Kobe popped Jaric on nose...

Whats not the rules?

And what rules are you refering to?

Probably the rules according to Kobe:

Chapter 3, paragraph 2, subsection iii:

Any player that dares slam his nose into Kobe's elbow when flailing in frustration shall not be awarded a foul. Prior court rulings (see Bibby, Mike vs. Bryant, Kobe) have shown that such contact is the fault of the nose-bearer.

"I'm not in the business of reading players' minds, I'm simply evaluating the play as a basketball play," Jackson told The Associated Press. "And when you take a shot and follow through, followed by driving an arm back in an aggressive manner that strikes a defender in his face, that's what we evaluated to be a non-acceptable play."

That's such a load. In the very same breath, he gives an opinion on Kobe's intent (aggression). Damn, I miss the 80s. I want to join Uncle Rico on his time travel back to 82.

Priceless!

At this point: HE'S BEEN SUSPENDED AND IT'S ALREADY IN EFFECT TONIGHT!

Stu Jackson doesn't think that it was unintentional either:

And are you related to Phil Jackson btw?:

For someone who got pretty snippy about being accused of being a Lakers fan....

you're putting up a strong front made of glass.

why would you think that i cared what stu jackson had to say, based on my posts wouldn't you think that i think he's completely full of it?

um i got snippy because i was accused of being a laker fan because i didnt think kobe was a rapist. that's basically what anyone comes back with if i don't admit to kobe being the antichrist.

It's not necessary to swear or go into attack mode. Take it down a notch.

Not sure if the suspension was really warranted or not, but doesn't really matter. It happened. Kobe flails his arms around a lot. If I were him, I'd stop. :)

That was a brilliant comment by Jackson. It is as objective as it gets.

Of course that the NBA should not change their rules just because of Kobe. Noone else in the NBA does it except for him.
What is the league supposed to do ? Tolerate someone for their dirty play while the other team's players are looking stupid being punched or down on the ground in pain? **** Kobe.

Nobody thinks he's that - he's an amazing player who happens to have a "bad habit" of popping people in the nose and expecting to get away with it. There are other things as well, but that is the point right now.

And you are a Laker fan. No problem with that, but don't pretend to be something you are not.

Wake me the next time Bowen gets suspended for someone landing on his foot.

I'm a little surprised that Stu Jackson didn't give Kobe Bryant a two-game suspension, since the league is never shy about hammering home a message when someone keeps going astray the same way.
And don't forget, Bryant drew a two-game suspension last season for a particularly nasty elbow against Mike Miller, so it's not like this is only the second time his elbows have gotten him in trouble.
I asked Jackson why he wasn't more harsh with Bryant and he left no doubt that he wil be next time.
"We considered suspending him for multiple games," Jackson said. "At some point a player becomes a recidivist, and if this happens again, most likely, there will be multiple games." Complete Chris Sheridan blog

Nobody here thinks that is any better, but that doesn't mean what Kobe does should get a pass....

I didn't say it did either (I created the thread). I think Kobe does that on purpose to intimidate guys from encroaching into his landing space and/or draw a foul. I don't blame him that much if the goal is to avoid a 10-day ankle sprain over a 1-gm suspension (since the league has made it clear numerous times that they don't consider undercutting suspendable)*.

I want Stu to hold true to his word about "unnatural bball plays meant to intimidate" across the board, which he has a problem with. Either make blanket rules w/ consistent suspensions or go back to 1988. I'm fine with either.

* tho the actual players detest the behavior: VC, Finley, Ray Allen for ex

Yeah, and Mike Miller flailed his shooting arm against Kobe's temple before that, drawing blood. He didn't get suspended. Therefore, Stu's claim that he doesn't crawl into players' heads is a lie. He's taken subjectivity even further than Rod Thorn did.

Importantly nut crackers are allowed in the league, they just want to protect the nose ;)

That is as intentional as something could get and somehow stu thought it was a natural basketball movement. He is not into reading people's mind ofcourse, maybe he thought he might offend the gay community if he punished a player for encroaching into another players private area.

