Jackie Butler.

SLAB

Hall of Famer
Well, with all the other centers that I belive are worthwhile off the market, I think it's time we move out focus to this kid.

Right now he is a restricted free agent, but given how New York used him last year, and how he is stuck behind the other bigs in New York, I wouldn't be objected to slightly overpaying for him to pry away from them.

He is still young, but I see potential in his stats...I was watching some boxes from New York last year, enjoying the train wreck, and when he did get significant minutes he seemed to be able to play.

Anyways, he's potentially just as good as, and has a much higher cieling than the other guys out there...Olowokandi, Cato, Taskalidis, etc.

I say split our MLE between him and a veteran backup PG.

Whats does everyone else think?

I think he'd make a good back-up, but NY has already given him a qualifying offer, so they can match. I think half the MLE won't be enough to dissaude the knicks from overpaying another post player.

Agreed ^. I like Butler, and would be cool with getting him, intriguing big.

Even push it to the whole MLE.

The guy is only 22 years old and can improve by leaps and bounds...A good center is tough to find, and Butler showed flashes last year.

Consistant playing time can only help his cause.

I mean, is there even anyone else to spend it on, now?

If we want to get a quality back-up PG, there is Marcus Banks (can go either way, part of the MLE or MLE). But back-up PG really is in question right now, who knows on that until late Sept.

I'd rather use part of the MLE on a solid back-up big (Butler/Elson/Cato).

Watched the Knicks alot last season, and Butler showed flashes of being a good big when given minutes. probably wouldnt take too much to get him from the knicks, since they would look foolish for playing butler ahead of jerome james at backup another year, because of the huge contract james got.

Also, Banks would want more than half of the MLE so that might not be a good choice for us

I think Banks is going to get more than the MLE...He's impressed me.

Im all for giving the backup PG to Douby, given he was the primary ballhandler at Rutgers...Teach him to trust his teammates, and we have Bobby Jackson Pt. 2, hopefully.

But I think overpaying will pry away...They already have the James contract, Frye will need to be resigned in a few years, Eddy Curry's, David Lee.

I don't see much reason for the Knicks to keep him.

I don't think we should set out to overpay for the kid but if we can push an offer that'd be just enough to be beyond what the Knicks would match then I'd be happy.

Looks like he's refusing to play in summer league for the knicks, maybe we can get him easier than we thought

with all the young tallent getting signed I don't see any point in bringing in lower rung vets, just pointless. Trade for a solid starter to replace Brad paly with him, maybe a nice second tier as a back up but Butler is a middling guy that will probalby allways be a third stinger so why bother?

Today's NY Post:

Knicks free agent Jackie Butler refused to play summer league, but his agent, Keith Glass, will be here this weekend to talk to Thomas. Glass contends four teams are willing to offer Butler more than the Knicks' $1 million qualifying offer.
