Jason Hart: New King

http://www.hoopshype.com/players/jason_hart.htm

Well, sounds pretty damn good... he wouldn't of been my first choice, probably because I forgot about his stuff at Cats, and didn't know much about him to begin with. But I like this move. I didn't expect us to do a trade for a PG, especially for just a 2nd round pick. Good stuff, Petrie is ballin'. ;)

From a Bobcats fan:

"Think a new age Eric Snow. A clutch performer, nice mid-range J but not much of 3 point range, decent at handling the ball but plays within himself so doesn't make many turnovers. Not great PG skills, and not really quick enough to be a great slasher. Inflated numbers because the Cats let their PGs dominate the ball last year. Can play some 2 because he's 6'3. On D he's really good especially against bigger points, but sometimes struggles against small quick guards. All in all I'm sad to see him go especially just for a future 2nd pick, but I guess with Felton and (hopefully) Knight coming back we dont really need him."

I like this trade a lot. Hart for a 2nd rounder? Petrie, you've done well. Plus, according to Hoopshype, he'll be making $1.65 mil with a team option for '06-'07.

In games where Hart played more than 20 minutes, he averaged 10.9 ppg and 5.8 apg. He also had double-digit assists in 10 games.

Kings acquire point guard from Charlotte
Trying to retain Darius Songaila is the next order of business.

The Kings will have at least a couple of announcements whenever the NBA gets around to finalizing its collective bargaining agreement and removing the gag order from front-office personnel.

Sacramento added a backup point guard Tuesday by acquiring Jason Hart from the Charlotte Bobcats for a future second-round draft choice.

The league's moratorium is expected to be lifted early next week after players, agents and front-office personnel have a chance to become familiar with the new labor contract.

"Too bad there is a moratorium," Geoff Petrie, the Kings president of basketball operations, said Tuesday when asked about the trade, "or I'd be able to talk to you about that."

Sacramento could learn about whether or not it can retain restricted free-agent forward Darius Songaila in the next few days, said agent Mark Bartelstein.

"I think things have been heating up with Darius," Bartelstein said. "I've been talking to Geoff and we've agreed to keep talking and find out where we are. Darius has to make a decision in a day or two because it's important to some of the teams we're talking to.

"It's not a situation where you have a restricted free agent who is looking to get out of a bad situation. Darius loves it in Sacramento, and Geoff has made it clear the Kings would like to have him back. It's going to come down to budget issues for the Kings."

Petrie said he hoped conversations lead to Songaila's return.

"Our preference is to keep him," Petrie said of Songaila, who started 21 of the 81 games in which he played, "and we're trying to get that done. I think it's a good possibility."

The Kings can match an offer up to the league's average salary (approximately $5 million) to retain Songaila.

The acquisition of Hart likely means Eddie House will not return to the Kings.

At 6-foot-3, Hart is considered a solid defender who will provide more size than Sacramento has had at the point guard position in recent years.

Hart is a natural point guard who has played with Milwaukee and San Antonio before spending the past season with Charlotte, where he had the league's third-best assist/turnover ratio at 3.6/1. He played in 74 games for the Bobcats and started 27 while averaging 25.5 minutes, 9.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and five assists.

The 27-year-old Los Angeles native, who played collegiately at Syracuse, shot 44.9 percent from the field last season, including 36.8 percent from three-point range. Hart brings speed and athleticism and is expected to push the ball up the court when subbing for Kings starting point guard Mike Bibby.

so, with a reasonable answer now to back-up PG, it's the PF/C spot we really need to focus on. and if the article is correct in saying that we're still high on songaila, that means williamson and thomas/skinner is next to be traded for that piece? we won't have a lot of the MLE left if we go after songaila right?

wait, according to antoher thread, we have early bird rights to songaila, so it wouldn't count towards out MLE. if that's the case, he shouldn't be a question mark for returning.

Actually, this article seems to indicate that the Kings could re-sign Songaila using the Early Bird exception, which is different than the MLE. According to the Early Bird exception, teams can re-resign their free agents at either 175% of his salary or the average player salary, whichever is greater. Since the average player salary is higher, as the article indicates the Kings could match.

Someone who really knows the CBA correct me if I'm wrong.

