Mark Jones is retiring from ESPN after 36 years. He will continue to broadcast Sacramento Kings games, however.

When was the last time you decided not to pick up your $49 million player option?
I am NOT saying I expect him to do it. I'm shocked that he's even considering it.

To be fair, $49M is a different thing to him and to me. $49M changes my life. LaVine already has all the money he'll ever need to live out his life in luxury and since he's not megayacht-level money that $49M is probably about how many expensive cars he can afford to crash. When your next paycheck is really just some zeros on an account somewhere, you can afford to take a hit on it to be happy.

Not saying I think he will. But he's talking about it, and he's not saying he's definitely picking it up, so...

Should also mention that even if HE goes broke, his brother in law is still Blake Snell so it’s not like he’d be living on the streets.

The question is what is the next contract? Will he make more money with a new contract this year or risk injury/bad play and get a worse contract next year?

Obviously he isn't getting that much from someone else for next year. However, he could possibly sign a 3 or 4 year deal with another team that guarantees him more money overall. It would also allow him to pick the team instead of being somewhere he doesn't want to be.

I mean, one way to do it is for the Kings to work with him and restructure the contract, right? Is that an option?

Assuming if he is even remotely open to listening to suggestion about... why he should reject a $49M option...

haha...

I don't think Zach would be thinking in those terms. If he cares about the money over all else he stays, period. If he opts out, he loses money, period. But he may prefer to play somewhere else for less rather than play (or ride the pine!) in Sacramento for more.

Take a buyout is the best option for him imo. Shave about 12 mil off his deal and he will likely make more money this year than he would if he just opts in. He can sign with a team ready to win and shake the loser label. Kings can then likely avoid the tax and they don’t have to use the stretch provision to do it. Everyone wins.

Outside of a buyout where he doesn't take the full amount I'm not sure what else we can do. Even if the option were available we're not going to restructure his contract to give him more years!

A buyout would be ridiculous for us his expiring contract has to be worth something

Dude could do us the biggest favor...

I didn’t even think he was entertaining it so hopefully he could do us a favor for once

Again, look at the history of those HUGE expirings. The rules still make it hard to match salaries and not eat **** just to make it work. Like the Knicks did with Amare back in the day, a team in the situation the Kings are in tend to view that as more valuable to themselves then otherwise. Cap space is such a more valuable asset in trade because you can basically work with almost any team to make their deals work and create instant flexibility rather than having to make the money work on all sides. I'm sure Perry will look and see but his offers won't be much different than what he heard at the deadline more than likely. There weren't really any major shifts and maybe only Giannis to come so all the offers he talked about at the deadline are probably the same in the summer for the most part.

His contract as an expiring can help facility another move for 2 teams as well if the Kings have some roster spots open.

I doubt it, unless we are prepared to take on smaller long term bad deals. The only other way it could be useful is if we decide to swing for the fence and need his 50 mil to match some superstar salary but I don’t know who that would be.

Ja Morant says hi. :p

If you can get a young talent (that is not being properly used) along with other smaller bad contract(s), it might work.

I think is a moot point anyway as LaVine will most likely pick up his option. $49M is still a lot of dough to leave on the table.

I thought he'd already picked it up?
There was an announcement that he would pick it up but I'm not sure we're actually in the option window.

I think he is trying to strong arm us personally as I'm sure he doesn't want to be here. I was open to giving him a chance when he arrived, and I do realize he wasn't the picture of health this year (which was very much a concern in dealing for him), but it sure seems like he didn't try to work on his game in any way the team may (or may not) have asked him over the offseason. Selfish play, zero effort on defense, he can't be gone soon enough but I would be irritated if we reward him for this, especially if there is any truth that Rich Paul forced Zach as part of the Fox deal and it wasn't Vivek that coveted him.
