Despite reports of interest from the Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Pelicans and Sacramento Kings, there's been no movement on the future of Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga six hours into free agency. The Warriors may be left to ultimately re-sign the young forward, particularly given one of the best potential targets in a sign-and-trade could be on the move before the Warriors even get an opportunity. According to NBA insider Jake Fischer on Monday night, the Detroit Pistons are emerging as a contender to land Kings guard Malik Monk in a sign-and-trade that would send former Warrior Dennis Schroder to Sacramento.

Also Kuminga’s camp wanting 30 mil a year when Keegs and Jabari are both going to end up around roughly 25 mil a season is hilarious.

Kuminga will end up like Kuzma. Flashed a little while young. Will end up being a non winner
They’re completely different players though. Kuzma refuses to take inside shots while Kuminga has largely been in Kerr’s dog house for not taking the outside perimeter shots that their system requires lol

I wonder if we get this done by front loading Kuminga’s deal and turning it into a descending contract.
If I’m understanding the cap/trade restrictions properly, 50% of Kuminga’s 1st year of his new contract is counted for salary matching purposes. So, for example, if the 1st year of his contract has him making $24 mil, $12 mil would actually be the figure that is used when matching salary in a sign & trade (@Capt. Factorial keep me honest here).

With that being the rule, I believe we could trade Monk in a S&T for Kuminga if the 1st year of his new contract is at least ~$21 mil.

EDIT: If we send out DeRozan in a S&T for Kuminga, I believe the 1st year of Kuminga’s salary will have to at least be ~$33 mil.

I think Monk for Kuminga makes more sense as we don’t have to worry about giving Kuminga a huge payday to make salaries work and it helps clear the log jam at guard.

I also think Monk would do well in their system. He’s a free flowing player that can handle the ball next to Steph during stretches but also can be effective off ball playing off of Curry, Butler, and Green.

Wouldn't hate a reverse poison pill. Makes it easier to extend Keon/Keegan also. 4 year/80 million. 25-25-15-15. Could also make him a really good asset in year 3!

I don’t think that type of contract is allowed in a S&T, and I think it’s only relevant to players coming off of their 1st or 2nd year meaning a team doesn’t have full bird rights yet. The poison pill is supposed to be back loaded as well so the front loading thing wouldn’t be possible either.

In short, I’m pretty sure this idea is wrong/illegal on many different levels but I’ll let @Capt. Factorial confirm in case I’m missing anything

Isn’t it that the Warriors can only take back 110 percent (matching) of the 50 percent of the first year of Kuminga’s contract (base compensation rule)? So that would be 16.5 million if he is getting a first year salary of 30 mil? I’m no cap expert so I could certainly be wrong.

Ya I'd guess that the contract style I put out was illegal. But I think you can do 8% decreases? 22.57+20.76+19.10+17.57?

still not enough for them to take Monk without dumping more. Logical dump in GS is Buddy, who based on that Duncan Robinson deal probably has a market? Is that worth it for GS? Lose Kuminga, Buddy, Add Monk.

Steph/Monk
Podz/Payton*
Butler/Moody
Draymond/Trayce
Horford*/Post

Interesting for sure, but adds another level of complication with Buddy.

I don’t believe the Warriors are above the 1st apron, and since the outgoing salaries are less than $29 mil, they can take back whatever they send out +$7.5 mil. However, these ranges are tied to the original salary cap of the new CBA and increase each year as the cap increases. I believe that +$7.5 mil is not $8.3 mil but I could be wrong.

So if Kuminga signs a deal and the 1st year is $20 mil, you take 50% of that ($10 mil) and add the $8.3 mil which gets you at $18.3 mil (about 0.5 mil away from Monk’s contract).

I’m sure I’m off here and there on some of this stuff, but I hope I’m somewhat close.

From my understanding, the salary proposed here would be enough for a straight Monk for Kuminga swap.