Here's the explanation of the Early Bird exception on: http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm

EARLY BIRD EXCEPTION -- This is a weaker form of the Larry Bird exception. Players who qualify for this exception are called "Early Qualifying Veteran Free Agents" in the CBA. A player qualifies for this exception after just two seasons without being waived or changing teams as a free agent. Using this exception, a team may re-sign its own free agent for 175% of his salary the previous season or the average player salary, whichever is greater (see question number 22 for the definition of "average salary"). Early Bird contracts must be for at least two seasons (which limits this exception's usefulness -- it's often better to take a lower salary for one more season and then have the full Bird exception available the next season) and no longer than six seasons. A player can receive 12.5% raises using this exception

P.S. Whoops, beat me to it, Jerryaki!

haha, yeah, seeing as how i have this page open all the time i get to see a lot of threads.

but yeah, since we won't have to use our MLE, darius should be part of our future plans, i think.

Hmm, so if we're pushing hard (somewhat) for Songaila, makes you wonder if we're just going to try stick with the PF by committee thing for this year.

I think we are loading up with PF in anticipation of trading 1 or 2 (possibly with one of our SG) for a starting/backup C (starting if Brad goes to PF).

I don't think we're necessarily pushing hard, it just makes sense to keep Songaila when it doesn't count against our MLE and we only have three other big men. Whether we keep Darius or trade him, we're obviously better of signing him than letting him walk.

Hart is a good pickup for basically nothing. He played two years in San Antonio and was a defensive change of pace off the bench. Nice to see that Petrie is addressing the concern of perimeter D. Now we just need a shotblocker.

From the Bobcats web site:

Position: Ht./Wt.: 6'3" / 181
Birthdate: 4/29/78
College: Syracuse
NBA Yrs: 3
Entry: Drafted by Milwaukee with 49th overall pick in 2000 NBA Draft
Guard

BERNIE BICKERSTAFF SAYS...
“One thing I really like about the young man is that he really studies the game. He has a good understanding of the defensive concepts, understands the guy that he is guarding and knows who he should get the ball to so as not to compromise his teammates. We like his basketball I.Q.”

QUICK FACTS
Hart has appeared in 64 NBA games over three seasons with the San Antonio Spurs and Milwaukee Bucks. He averaged 3.3 points, 1.5 assists and 1.5 rebounds in 53 outings with the Spurs last season. Hart has also played for the NBDL's Asheville Altitude and for Makedonikos in the Greek League. He was a All-Big East First Team performer as a senior at Syracuse.

Nice to have a big point guard (if you don't count DC) for the first time since Anthony Johnson was a King. I like Hart. He's a good defender at the point. Struggles against waterbug PGs, but is still a big upgrade defensively when Bibby goes to the bench.

I'm not sure that this does signal the end of House as a King since the newly expanded rosters make it even more likely that the team carries a 3rd PG. I suppose it depends on if Geoff believes either Martin, or more likely Garcia, can swing to the point for limited minutes.

I agree with the sentiments expressed regarding Songaila. If it doesn't cost the team any part of the MLE and the Maloofs are willing to dole out the cash, why wouldn't the team want to keep a decent role player? I've also said all along that I'd rather see Thomas dealt (likely in a package) and Darius re-signed than KT stay and Darius leave for nothing.

I suppose keeping both wouldn't be the end of the world, but I'd like to see Petrie add a PF or PF/C who brings a few of the qualities our bigs currently lack: athleticism, shotblocking, aggressive rebounding and a nasty disposition.

Still, on it's own merits, this is a nice move by Geoff.

I have heard or read the comments that Hart "plays within himself" which seems to be the whole mantra of Adelman/Carrill coaching. If this is true, I can see Hart fitting right in and getting solid minutes.

Interesting pick up. My feelings on Hart are that hewas poorly utalized by Charlot. He is NOT a fast break high scoreing PG and probably will never be true starting material untill/unless he develops better court vision. It's not that his passes are bad, in snowville he threw GREAT passes. The problem is that with more than one scorer on the court with him he frequently will miss the look to the open man, or perhaps was told NOT to make it. He can score but he thrives as an on ball defender. NOt sure about the speed size problem, but I did notice that Boykins burned him and suspect that it may be true the little guys do give him trouble. BUT what I love is the fact that the Kings are bringing in defensive minded players and working to abolish the Ompaloompa line up that plagued this team after the Webber trade.

Great for singing they are, yes, good for basketball they are not.

glenn, yoda is i think. jason hart does not have a high basketball iq, so i don't know what this backerstiff is talking about. he is a reasonable backup; nothing more, nothing less.

Actually the option for the 06-07 season is a player option... which means he will probably be a free agent after next year

Oops, you're right, thanks for checking that.
