Kings trade for Filip Petrusev

So Filip isn’t exactly going to help the defense too much but he’s another skilled Serbian center who also happened to play at Gonzaga. Dude left Gonzaga during the COVID year but mostly because he got replaced by Drew Timme and then proceeded to become one of the best players in Euroleague. He was also really good in FiBA for Serbia in the year where all the other good Serbian players decided to take the summer off for once and left him and Bjeli as the only two good players on their roster. If you want to keep running some variation of the elbow offense we use with Domas when he’s resting, Filip might not be a bad choice as a backup.

Overall this is another case of Monte taking slow risk flier on a guy and getting money from a luxury cap team to do it like the Kessler deal was last season. If Filip turns out to be capable of NBA minutes, it’s a steal. If not, it’s absolutely not going to hurt the Kings to cut him.

Also just to give people realistic expectations, when I say skilled center from Serbia I mean that less in a Jokic Magic Johnson but a chubby Serbian sense and more in a Nenad Krstic solid big man who knows where to be on the floor sense.

From the video, he looks skilled with both hands on offense with good touch. 3 point shot true albeit a little bit of a slow release. What are his measurements?

For those interested in contract details, Petrusev's deal for this year is $1.1M, but not fully guaranteed until Jan. 10. If that gets picked up he's also partially guaranteed on a $1.8M deal for next year, that again doesn't go fully guaranteed until the subsequent Jan. 10.

So this would appear to be a pure flier sticking into our empty #15 slot (barring unexpected news that we actually sent something back). The only risk is $$$, and one would guess the money we're getting sent covers that - and saves luxury tax payments for Clippers/Sixers, neither of whom really want him.

Bizarrely, this trade apparently puts the Clippers below the roster limit, so they're going to have to find another player to sign to an NBA deal.

...they could have just kept Petrusev, as his deal is basically league minimum anyway.

...also, their front line is literally Zubac, Plumlee, Grandpa Tucker, and...rookie Kobe Brown? That's it. Can't find room for Petrusev at the minimum in there, huh?

they can probably just convert Diabate up into a regular roster spot and kill two birds with one stone.

Where‘s my fellow Petrusev super fan, @serbiangoat at??
You knew I would be back, in the Sasha thread I wrote about Petrusev saying I wanted him here or in GSW because 76ers were not a good fit,

Some things that will surprise Kings fans if he plays
.Slides his feet very well despite not being a elite athlete at 6'11 (defensively I would say he's a less athletic WCS but smarter he has a lot of the same problems as WCS did)
.Will throw down the odd nuke on someone

To me the most interesting thing about the deal is in the Euroleague he played with Serbian Sabonis (Luka Mitrovic) a undersized 5 with elite passing who he had insane chemistry with as a PF (can Filip play the 4 in the NBA?) and used his excellent of the ball movement and floor spacing to make it work reallt well. He will get bullied by larger 5's due to only being like 225-230 but he's skilled and I really hope he gets a chance to play.

This is the best breakdown of his game I have seen online and you will notice its Mitrovic feeding him in a lot of the clips, all that's left now is Davion traded for Jovic and I'm set.

Middle Manager Monte Making Moves.

If Javale Adbul Jabee can teach him some defense we may have something.

Serbia, as some of you may know, has been known to produce good basketball players.
None of these guys or gals know, Vinny. None of 'em. Sacramento has never been exposed to any good basketball players coming out of Serbia...Whatcha talkin' 'bout, Willis?

:p:p:p

so we haven't had serbian guy for like, 2-3 years?

traditions must be kept alive!

personally, i don't expect anything big from petrušev, but who knows, maybe he can thrive ..
as you saw, very good and very mobile low post scorer, decent 3pt shooter and a bad defender

comparisons with krstić are good, despite petrušev being lighter and faster. low post moves are very similar.
and below average/bad defence

outside shooting is the only big difference.
