Kevin Martin Interview on KHTK

Kevin just had a brief interview with Grant and Mike on KHTK from Vegas. I will volunteer to provide the interview transcript within an hour or so, unless someone else has it going already. I called in to KHTK about an hour ago to request that they ask Kevin three questions, and sure enough, surprisingly, all three topics were covered.

Let me guess:

1. What's your favorite color?
2. What's your favorite flavor ice cream?
3. What's more important - world peace or an end to hunger?

------------------------------------------

I'm sorry. I should be taken out and flogged.

;)

Nope.

I'll bet the three questions were:

1) Did Peja like Webber
2) Will the Kings work more on defense
3) Will "Quaker" Oats-tertag come to camp in shape.

How about:

1) What is your name?
2) What is your quest?
3) What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

1. what's your expection for kings next season
2. will you worry about your playing time after new rookie's coming
3. what's your dream last night

Man, this transciption thing-y is an itch-bay. Still cranking it out.

Please maintain the taunting. I see you folks are entertaining yourselves.:p

three more:

1) Which tv show was worse Hello Larry or Chevy Chase Variety
2) Was it guard play or foreplay that initiated the kiss between Isaiah and Magic?
3) Anyone know the maiden name of #18,363 on Wilt's list?

I can't believe there are that many Python fans here - your stock all just went up immensely. :)

Consult the Book of Armaments.

Armaments, chapter two, verses nine through twenty-one.

And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O Lord, bless this thy hand grenade, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the Lord did grin. And the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths, and carp and anchovies, and orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit-bats and large chu...

Skip a bit, Brother...

And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.

Amen.

...ARTHUR:
Now stand aside, worthy adversary.
BLACK KNIGHT:
'Tis but a scratch.
ARTHUR:
A scratch? Your arm's off!
BLACK KNIGHT:
No, it isn't.
ARTHUR:
Well, what's that, then?
BLACK KNIGHT:
I've had worse...

"and now for something completely different"

and i think the three questions were:

1.Did you dress her up like this?
2.What also floats in water?
3.Good Sir Knight, will you come with me to Camelot and join us at the Round Table?

6th.......what do you mean lost it? i had it? when? where?

Yes, sir. May I help you?

This parrot is dead.

No, it's not. It's sleeping.

No, it's not. It's dead...

Special K Interview - Part 1 of 2

OK, here it is...finally...I missed a few words here and there (****) but you will get the gist of what was said. He 's working hard, working on the things he needs to, is getting plenty individual attention, and sounds more confident than in previous interviews.
___________________________________________________________

Grant: Hey Kevin, Grant Napear along with Mike Lamb. How ya doin’?

Kevin: Good, how you guys doin’?

Mike: Hey, where’d you go to junior high, cuz we’re doin’ throwbacks right now?

Kevin: Ya’ll are talkin’ about throwbacks for junior highs? I went to Grover Cleveland.

Mike: Grover Cleveland! You see, you could have the “K. Martin” written on there, and that would be a nice throwback right there.

Grant: Well, Kevin, there are worse places you could be for a summer league, right?

Kevin: Yeah.

Grant & Mike: (laughing)

Mike: What do you do with yourself at night (in Las Vegas), you must be bored out of your mind?

Grant & Mike: (laughing)

Kevin: I don’t know. I’m just chillin’ up in the hotel room.

Grant: I tell you, in all seriousness, the people that I’ve spoken to are extremely pleased and excited with the work that you put in as soon as the season ended a year ago. And this is a big summer for you, isn’t it? Because right now the 2-guard position on the team is undecided, and now is the chance for you to really continue to open up some eyes in the next 10 days or so.

Kevin: Yeah, it is. I mean, me and Coach Adelman and Geoff Petrie had a about a half hour talk before ****. We talked about some things, and that there’s a lot of opportunity ahead, if I keep on working.

Mike: Well, when we had Rick on last week, he brought this conversation up that he had with you, and he said that, and I’m paraphrasing what it was, but essentially the text of it was: you feel OK in the NBA, you had a rookie year, and now it’s time to move on. Now it’s time to go to the next level. Is that essentially what he said to you, and what does that mean to you as a player, when he says you’re going to pick it up to the next level?

