Monarchs coach and front-runner John Whisenant said after his team's loss Thursday night he has not spoken to the Maloofs or Petrie regarding the opening. Gavin Maloof told The Bee on Wednesday that, despite the long family history with Whisenant, an interview would be necessary.
"I know they like me, and I know they think I can coach, but they will decide who they think is best for the Kings," Whisenant said. "There's nothing I can do or say to affect that."
Yet while Petrie and the Maloofs will remain in Las Vegas through the weekend and Whisenant is giving the Monarchs a day off, the coach said he is not meeting with the Kings yet. Whisenant has concerns far more vital than the Kings' opening, as his 85-year-old mother is in intensive care in Muskogee, Okla.
Whisenant -- who said he spent the day discussing with his sisters whether to put his mother on life support -- has a plane reservation today to join her and will decide this morning whether to go.
"There are just a lot of factors in this whole scenario, this whole thing, and … I just have to think about it," he said. "And right now, as you can see, I have a lot to think about."
Asked whether he aspired to coach in the NBA, the man who became a millionaire off the court and in the business world spoke in generalities of his passion for coaching. "Quite honestly, it's what I've done best in my life. I've built 450 homes, I've built office buildings. … I've done all kinds of real estate-related partnerships and syndications, but I don't do any of those as well as I coach."

This is from yesterday. Which is what I was talking about in another thread. If they have chosen Coach Whis, then they are just so sold on him they didn't even interview him, which kind of bothers me. Which would lead me to believe that if VF21's info is correct that someone has been chosen, it would be Musselman or Elie. But, VF21's info says Whisenant. So, hell it's all up in the air right now.

Well it was put up at 12 am last night, so if they did interview him, it was over the phone? I'm not one to question VF21 at all, which is why I'm so confused. I just have to go with VF on this, but I'm just hoping for any sign that something might change.

Yeah you have to go with VF's track record here. There's just a lot of little things that still leave some doubt about what exactly is going on.

The Bee is usually slow to pick up on things that go down in Kingsland, so this doesn't give me much hope but I'll take whatever I can get at this point.

If the Maloofs are smart enough to put out a bogus leak to feel the waters... my hat is off to them. That would be quite clever. They can sure plausibly deny that any decision has been made - heck they can make anyone who said different look like quite the fool (not you VF - but your source). I hope that's the game

If they were putting out a bogus leak, I strongly suspect it wouldn't be to me.

EDIT: Having said that, I would love for that to end up being the case. It's sure preferable to the alternative. I've said it in other threads. I wouldn't mind having egg on my face or eating a nice sautéed crow if it meant a different name announced next week.