Though i would like to try and read Stu's mind

Stu thought that the bruce lee bowen kick to Wally's face is alright since it was not an elbow and just a foot flying in from 6 feet away.

Stu thought that Bruce lee waiting for a player to land on his feet are natural basketball movements and part of the game

Stu thought that Shaq's space clearing with elbows are natural basketball movements and Mutombo's nose was in the wrong place at the wrong time

I am not defending kobe's actions by any means, he intentionaly hurts people to clear space when he has the ball and the defender is crowding him. He intentionaly flails his arms to get calls after releasing a shot. But it is the double standard that the league adopts.

But I think this is all a setup from the league for something to happen later in the season. I have made my predictions during the begining of the season and I think Stern is adding some drama along the way, thats all there is to it. One big show in Vegas ;)

Did anyone read what Derek Fisher said a couple of weeks ago after Kobe took 24 FT attempts - "This is a business and is run as a business" regarding the nba. Clearly the league sees the fan base as pro lakers and anti lakers and pretty much that is the case most of the time. Even fans who are rooting for a lottery pick want to beat just the lakers for the sake of it, there are fans who come to watch a game because the lakers are in town and in particular Kobe is in town. This season Kobe has been getting the best support in arenas outside of LA and has been hearing MVP chants all over the place.

Why not create a sympathy wave for the victim here ;). I see that even some of the kings fans are sympathetic to Kobe in this thread (I know there are those die-hards who will see things their way all the time) and feel that he didnt deserve that punishment. Imagine the sentiment across the nation, poor Kobe. When the playoffs are around it is better to get that sympathy to take care of the business ;)

there's certainly a lot of truth to this. the glitz, glamour, and celebrity of LA can't really be denied. check out one of the cover stories on nba.com today...

Vladetomiller: I think the Bruce Lee kick and Shaq's elbows to Mutt in 01 happened during Rod Thorn's watch. I do know that Mutt actually broke the noses of Vitaly Potapenko and Jayson Williams (and lived to tell about it). The most Thorn did was threaten him w/ a suspension.

Shaq elbowed Bynum in the throat a year ago. Nada. Another natural bball move.

Top 10 Celebrity Lakers Fans

That list has flaws. There's a long list of celebs who've gone to a game or two to promote something or just because they got tix. I've seen Alanis Morrisette, Kenny Rogers, and Michael Jackson at least 1 time attend a game. Robert Shapiro was there once and he got boo'd. Then there are people on that list who aren't even Laker fans. Michael Douglas is a Knicks fan. Then there are celebs who go to nat'l broadcasts to get pinpointed as a promotional tool. John Lithgow went with Jane Curtin, so they could say, "The cast from Third Rock From The Sun". Then there are friends of Magic Johnson such as Mike Tyson, Eddie Murphy, and Arsenio Hall, who haven't shown their faces in years. They couldn't even find a pic of Arsenio at a Laker game. Then there are fans of Showtime, who also haven't shown their faces in years. Walter Mathau left when Magic left. OJ Simpson was the same, tho he's not aching to attend any sporting event since 94. Haven't seen Louis Gossett for years.

McEnroe has attended sporadically over the eras, no matter the team. So have the RHCP. Spielberg and Hoffman are newer to games, not old school, but they do attend a lot for how big they are, esp Hoffman. Rob Reiner has been there for years. Rob Lowe is legit. An interesting character that they didn't name is Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. You don't figure this guy going to sporting events. Penny Marshall is a basketball fan, not a Laker fan.

From 7-10, they should put Calvin Broadus, Reiner, Hoffman, and one of the newer blood who shows up a lot. Send Arsenio and Penny to the Clipper twits along w/ Frankie Muniz.

the point is it has happened multiple times and it isn't acceptable. He got suspended for flopinobli because it was clearly intentional. But looking at how he "follows thru" in the past (raja, bibby, i think he got patterson once) he obviously does it on purpose. It needs to stop and the league is telling him that.

You're a bit late with that, Smurf catcher; Slug posted that in the [OBIT] thread I made for Bad News last week.
