Kings notes: Life much different for Karl - and Kings

DENVER - A couple of months ago, George Karl was on television talking about the Kings.

Saturday night, the Denver coach had to try to guide the Nuggets over the Kings.

Like Karl's occupation, the Kings also have changed.

Karl says the Kings are different, but hardly talent-poor. He said he didn't see much of the Kings before they traded Chris Webber.

"As I look at them on film, it's become Michael Bibby's team," Karl said. "Bibby is more in control of the game than ever before, and unfortunately, he's playing about as well as I've ever seen him play. Their big kids seem like every week they are getting more and more important and a little more synchronized to the high-post offense they like to run. And they still are an offensive machine. They are capable of scoring 110 points and shooting (high percentages)."

Songaila bounces, literally - Kings forward Darius Songaila isn't used to dealing with gravity that often, so when he took a bad fall Tuesday night against the Portland Trail Blazers, he said it was a first.

"A fall, no," he said Saturday evening after receiving treatment for the pain he still feels after landing on his back following a blocked shot by Portland's Joel Przybilla. "I've never had one like that one. I don't jump that high."

Songaila said both players had a hand on the ball, and it became "pinned to the glass and I just tried to grab onto the rim and just make sure I had something because I was going to the floor anyway. But I just couldn't get the rim."

Three games, three coaches - It's a rarity, but the Kings have played the Nuggets three times this season, and Denver has been coached by three different men. The Nuggets visited Arco Arena on Nov. 14 under Jeff Bzdelik. Jan. 11, also at Arco, interim coach Michael Cooper was in charge.

Saturday night, it was Karl. Since he's had a tremendous amount of success and a six-year deal, he'll likely be the man for a while.

Et cetera - The Nuggets finished their seven-game homestand with a 6-1 mark and six straight victories following a loss to Phoenix. * The Nuggets are 21-5 under Karl.
