Kings' Biancani, 64, retires

Al Biancani will still be talking smack in Sacramento, still be taking athletes to the next level, and still be as busy as ever.

He just won't be a fixture at Arco Arena.

After 18 years as the Kings' strength and conditioning coach, Biancani, 64, retired from the NBA on Friday. His decision was mostly a business one, as his time has shrunk while his local repute and clientele list has grown. Some 400 local athletes depend on Biancani's workouts, and thousands before them depended on his expertise and barking ways.

Biancani has a personal training business operating out of Gold's Gym on Del Paso Boulevard, with a new facility in Natomas set to open in January. Leaving the Kings will allow more time for those endeavors, and to spend time with his wife, Veralee.

"It's time," Biancani said. "Since we've moved to Gold's Gym, it's gone crazy. I don't know if I would've lasted one more year (at both jobs). It was tough, being gone a lot (from) my wife."

Biancani's wife once took part in a legendary prank that typified her husband's style. In 1989, Kings center Joe Kleine was slacking off in a Biancani workout. So Biancani sent Veralee to the store to buy a pair of pink panties.

"I said, 'If you can't hang, put these on!' Then I threw the panties at him," Biancani said.

Biancani said the travel was the most grueling part of the Kings' job. He started traveling in 1998, leaving the non-Kings training to team members he left behind. When the Kings were home, Biancani's days were a blur, a nonstop cycle among the gym, the arena and home during 12-hour days. He will be missed at Arco. "I love working out with Al," second-year King Kevin Martin said. "I remember in college, I was like, dang, another day of weightlifting. But with Al, I wake up, and I'm ready to go see him."

I can't help but think of Brad Miller's freak leg break during non-contact drills and what possible conditioning programs he must of been doing.

sure Martin lifts weights:p

Hey guys? Kidding is one thing but Al Biancani has meant a lot to the Kings over the years. I think he deserves a little better than simply being the brunt of jokes.

It's partially because of Al's training regimen that Brad was able to come back early. And Bobby. etc.

Good luck, Al! Your years of dedication to the Kings are appreciated, at least by this Kings fan.

I'm with VF on this one. Freak accidents (and yes, snapping your leg during a lay-up drill IS a freak accident) will happen despite the weights the conditioning coach makes you lift. I wish Al the best of luck, and thank him for his years of service here.

I respect him as well and for the job hes done. But things like Pejas groin were due to not being stretched enough and many have blamed Al for that.

Im just giving him a hard time.

You KNOW the reason for Peja's groin injury? How interesting. Last I heard it was possibly attributed to several things, including dehydration, injury actually incurred earlier at the bowling charity tournament, and a few other things. Many haven't blamed Al Biancani for "things like Peja's groin"... If they have, could you please give me a link to even ONE article that says it?

The man has done a fantastic job working with the players over the years.

You're giving him a hard time? Do you know him? Come on...the man deserves some credit for his work not a hard time by someone who probably couldn't pick him out of a crowd.

I heard it all over the radio (www.knbr.com) which I listen to 24/7 and plenty of Kings fans call in and they talk to some writers from the Sac Bee. I heard his groin injury was due to not stretched properly and thats all I heard.

I never said he did a poor job with the players. I agree with KG, most of the injuries over the years were freak accidents.

And hes right there: VVV

I guess it isn't the same thing as making fun of players then? Kenny Thomas' weight in gold, etc.

Nope. Not the same thing at all...

Al Biancani is retiring from the Kings after years of dedication and effort. He's been truly dedicated to our organization. He's worked hard - often at the expense of his own family. Why can't people just congratulate him and wish him well instead of going for the cheap jokes?

As far as Kenny Thomas goes, there's nothing hurtful in what I said. If you can't see the difference, there's no possible way I could explain it to you.
