 25-29 ending a streak of 50 wins seasons, because of the trade

Kings on 2/22/05: Bibby, Mobley, Peja, Webber, Miller; bench: Jackson, Evans, Songaila, Ostertag

Kings on 2/22/06: Bibby, Bonzi, Artest, KT, Miller; bench: Hart, Martin, SAR, Garcia

Clearly the Webber trade is the only thing that happened in the last year. Or maybe it only feels that way to you because you lost your beloved Webber.

Interesting point. Well, we did have Peja for most of this season, so clearly he wasn't the deciding factor. Bonzi > Mobley, so that can't be it. Jackson was hurt most of last season and didn't play much, so I don't think we've seen much of a drop off there. Evans and Songaila had to go because we were running out of bench room and money to spend on the bench, what with Skinner and Corliss (and KT for much of the season) taking up all the bench room...

Clearly, the difference was Ostertag! What were we thinking?;)

Seriously, I don't think anyone is saying that the Webber trade is the ONLY thing that's happened in the past year. It's just the biggest, and the one that crippled us.

I know what you're saying, but transition alone can account for a lot of the trouble. I'm not trying to say that the Kings got BETTER immediately as a result of the Webber trade, just that people who miss Webber tend to overstate the effect of losing him had on the team. There are definitely areas where the Kings miss Webber, I just think it's simplistic to say that the Kings are struggling right now entirely because Webber is gone. The Kings are in transition right now, it's painful (and exciting) to watch, but I like where things are going. I appreciate everything Webber did for the Kings, I just happen to be one of the people who think it was time.

Doing the whole Bonzi>Mobley thing isn't quite so simple.

For instance, Reef > Thomas, but according to some, we play play better with Thomas in the lineup. So, it may be that Mobley opened it up a little more which allowed Peja to play a little better.

I think Peja playing like a scrub and our bench playing like a bunch of NBDL rejects is the reason for our record more than anything else.

I realize the dates on this thread. I was just obeserving that when we win there is a much more positive spin on the Webber trade and a loss tends to reverse that spin. I am with you nbrans.

I think transition's a big part of it. I think lack of leadership is a big part of it. Losing Vlade, then Doug, and finally Webb destroyed any sense of leadership and direction this team had.

You're right, the current struggles are not all because Webber is gone. There are a lot of contributing factors. But, we wouldn't be this bad this season with Webb here. I realize that building the team around Webb with his uncertain health and long contract would have been a risk, but moving him when we did and for what we got just wasn't a good move.

I respect that you felt it was time for Webb to move on, and you're obviously not alone. I really admire that you can feel that way and still recognize that Webb meant a lot to Sacramento, because not everyone does. I love Webb, and I loved him as a King. I believe in the team over the player, and I don't think Webb, or anyone for that matter, should be untouchable. I just think the move that was made was the wrong trade at the wrong time, and I think we're paying for it.

People would be slamming Webber if he were still here. The Sixers fans are ready to lynch him because he's old, can't guard anyone, and he has a colossal salary (2nd highest paid player in the league if I'm not mistaken).

You dont know me wel enough to asssum that I lost "my beloved Webber". Frankly, that ticks me off to read this, since you are clueless regarding that. All I know is that trade did not help my favorite TEAM.
