Projected Draft Position: #10-#13

Kingfans Scouting Report #1:
The mystery man of this year’s draft, Biyombo got everyone’s attention this year by posting the first triple-double in the history of the Nike Hoop Summit game. His final tally was 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 blocks and he looked every bit as dominant as those numbers indicate. What makes Biyombo unique as a shot blocker is his wingspan relative to height and his reaction time. Standing 6’9” with a wingspan that’s been measured at 7’7”, Biyombo has the reach of a 7 footer but the balance and body control of a shorter PF. He didn’t attend the draft combine so his leaping abilities haven’t been measured officially, but from watching him play he’s clearly an above average leaper and he gets off the ground very quickly for any player, not just one with his size and reach. He’s extremely aggressive contesting any shot that is even remotely in his area which predictably leads to a high number of fouls and even some non-calls which would probably be fouls in the NBA.
Biyombo played in the ACB league in Spain last year, which is one of the most highly regarded professional leagues outside the NBA. It’s difficult to compare stats in a professional league to those in the college game though and at 19 years old (the rumors about his inaccurate age have been pretty thoroughly refuted already) he would have been a freshman had he played in the NCAA last year. I found the following link which compiles Biyombo’s stats over 28 games in the ACB Spanish league over the 2010-2011 season (his first and likely only season in the Spanish League). The summary also includes his stat lines for each individual game:
http://www.eurobasket.com/player.asp...layerID=185563
The individual game stats are particularly interesting because they reveal that he was effective scoring the ball in the first half of the season while playing for Illescas where he was eventually promoted as a starter and contributed three double-double games in extended minutes late in the season. In the second half he played off the bench for Fuenlabrada where he scored the ball less but kept up his rebounding pace and improved his shot blocking numbers, averaging 2.3 blocks (and 2 fouls) in only 16.6 minutes.
As is typical for players with limited experience in organized basketball, his skill level at this point is extremely underdeveloped. He can’t dribble the ball in the open floor, his assist to turnover ratio is atrocious, and he shoots around 50% on free throws. His athletic gifts are such that he’s already having an impact on the game with his rebounding and shot blocking but whether he’ll have a long and successful career in the NBA or not is going to depend on his willingness to learn and improve his game. He’s as raw is it gets, but anyone with a body type that compares favorably to Dwight Howard is going to get attention in the lottery. While maybe not an All-Star center in the making, if he’s able to translate his shot blocking and rebounding from the Spanish League to the NBA he’ll be an asset on any team in the league.

Kingfans Scouting Report #2:
Biyombo is probably one of the most talked about prospects in the draft. He came out of nowhere six months ago and now looks set to be a lottery pick, although exactly where he's taken is still pretty wide open.
Biyombo really came onto the scene with the first ever triple double in the Nike Hoop Summit game. Since then he has had every GM in the league intrigued by his game and potential. He played in the ACB league which is one of the best outside of NBA, and he was very productive in the time he got.
As everybody knows, offensively Biyombo is far below average. He doesn't display any real touch around the basket, although he has on occasion finished well using the glass while close to the basket. Still, he's a guy that is going to be your last option on the court offensively. He actually shoots a very good % from the field thanks to his discipline on this end of the floor. He gets pretty much all of his points on dunks and putbacks. I saw an interview with him on youtube a couple of weeks ago, and he said something which really does show his smarts and maturity. He said, and I'm paraphrasing, "I know I'm weak offensively, so I only do what I can on the court". Now call me crazy, but one of the things that can often be infuritating about defensive big men is that they're adamant that they are good offensive players as well. Our very own Dally used to infuriate sixers fans by taking shots which he had no business taking. He still does it for the Kings at times, although to be fair he has improved offensively. With Biyombo, you will not have this problem. Offensively he will take what's given to him and that's it. So while he's a poor offensive player, he won't really hurt you with shot selection or moments of madness.
Defensively, as everyone knows, is where Biyombo's value lie. Physically he's a specimen, measuring around 6'9'' in shoes, which is perfect size for the PF spot but a little undersized for the center position. Still, he can make up for this lack of size with sheer length and athleticism. He has a huge wingspan of 7'7'', and can really get off the floor. He's a very quick jumper too. He's already a very good defender and he will only get better as he learns the game at the next level. Biyombo certainly has DPOY potential if all goes according to plan. He's a hard worker and never gives up on a play. He contests every shot he's within distance of and is an impressive weakside shot-blocker. He averaged over 2 blocks a game in limited minutes, as well as 6 boards and 6 points. So it's easy to see how he could translate into a 10+ rebs and 2.5+ blocks a game type guy. He's going to need an offensive big man next to him to ease the burden on that side of the ball though, because if a team relies on him to carry any sort of load offensively, he probably won't get the time he's worthy of.
Scouts are worried about his feel for the game. He has poor hands, sometimes fumbling passes and mis-handling the ball. He doesn't have ball handling skills of any sort, and he's not a good passer. He also turns the ball over, probably due to the aforementioned weaknesses. But who's going to be drafting this guy for his offense? All a team needs him to do is fit in and not disrupt things offensively, and then make up for it with elite defense. That's what will happen if Biyombo pans out, with perhaps 8 bonus points off of dunks and putbacks.
Do I like Biyombo? Sure I do. He's a fantastic person with a great outlook on life. He's been through all sorts of obstacles in life and he's overcome them. He's mature beyond his years (regardless of what age you think he is) and a very hard worker. He relishes a challenge and I've no doubt that he'll do all he can to be a successful NBA player. There are multiple articles out there about this guys personality - many people are falling in love with him due to it. He's certainly going to be loved by whatever fanbase he goes to. I think he offers a lot as a player, obviously on one side of the ball only. But guys like him aren't that easy to find, especially with his sort of character. Some scouts question his age and think he's closer to 22 than 18, but from reading different sources it seems that bone scans have revealed that he is more than likely 18, as he insists himself. If I were to draft him it wouldn't bother me either way. His offensive upside is limited anyway, but his defensive potential is a different story.
Overall I like Biyombo as a prospect and although he won't be coming to the Kings, he has a good chance of paying off for another team down the road. He probably won't get minutes straight away due to his offense, but when he learns the offense I think he could be a valuable player for a team. Due to his strengths and weaknesses and the potential to flame out, I would think he should be drafted somewhere from 10-15. Perhaps he might go higher if a GM really likes him. Just to throw this in, he's a very smart kid. I believe he speaks 6 different languages. That's crazy.
In summary, here's Biyombo's game:

In summary, here's Biyombo's game:
Strengths:
- NBA ready body - strong, uber athletic, crazy length.
- Motor - pursues everything.
- Defensive ability and potential - has DPOY type potential.
- Smart - knows his role and doesn't try to do more.
- High character - very mature and intelligent.
- Leadership qualities.
- No real offensive game or moves.
- Poor hands.
- Undersized for center?
- Is he reliable enough offensively to get in the game?
- Question marks about real age.
As always, here is a short video of some of his defensive plays and dunks.