Kevin: To me, it’s always good any time a coach says something like that, like he’s depending on you to have a role. A big role. He talked about what I did when I got extended minutes this year, that I was ****, so all I got to do is take advantage of the opportunity.

Grant: And it’s a logjam, because the Kings just spent their draft pick on a person that plays your position, Francisco Garcia, so a lot of competition, but then again that’s what pro sports is about. What were your thoughts when they selected Francisco Garcia?

Kevin: I was disappointed … because I’m still the youngest guy on the team! That’s the main thing that bothered me.

He’s a great guy, and me and him have been hanging out in the day and talking about the rookie season, how the players are towards rookies, and all that. Yeah, he’s starting at the 3 right now, because he’s long and he can make plays and he can make that 3, just kinda like Peja. We’re a good combination on the court.

Mike: So how are the players to the rookies? And on the flip side of that, now that you’re not one any longer, are you going to wear out Francisco?

Grant: Well, he’s the captain. We’re speaking to the captain of the Summer League team.

Mike: I’m talking about the real deal. I don’t mean Summer League, when these guys get together. Are you going to be cool with him though?

Kevin: Yeah, I’m cool, ya know. Cuz I’m still a rookie until our first regular season game, so I’ll be a rookie with Francisco for a month until I come back to training camp.

Mike: You’re a rookie again in camp until the season starts? That doesn’t make any sense. You know, that’s ridiculous. I’ve never heard of that before.

Kevin: I never either until I started talking to Greg (Ostertag) about it. So I think it might just be a Greg Ostertag thing.

Grant: Yeah, you know what? Don’t listen to Tag, all right?

Kevin: (laughing)

Grant: Whatever Tag tells you to do, don’t do it. That’s ridiculous. I’ve never, ever, and I’ve been doing the Kings for 17 years, seen a guy that goes through a whole year like you did, and come in a be a rookie in camp again. That’s ridiculous!

Kevin: (laughing) All right, so I’m NOT a rookie!

Grant: No, you’re not a rookie, all right?

Mike: Something tells me that a bucket of chicken was involved when Greg said that you’re still a rookie, and he wanted you to buy him some food. That’s what I think.

Kevin: (laughing) That’s a good one.

Grant: Well, talk to us about, you know, your mindset right now in the work that you’re putting in. I would imagine that you’re devoting pretty much the entire summer to basketball. Is that correct?

Kevin: Yeah.

Special K Interview - Part 2 of 2

Grant: What does it consist of? Tell me, I know what you’re doing now for the next 10 days in Vegas, but what were you doing before this, and what are you planning on doing after the Summer League is over?

Kevin: Before I was working out about 5 days a week, and then shooting 6 days (a week). I was working out with Al every morning around 10:30, and then I went out and worked with the 3 assistant coaches. And it was just me up in there, so it was 3 against 1. You can imagine what they were doing. And then 2 nights a week, me and Bobby were playing on the Summer League team…whatever that SPDL is.

Grant: I got ya.

Kevin: We were playing in that. So that was a pretty “active rest time”, that what Al called it.

Grant: All right, so what do you do after Summer League?

Kevin: After Summer League, I’ll probably take just a little bit of time off. Then I’m kind of undecided, because I’ve got a personal trainer in Florida, but my game elevated so much from working with our 3 coaches (here). They’re going to be around, and I’ve got a house out there (near Arco), so might as well not waste the rent money and just keep on working and developing (here)?

Mike: Kevin, you talked about working with the trainer a couple or three times here, what are your goals physically? Do you want to bulk up? I mean do you want to jump farther? What is it about that working with the trainer that you want to accomplish? Because, you’re thin, and there’s no crime in that as long as you can play, but is it something that you want to address? Do you want to add a little weight?

Kevin: Not so much add weight, because I’m going to add weight as I get mature. But I played in the Summer League last year at 172 or 173, and this year I’m playing at 186 or 187. So that’s a 13-pound difference from Summer League last year to this year. And for my size, I’m pretty strong when people just bang on me. So I’m going to keep on developing some more strength and get mature.

Grant: The one thing I think that you could provide that this team really needs is defense. I mentioned several times when we were in China last year, I was very impressed with the way you guarded Tracy McGrady. I know it was only pre-season, but you like playing defense, don’t you? And I would think that this is an area that you could really excel in.

