Before Davis opted out, sources said the Clippers were prepared to make a lucrative long-term offer to Sacramento Kings point guard Beno Udrih. Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy is believed to be enamored with Udrih, who blossomed after leaving the long shadow of Tony Parker in San Antonio. Without a Clippers offer, Udrih will probably re-sign with the Kings for the mid-level exception – perhaps at three years, approximately $15.4 million.

Now that I could deal with. Worse case, you've got a decent escape clause.

I think its possible he might be worth that much. Possible -- there were times last year when he was ouor competitive leader out there for us, and he is still young.

But with us in the cap position we are in, contracts like that are doubly damaging. Oddly enough when you use your MLE 15 seasons in a row you have this tendency to choke your cap off.

Ok, but you have to have a point guard, and you can't pay every player max money. If Beno turns into a starting point guard long term, keeps improving, and is able to hold down that the spot when the team is good, $6-$7 million is a bargain. If he's a backup, well, it's not so good. But as I pointed out in another thread, even with Martin, Beno at $6 million, Salmons, the kids and Garcia signed to an extension the Kings will still have approximately $14 million in free agency. Trade Salmons for an expiring and it's more like $20 million. Don't re-sign Garcia and it's even more.

$6 million for Beno isn't the end of the world. It's a slight risk if he ends up being a career backup type guy, but if he keeps getting better $6 million will look pretty good.

If the Kings really want to make a big free agent signing in 2010 it is still conceivable that they would have $20+ million to work with while having five young players under contract none of which, at this point, look to be over payed.

As nbrans pointed out extending Garcia would cut into that cap space but if that happens i would suspect Salmons would be traded or let go in 2011.

I think its just wishful thinking on our part to think that Beno is not worth a full MLE and a 5 years. Thats what his market value is.

He is a good PG thats good enough to start on a decent team. I don't see the problem with that. I am a bit concerned that some other team thats under the cap will offer him more.

Not worth it. We should find a veteran stop-gap PG and then draft our PG of future in next years draft. It's shaping up to be a very very good draft for PG's.

I get where people are coming from but its not a way to build for the future. That's how we ended up with Moore. It was the who else starts at PF if not him? Just because the guy behind him sucks (or doesn't exist), it doesn't mean you overreact.

If your team is not going to be good right now, what difference does it make. Don't hinder your long term plans with moves like these.

I think Geoff's M.O. is to make decisions like this early and take the rest of the summer off. It's not a bad plan actually but it doesn't give me a lot of confidence as a fan.

You act as if Beno can't improve. This was his first year starting, and he actually played really well.

I don't mind it being 5 years. Beno has shown the ability to play in Theus's offense, and Beno can actually play some D as well. I would call it a bad deal if Beno was 32 years old, and we were signing him for 5 years but he's not.

I don't think team options will be included. Why would Beno want that. He could get full 5 years @MLE per from any other team interested in him.

If anything, it will have a player option after 3rd season IF Beno wants one.

he's not worth 5 yrs... how many teams would he be starting for if not the kings? i can only think of 2 the clippers and heat.... this is like last year when orlando bid against themselves for lewis... why would you offer so much? we'd be better off trading for a pg... id rather take ridnour or watson for 2 yrs than beno for 5.... they are on the same tier as pgs...
id rather wait and see what happens... if tinsley is bought out by indy he would be a better and cheaper option than beno..

It is still all rumors, but I certainly hope we didn't offer 5 years. I like Udrih, but to lock up a large amount of cash for 5 years with only one season to go on seems like a stretch.

Yes, he could develop and grow and become better. In that case perhaps the full MLE looks like a decent price. On the otherhand he could stagnate and continue to have issues staying healthy, and then you are handcuffed to yet another deal that eats up cap room. There is always risk involved with contracts, but it just seems magnified to me when your going off someone with a limited NBA track record. Especially when IMO we need someone who is a better distrubutor at PG than Beno has shown up to this point.

I am hoping for something shorter, or something that at least includes a team option to give us an earlier out if he doesn't live up to expectations. Maybe he could get a better offer than that from another team, but we will see what happens. If we were to lose him, I would wish him well and see what other options become available via FA and trades. It isn't Beno or nothing, we don't know what the future holds.

Sure it is that easy. Go back and look at the last 3 drafts. Look at the top 15 players taken in each drft, I bet it is somewhere close to 50% that those guys would be considered really good players. The draft is no guarantee, it is a crap shoot at best..... even lottery picks are no guarantee.

I agree that you have to have a point guard, but I think the deal is too long for a guy with Beno's skill set. Beno is distinctly average at this point in his career. If the Kings were a playoff team in need of an extra piece or two to push them over the top, I'd be all for signing Beno to a long term deal. As it stands, they are (theoretically) a team that's rebuilding. I see Beno as the starting point guard on a bad team. That's what he is now and I think that's what he'll be in three to five years. I'd be happy to be wrong, especially if the Kings give him a five year deal. They've signed middling players to long term deals over and over and it's gotten them nowhere. This is more of the same.

You're right about the numbers in 2010. However, my position is that you don't spend money unless you need to spend it. I'd rather go with a shorter-term fix and try to acquire someone with more upside in the next year or two.

Considering the options, using the MLE isn't a bad thing. In fact, it may keep Petrie from signing someone much older. Beno is a solid player, and that's very good money for a starting PG. It isn't anything that's going to handcuff us in future years. 3 yrs at 30 million, yes, we'd be toast.
Besides, you don't know that we can get a lottery PG in next year's draft. How did it work out for us this year?

Just using your post because it's an example of what I wanted to address.

The question of signing Beno has NOTHING whatsoever to do with signing 3 shooting guards in a row. That happened THEN. We're talking about our need for a point guard NOW. Regardless of who we did or didn't sign, we are currently in a situation where we have to retain a decent point guard.

Hindsight is always 20-20. Talk was that Douby just might be able to develop some point guard skills. Unfortunately, that appears to have been wishful thinking as his only real skills seem to be the shoot first kind.

I'd hate to see us lose a player as capable as Beno to free agency because we weren't even willing to make a competitive offer. The Clippers may very well outbid us, and there's nothing we can really do about that, but at least we know that we didn't stand idly by and let it happen.
