uolj - Congratulations!

nebs - I'm not afraid of the spread league. I just don't like the idea. Handicapping is for horses, IMHO. Beating the point spread was a creation of gamblers to try and get people to bet against the favorites in a competition.

I may try it next year but I certainly don't think it's more fun. To me, it's like comparing video game NBA to the real thing. That's just my two cents, but I found your "what they are so afraid of" comment a tad insulting.

I, too found his comment a bit insulting as well. I am into sports alot but don't care for the points spread because I don't find it that much fun. But that doesn't mean I am "afraid" of trying it.

I don't gamble, and I don't look at the point spread game as having anything to do with gambling. It's just a way to make the decisions harder.

If the goal is to try to get the most picks right (which I know is not the goal for everybody), then the straight pick 'em game shouldn't be that fun because, as evidenced by the last two years of our league, all you have to do to get the most picks right is check all the buttons under the "Favorite" column. In other words, using your own judgment based on NFL knowledge, gut feeling, coin flips or mascots will get you a worse score.

With the spread, though, each choice is roughly 50-50 to be correct. So using your gut or your knowledge actually has meaning.

It's also more exciting because there are much greater swings. In the pick 'em league, the people doing the best are often the ones only picking favorites, so the only way to get ahead is to correctly pick some upsets. That's not easy. In the spread league, though, I was still trying hard and I don't think nebs did anything different, but he made up over 10 points in a few weeks. More excitement. More fun.

That's just my opinion. I still don't see any reason for not doing the spread if you ignore the source of those numbers. Hopefully next year we'll get a bunch of people to give it a try. Honestly I think doing one of each is the best solution, since they don't take that long to do and you can make similar picks on both sides if you want.

We'll just see how it goes.

My apologies that my comment insulted you. I don't mean like "oh you're a wuss, you're scared ooooohh". It was meant more like, "hey, can you give it a try for a season and see what it's like? It may be more fun and competitive than you'd imagine".

My point was, I was once of the same mind as you two about playing with the spread. A few people kept encouraging me to try it and I finally did. And here I am today pumping it up. :p