Kevin: Yeah. I think I’m a good isolation defensive player, cuz that’s all the league is. Once the shot clock gets below 10, it’s just iso. With my quickness and jumping ability, I feel like that’s where I excel at. But then again, I’ve also got the offensive game to back that up.

Mike: So you’re a complete player then, as far as you’re concerned right now. But then, you understand that to play yourself in to the lineup, the quickest way to do that is probably by impressing the coaching staff on defense.

Kevin: Oh, yeah, I’ve been knowing that. That’s definitely what we need.

Grant: There’s no question that’s what you need. Hey, you can score, I mean in college you were the leading scorer in the nation, so it’s not like you don’t have offense, but it’s a process, isn’t it? Last year was, I guess, an eye-opening experience for you, right? It was a first-time experience, you learned a lot, and I would think that as you enter the second year, you will be much better prepared to handle what comes your way, because you pretty much know what to expect now.

Kevin: Yeah, that’s what I tell people. It’s like you don’t know about the rookie year until you experience the rookie year, all the changes they want…

Mike: It’s kind of like gettin’ married, man.

Kevin: Huh???

Mike: It’s kind of like getting’ married.

Kevin: (laughing) Yeah, it IS kind of like getting’ married

Mike: You think you know but…

Kevin: …you really don’t.

Grant & Mike & Kevin: (laughing)

Mike: Exactly right, and we’ll have that talk, OK?

Kevin: Yeah.

Grant: Well listen, have continued success, and we look forward to seeing you a little bit later in the summer, but again thanks for coming on with us.

Kevin: OK. Thanks, guys.

Grant: OK, that’s Kevin Martin on Sports 1140 KHTK…

…Yeah, he’ll be in his room tonight. (sarcastically)

Mike: Yeah, just hangin’ out in the room…

Grant: Yeah, young 20-year olds going to Vegas for 10 days for a Summer League…

Mike: I’m sure he’s ordering PlayStation up there in his room.

He needs to at least hit the buffet, and try and get him up to …what?… 183?

Grant: Hey, what if he gambles? Is it tougher to gamble at the Palms? You’d be taking money out of Joe and Gavin’s pocket. And George, too, because George obviously runs the Palms. You know what I’m saying, Mike?

Mike: Yeah, I’m just guessing that Kevin is not going to rough up the Maloofs at the craps table.

Grant: We’ll be right back. This is Sports 1140 KHTK.

Thanks, 1kingzfan.

Grant and Mike Lamb are about as ineffectual a pair of interviewers as I've ever seen. Glad to see Kevin have such a good attitude. And the fact he still had it after dealing with those two bozos amazes me.

My pleasure. I don't think I could do the transcribing thing for living, though!

On the inept interviewing duo, truer words were never spoken.

Now, my 3 questions requested of KHTK:

1) What has Rick and Geoff said to you about the coming season and your role?

2) What have you been doing in the off-season for physical training?

3) What do you think of the Kings drafting another 2 guard in Garcia?

Thanks 1kf.

I am hoping for big things out of Martin. I thought he could be a good defender from the preseason last year. One of the few good points Grant made.

I'd like to see if he's worked on his shot mechanics. Cruz Dude reported that he wasn't taking that set shot of his in the summer league game. I hope he continues to work on it. The odd mechanics and funky release would make it hard for him to have a midrange game as the whole motion is a little slow/awkward. That and his weight have really been my only concerns with Kevin.

Why does Grant continue to have the prime slot on 1140? I actually like him as a play-by-play guy, but he's a terrible interviewer and his show is generally uninteresting. He gets by because 1140 is the best source of Kings news and info.

I saw a Kevin play a couple times in the SPDL, and I'd say his shooting form still looks pretty much the same but his release looks a little quicker. That's all from my untrained eye.

Rest assured, if Kevin has been going 1-on-3 with the Kings' assistants, they've covered EVERYTHING they needed to cover with Kevin to improve his game.

King Arthur: I am your king.
Woman: Well I didn't vote for you.
King Arthur: You don't vote for kings.
Woman: Well how'd you become king then?
[Angelic music plays... ]
King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. THAT is why I am your king.
Dennis: [interrupting] Listen, strange women lyin' in ponds distributin' swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

Dennis: Oh, but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you.

Dennis: Oh but if I went 'round sayin' I was Emperor, just because some moistened bint lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away.
