The Nets just got tooled. Gave up 2 (what will be) high first round picks, a young and talented PF and a solid PG who is having his best Assist year ever, on a crappy team, for a 2 month rental on a guy who has attitude problems and doesn't want to be there in the first place. What on earth are they thinking?
I know he (AJ) can be a real SOB, but to run off someone as tenured as Sloan (ahem, allegedly) takes quite a bit. Who knows - it might actually work out in NJ.

Excellent move by the Jazz. They are so smart. They do a preemptive move by trading Williams so they don't get sucked down the deep black hole of a Carmelo situation next year. They got excellent talent in this deal, and high picks. I also wondered immediately after hearing of this trade whether Sloan might come back. Is he part of the deal?
IF we had made that trade, there's a good chance Deron would not have resigned with us so we would be taking a huge risk. Unless, of course, Petrie knew that the KIngs would be moving to Anaheim where he could convince him to resign along with another star player, rather than boring old sacramento. * dun dun dun *

It's not a 2 month rental. He is still under contract for next season, and the Nets owner seems to think he can persuade any star to re-sign. We'll see how that works out...

Not only that, but Deron has a player option for the year after that, and with the CBA presumably dragging contracts way down, it will probably be too rich to turn down. Very likely the Nets have two years and two months to convince him to sign a free agent contract there...and if you can't do it in two years, you never will.

But isn't the new CBA rumored to re-structure existing contracts? Thought I read that somewhere. In which case, taking the player option would be just as likely under both the old and the new

There has been some talk that the owners might try to do that, but I kind of doubt it will happen. If they do somehow manage to get current salaries scaled back it would remove some of Williams' incentive to take the player option, I agree.
