Look at the heart...

Look at the heart of these 2 francises, the Pistons and Pacer. With both their rosters devistated, the Pacers make a great game out of their post suspension situation, and the Pistons win in double ot. Even with the odds against both of them. Kudos to the 2 franchises. I feel very bad for both teams for what transpired.

Even though I think that Stern's suspensions are fair, I would like to see Artest's reduced so that he can play towards the end of the season.
It would be priceless to see these two teams at full strength go at each other in the playoffs.
Go Pistons! Go Darko :)

at least indy's bench will be ready to step up for the playoffs..... wish our team got suspended.... lol

I wouldn't say that the Pistons roster was devistated, and they got trounced by the Bobcats. I will give props to the Pacers though.

Well the just AND fair thing would not be to reduce the mch deserved suspension, but to allow Indy to dump his contract under the cap and sing new tallent. That way the Franchise is not hutr, Artest is forced to feel the reprucusions of his acts and the fans see justice done without watching their team go down the drain. It's a win win.

That way the franchise is not hurt?

Somehow I don't think suspending a guy who's the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and the team's leading scorer can be made up for by givng them a $6 million FA exception to go sign Courtney Alexander.

And that suspension is just over the top. The last time a player ran into the stands and punched a fan (and actually punched the fan too) was when Mad Max did it in the late 90s. Another well known nut, and the guy he attacked didn't even throw anything at him first -- it was just taunting. Result of that one: 10 game penalty. 10 games is a lot less than 73 games. And the fact of the matter is the regular season suspension is the one which hurts the palyer -- every game missed costs him mega-bucks. But the playoff suspension is aimed squarely at the heart of the franchise. Its not particularly or primarily punishing the player. Its punishing the franchise and its fans by destroying their playoff hopes in a year the title was within reach. That, IMHO, is out of line and unwarranted

And if you punched out a client how many days would you be suspended for?

Hopefully somewhere in the same range of time as my friend Jim down the hall who punched a client a couple fo years ago.

And if by suspending me for whatever length of time you suspended the one guy who had the specialized knowledge to win a case for another of our clients, and hence almost guaranteed the other client would lose his case, I would have to ask whether that was fair to that client or not, and whether they would really want to continue to employ us.

Well the franchise knew what they had in the form of Ron Artest. Its just like an injury to Webber. He had to miss most of the season. Artest is a great player but what he did was criminal. He deserves what he got. If some other player was fined lesser that is too bad. But there is no way a man act like that and get away with it. Now, I would think twice before taking my children to a basketball game. He should be be serving some jail time for what he did. And so should Stephan Jackson.

But the remaining of the Pacers have shown great character. Scott Pollard looked good in yesterday's game against the TWolves.

Sounds like adodge to me. Your frind Jim who punched out a clint was suspended for how long? As for the anlaogy regaurding speciaized knowlage regaurding wining a case, you of all people should know that there is seldom a solution like this provides some measure of justice for all parties concerned AND had a punitive effect for those responsable for their acts. Highly functioning professionals typicaly "get away with murder" beceause of this for ever. Th rest of the world looks on says "unfair" and the effect on other high preforming professionals is to see this as a green light for bad behavior of his own. I am not sure if you are an asscoiate or a full partner but lest assume you were a full partner and one of your assciates punched out a client, it would seem that you are arguing that depending on his/her specialized talent your would give him/her a few days of with out pay time comenrate with tallent not what happened.

I dodged it generally because a lawyer and a basketball player are not remotely equivalent when it comes to physical altercations -- a physical altercation involving a lawyer with ANYONE would be extraordinarily rare (except of course for one particularly notorious partner at a major NY firm who is infamous for throwing paperweights at associates), whereas the entrie game of basketball is centered around one huge physical confrontation with "fights" on the court itself not at all uncommon. Throw in the fact that the clients in a law firm rarely taunt/berate the lawyers, and virtually never phsyically assault them and you have a much different animal. In fact if a client were routinely treating a firm's attorneys that way, they would likely not be a client for much longer (unless of course they were a BIG client since as always money talks).

Basketball, like any contact sport, is a phsycially charged game. The levels of testosterone and inebriation amongst the players and fans are largely alien to any non-sporting enterprise.

I think the key points that can cross over and be generalized to any profession are:

1) was the punishment consistent with punishment's meted out to other employees previously for similar conduct? Answer = no.
2) was the punishment fair to ALL of the clients/customers? Answer = no.

Remind me not to fight back a guy for throwing stuff at me, call me name or just simply disrespecting me in any shape or form. I don't want to be a criminal.
