Kevin and free throws

From NBA.com Week 3 notes:

Kevin Martin
has made an average of 9.9 successful free throws per game so far in 2007-08. The only players to average 10 or more made free throws per contest over the course of a season are Jerry West (10.6 in 1965-66), Wilt Chamberlain (10.4 in 1961-62), Adrian Dantley (10.3 in 1983-84), Michael Jordan (10.2 in 1986-87) and Oscar Robertson (10.1 in 1963-64).

Not a bad company to be in if Baby Kevin keeps it up (and I think he's fully capable).

Yea but he's been a teeny bit inconsistent, but probably due to fatigue.

His free throw percentage is still above his career average. And he's way above anybody else taking that many free throws in a game.

I like what he said when asked if missing free throws bothered him. He said no. That the percentages were in his favor and would work out the next time. And typically, he can miss a couple and step up and make the next 10 in a row without a blink. I love that he doesn't stress over them.

somewhat of an aside, but it's good to see Kevin get props on the nba.com webpage today for the "scorching start" he's had on the NBA all-star game ballots. sweet!

Actually that article is a fun read. Here's a snippet:

Open letter to Kevin Martin - Matt Wurst 11/20/07

The real reason for my letter is to offer my services to you. In the interest of complete disclosure, I didn't pay much attention to your college career at Western Carolina because I innocently believed that there was just North and South Carolina. And I did not pay much attention during your rookie season in 2004-05, when you averaged only 2.9 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game. I also confused you with Kenyon Martin a bunch of times in your first couple of seasons.

But you have made tremendous strides each season, adding six to eight points per game to your scoring average every year, and shown significant improvement on the defensive end as well (1.5 steals per game). I'm sure finishing second in the Most Improved Player Award voting to Monta Ellis last season was a bit of a disappointment, but that has not slowed you down. And you know what we call guys who can step into a passing lane and take it the distance and finish with flare, create their own shot off the dribble by taking the ball to the rim or pull up and shoot from anywhere on the floor? All-Stars. And I'm not the only one.

Though I would like to go one step further and actually volunteer to be your 2008 NBA All-Star campaign manager. Everyone should know just how good you are.
