Burger boosters: It's drawn lots of controversy locally. It may even
have contributed to the staggering defeats of pro-arena Measures Q and R.

But that Carl's Jr. ad featuring the Maloof brothers chowing down on a
"$6,000 combo meal" is a hit nationwide.

It recently was cited as one of the year's top spots by Ad Age
magazine. And now CKE Restaurants, owner of the Carl's Jr. and Hardee's chains, is attributing its recent strong sales numbers to the ad, which shows Joe and Gavin washing down burgers with an extremely pricey bottle of vintage French Bordeaux.

Same-store sales were up 3.4 percent for the four weeks that ended on Nov. 6, the period when the ad was running.

Notes CKE's CEO Andrew Puzder: "The ad ... spoke directly to the
'young, hungry guys' in our target audience who aspire to the dream
lifestyle of the Maloofs."
