Jerry Rice, the greatest WR to ever play retires!

#1
Jerry Rice officially retired today after 20 seasons in the NFL and with 45 NFL records. I thought he would sign a one day contract with SF and retire but instead he retired as a member of the Denver Broncos. He wouldve been the 4th WR on Denvers depth chart.

My all time favorite player and the greatest WR to ever play. Thanks for the memories Jerry!! I'll miss you.

Wow. I sure wish he would have found a way to retire as a 49er.

Thanks for all the great games, terrific performances and wonderful memories, Jerry!

Two of my all-time favorite football expressions:

1. "Montana to Rice for six!"

and...

2. "Young to Rice for six!"

Yeah...I don't understand why he'd end up retiring with a team he didn't even play for. Seems like Jerry and the 9'ers would have done whatever it took to make sure he retired as a 49'er.

I think the Broncos would have had to cut him...and then he would have had to sign the one-day deal.

It doesn't really matter that much IMHO.

This 49er fan will always see him as a Niner, no matter what...

Remember, he was on three teams after the Niners. In the future, however, and when he's in Canton, I'm sure it will be his 49er jersey that's most prominently displayed.

Good luck in all your future endeavors, Jerry!!!

He outlasted TWO Hall-of-Fame quarterbacks whose names will be forever linked with his. He played in the NFL for TWENTY-ONE years! I think he's entitled to take a rest.

:D

Someday when I'm older and still watching football I will think back at how amazing it was to watch Jerry Rice show what success is all about. He was extremely talented physically, but that was only half of what made him so special, he had something inside that I don't think I could ever define or justifiably describe. What a pleasure it was to have been around for such an amazing ride. Thanks you Jerry and good luck to you in whatever you decide to do with the rest of your life.

What a Career, i have much respect for the man, he put up the numbers without the flash and hype, easily the best WR to ever play the game of football, He will be remembered a Niner, but i would also like to thank him for his few good season in Oakland.

Actually he made the final cut, (which was yesterday), he wanted atleast the 3rd WR spot but was offered the 5th, and i guess Jerry decided he would rather call it quits.

And your right, Niner fans shouldnt worry or remember about where he retired, they should remember him for great , record setting and Superbowl winning years in the Red and Gold.

I saw this earlier and it made me cry.:( It's sad to see him go. He was one of the greatest players I ever had the privilege of watching and I thank him for lots of great memories. Good luck to him whatever he decides to do and thanks for all you did for the Niners and football in general. He will definitely be missed.

I agree on both counts, but my favorite Jerry Rice moment was "Grbac to Rice for six!" against the Dallas Cowboys in 1995.

I suppose when you have to take a day off from training camp to take your daughter to college, it might indicate that you've been successful in the NFL for a LOOOOOOONG time.

Here's to the greatest of all time, #80:

As much as I disliked him. Wait a better way to put it is I didn't dislike him, I disliked him because of his team.

He was hands down the best WR if not one of the best players ever to put on an NFL uniform. Not to mention he did it all with 110% class. Nothing but respect and props for him. I sure cannot say that about todays "superstar" WR's.

Also he should have retired as a 49er. It sure wouldn't have been that big a deal to make it happen.

And thinking of the new future... Emmit and Jerry should be in the same HOF class. I imagine they both hold the majority of records. Rice has more of course...

Jerry was amazing! Obviously one of the best of all times, and he will never be forgotten. I have to admit that it looked weird to me to see the Bronco background during his speech, but in the end it doesn't really matter. No matter how many teams he's played on since, he will always be a 49er in my heart, and in the hearts of many. Best of luck to you Jerry, and thanks for the memories!

So what's next? Does he sign like a one day contract with the 9ers so he can retire a 9er?

The Broncos would have had to release him but instead he retired as a member of the Denver Broncos. I guess he could make a comback, and then re-retire as a 9er but I dont think its that big of a deal. When people think Jerry, they think 49er and a little Raider but not Seahawk or Bronco.

I actually just found this article:

Nolan: Rice probably can't retire with Niners yetBy GREG BEACHAM, AP Sports Writer
September 6, 2005

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- Jerry Rice probably won't get the chance to sign a one-day contract and retire with the San Francisco 49ers -- not this season, anyway. The NFL's career touchdowns leader left the Denver Broncos on Monday, announcing his intention to retire after 20 seasons. He spent his first 16 years with the 49ers, winning three Super Bowl rings and becoming the career leader in every significant receiving category. Rice also told reporters that retiring with the 49ers was ``the next step'' in his departure.

But because Rice waited to make his retirement decision until after final NFL roster cutdowns, the 49ers would have to release a player from their 53-man roster to sign Rice to a one-day contract -- a ceremonial gesture extended to several players in recent years, including Oakland's Tim Brown and Buffalo's Thurman Thomas.

