Iverson and Bobcats hammering out a deal?

It's looking more and more like Allen Iverson(notes) is going to end up with the Charlotte Bobcats. Head coach Larry Brown keeps saying he'd like to have Iverson on his squad even though the pair didn't always love each other when they were together with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Rumor has it the two sides have either agreed on a deal or are getting pretty close to one. Either way, one is expected to probably be signed sometime this week, according to the Sporting News.
The arrival of Iverson would likely not be good news for shooting guard Raja Bell(notes), who would surely get pushed down onto the bench.
Earlier last week, Iverson included Charlotte on a list of teams that he might join. The others - New York and Miami - no longer appear interested in the aging veteran.

This should make Slim happy. IIRC he is a Bobcats fan and has used them as an example of how to build/re-build a team.

Well...they got to the NBA finals, so I would say it "worked". Now, obvsiously things didn't end well and certainly Iverson is past his prime, but perhaps Brown is the only coach that has a chance of successfully utilizing him as he winds down his career.

thats another way of looking at it. bell should demand a trade though, just to cause some drama.

I suppose that's possible. My thought was that it didn't end well because Iverson in his prime didn't want to play by Brown's rules. Now, as Iverson's skills diminish and he doesn't have them to fall back on as a defense as much as before, I can see him bristling even more over the kind of control Brown always has to have.

Doesn't surprise me at all (think I may have actually predicted this here a couple months back). Iverson wants to go out on his own terms, but the only coach willing to put up with him anymore is Brown. Still may not work, but both apparetnly are willing to give it a shot. Iverson actually does make some sense for the Bobcats, a decent defensive team that lacks scoring and could use someone like Iverson. Especially with the Chandler for Okafor swap--you can actually squint hard and see some similarities with the Mutombo-Iverson 76ers. Role will be an issue, however, as whose minutes does he take? I doubt it would be Bell (a former Iverson teammate) demanding the trade, but if they end up resigning Felton, how do they find minutes for last year's lotto pick in Augustin?

iverson on the bobcats doesnt look that bad now that i look at their roster.

thats not that bad of a team in the east, it is similar to the '01 sixers. if iverson plays like a team player they could do some damage. but fitting bell into offense will be hard unless he is cool with coming off the bench. but you would need him starting against teams the lakers, celtics and magic.... wallace could guard kobe but then iverson would be guarding artest. they would be a good match up for the cavs though, west isnt a fullsized sg...

The Bobcats made their qualifying offer to Felton (at $5.5M) so he's a virtual lock to be back. While I can understand wanting to get rid of Bell (or rather, being willing to...) I don't understand why they'd want to trade an ender like Bell for four years of Beno and end up with THREE PGs (Augustin, Felton, Udrih).

Doesn't make sense. If somebody comes through with an offer for Felton and the Bobcats refuse to match, then it's a different story. But for now, the Bobcats don't do it.

Felton is returning. Without a sign-n-trade Felton is stuck, for next year. Adding Iverson would help them, but its unclear if Iverson would even try to play for a team that isn't contending for a championship. The Magic are soldered together and he won't be cracking into them. The Cav's could use him, but it would be risky, and it would cost them 3 million for a player who might need to be bought out mid season. The Bobcats work, but the lakers and the celtics could also benifit from AI. How could AI not flock to a contender is the question?

If the Lakers had wanted him they could have had him a couple of years ago. I don't think there are enough basketballs in Los Angeles to have Iverson and Bryant on the same team.

Allen Iverson twittered again Wednesday, saying the Grizzlies have made him an offer -- and Memphis says it's true.
Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace told ESPN.com Wednesday night that negotiations between the sides have heated up to the point where the Grizzlies have made their first formal offer.
"We're heading into the home stretch before the season, and we have had interest in Allen all summer," Wallace said. "We've been in touch on a fairly consistent basis and had dialogue with his agent, Leon Rose, since the beginning of free agency."