When asked if the NFL might make an exception in Rice's case, 49ers coach Mike Nolan scoffed.

``It's not like the NFL to make an exception for anyone, so I don't know that they would,'' Nolan said Tuesday. ``We haven't talked about petitioning anything at this point. We want to respect Jerry Rice and anything that might be his wishes, but at the same time, we're in the process of putting a football team together. We don't want to compromise anything on the team.''

An NFL spokesman didn't immediately return a call seeking comment, but the league previously has said no special privileges will be granted for one-day contracts.

When Rice decided to return for a 21st season this fall, his agents repeatedly spoke with the 49ers about joining the club for one last season. Though San Francisco has one of the NFL's least impressive receiving corps, Nolan wasn't interested.

``My interests go to the 49ers organization,'' Nolan said. ``Certainly Jerry was an intricate part of the success that built this franchise, but my focus is on the current players and staff. I think it's important that we honor and respect Rice. He's due for that, but my focus has to be on this team and (making) sure I take care of the family at hand.''

Rice, who still lives a short drive from the 49ers' training complex, spent 3 1/2 seasons with the Oakland Raiders and part of another with the Seattle Seahawks before trying to make Denver's roster this summer. He said earlier in the year he considered himself ``a 49er at heart. I'll always be that.''

Wow. Some of my best football memories. He's earned his rest.

Definitely should be in HOF.

I was watching Pardon The Interruption on ESPN a couple days ago, and some stand-in for Wilbon was saying how Rice is only the greatest receiver of this era. His argument was that other receivers didn't have the same quality of QBs, the game was played differently, and Rice was made mostly by the system he played in, but sayiing he isnt hte best of all time is still crap. ESPN aired a stat about the margin between him and the second guy o the record list of three categories (yards, tds, receptions) is equal to what only 24 other receivers have done.

In other words, an elite group of receivers have had similar numbers as how much Rice was above the second best. That is ridiculous.

Speaking of ridiculous, on 1st & 10 on ESPN, Skip Bayless and Woody Paige went through who they thought were the top 11 players alltime, and Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders, and Jerry Rice were left off. Randy Moss WAS on the list though. *scoffs* Moss is amazing, and I like him cause he's a Raider (go oaktown), but what's with that?

Jerry Rice = greatest WR ever, no question.

I saw that PTI episode. I was furious when he kept saying Rice was the best WR of his era. What a joke. Jordan isnt the best then. He never played against the old old guys or before the shot clock era right? Give me a break.

yeah, tell me about it.

That guy isn't the smartest. He's had questionable opinions frequently while on the show. He even picked the Raiders over the Pats. I mean, I love the Raiders and I hope they can win, but you don't PICK them over the Pastries.

Jay Marriotti (sp?) does a descent job of filling in for who ever may be absent. I respect the amount of knowledge he has on isssues that dont involve Chicago but this last guy is unreal. Jerry is retired. Put him on the show.

that is just ridicilous to use era's in an argument. the man holds 38 NFL records for god's sake. i mean for anybody who has watched him play the game, i don't care what kind of QB you have jerry rice was a black hole, catching anything within a 5 yard radius.

they had steve young i think on sportscenter, and he said that the greatest throw of his career was when he said, "jerry, im just gonna throw the ball, and you grab it okay?"

so what did jerry do? caught the ball in double coverage and ran in it for a TD. he is the best receiver in the history of the NFL, and as much as I love moss, he still has a long way to prove that to me and the rest of the world i'd immagine.

I will say this, Randy Moss has the greatest physical tools I have ever seen in a wide receiver. He might be the most talented WR in the history of the game. He's a complete athletic freak. But talent alone doesn't get it done. And Rice's ability to be the ultimate pro and show up season after season after season and be the absolute rock of WRs has him entirely on another planet from Moss at this point. He didn't have any off seasons. Every year he was an absolute linchpin of that attack, he was absolutely complete, and he had that Walter Payton/Karl Malone durability too.

Now if you could surgically graft Rice's head onto Moss's body, yes, I think that Moss could end up being the best ever. He's got the most talent ever. But not the brain and dedication. I just find it hard to believe that he is going to hold it together long enough and ever become half the winner that Rice was.

Somewhat like Vince Carter, and Jordan. Ok maybe not like that, but you get the idea.
Maybe Mailman and Barkley?

I was going to say Payton or Emmitt and Sanders, but I myself have argued that as much as I loved Sweetness that Sanders was the greatest RB of all time. Think the difference there though is that he was right there with those guys in yardage and would have beaten them both if he had kept on playing. So guess the same thing applies with Moss. If he can keep on playing at this level for the next decade, not meltdown, get hurt, quit, get caught on drugs, get suspended etc., then I think he deserves to be in the conversation. I just have a hard time seeing that happen.
