Our Playoffs... Shooting for the 8th Pick and more...

Theres been alot of talk about finishing strong to set a tone for success next year. Im sorry but I dont care how many more games we win to end this season. Its not going to have the same impact on our future as getting a better draft pick and landing another possible star on the cheap through the draft.

The difference between the 12th and 8th pick might not seem like a big deal but it is. Sure the draft is a gamble like a card game at the palms. But our secret weapon is that Geof Petrie can count cards. GP has more than proven that he can draft good players often and getting a higher pick gives him more options and better odds. If we are serious about our future we should attempt to land another stud to pair with the young core of K-mart, Garcia, Hawes, our two sec. round picks, and maybe S.Williams and Douby.

As i said before losing on purpose isn't right but If we lose because we commit to evaluating our best pick up in the bibby trade S.Williams, and our own draft pick Douby. Or because we play Hawes more mins(when healthy). Not to forget resting our aching vets. Then good for us! if you think about it if S.Williams or Douby did start to break out that would be pretty positive for us.

WE DO NOT NEED TO WIN MORE GAMES to have positives to look at going forward. here are a few positives from this year.

I was looking at the posts from this time last year and wondering what the difference was between then and now. Obviously Muss was terrible but here are some of the reasons its been better.

#1 Our 10th pick Hawes emerging as a possible star.

#2 the continued growth of K-Mart, and Garcia.

#3 Brad Miller getting back to an elite level.

#4 Salmons play as a starter.

#5 Artest staying out of serious trouble.

#5 Making a REAL move toward rebuilding (bibby trade)

those a a few of the positives i could think of as far as this season.

Salmons' play as a starter doesn't act as a benefit to us; it certainly boosts his trade value, because some GM is going to be teased into thinking that, "Hey, this is a 20-ppg guy early in the year and was picked up by so many fantasy leagues--we should nab him"...but on our roster, Salmons already being one of the elder statesmen at age 28, he simply won't be a starter with Kevin Martin, Ron Artest and the emerging Francisco Garcia around here. He's shown on numerous occasions that he can't handle a bench role and resorts to underachieving play there when we know he can do much better. Just becomes invisible. I'd actually try to bait a team in getting him before his market value evaporates (like we did with Kenny Thomas), because I can't really see a future with him here. He's a bit of a tease--the talent, the scoring ability, some glimpses of all-around play are there, but he can't put it together--and most of all I question somewhat his miotivation. We'll see how it goes.

I like that Reggie isn't playing Kenny. and that he's giving Mikki lot's of minutes. Mikki's earned them.

I wish that Reggie played Spenser more and Ron less.

I have less strong feelings about PT for the others.

No, Reggie's job is to do whatever he can to help the franchise. Period. When winning matters, what he can do to help the franchise is win. When player development matters, what he can do to help the franchise is develop players. We have alreayd lost the season. Winning no longer matters. Developing players does.

Reggie's problem would appear to be two fold, or maybe just one or the other. Either a) his massive ego will not allow him to do his job, which at this point is develop players and help us in our offseason. Or b) he is too selfish to do his job and wants to pad his coaching resume for the day he gets fired and needs to get a new job. There is of course the c) option: that his bosses are either idiotic or spinless and sanction the whole thing. come to think of that is more likely to be an "and" than an "or" option.

I agree with all of the above options. But there's one more option when it comes to Theus not playing Douby and Sheldon Williams: (d) Reggie doesn't think either one of them can play, regardless of how many minutes they get. And that is the least attractive option of all. If that option were true, then Theus has seen enough of them to give up on them already. Not a happy option, at all.

If I had to pick, I'd choose (e) - all of the above.

As far as #3, #4, and #5, all those are positives for this season. But when it comes to rebuilding, they are only positive insofar as they can be translated in trades to get younger and more athletic and truly rebuild. Otherwise, 3-5 are worthless assets for the future because all of them are fully into their prime with little or no upside from here on out.

I agree with you about not winning any more games. Too bad the organization doesn't.

good news is indiana got J. O'neal back and they won... I'd be stoked on the 10th spot again this year. It'd be nice to get the 8th or 9th pick but thats a bit of a reach.

Great point except Martin is a sg but im sure that was a typo. Furthurmore i stand by my comments on Reggie that worrying about the draft is not his problem, I doubt GP has told Reggie to stop trying to win.

That sounds like the compartmentalization that goes on in a bureaucracy (the "it's not my job approach"), not a basketball team. I think a high draft pick is definitely Reggie's problem. If he wants to ever get out the mediocrity rut he's in, he better start worrying about draft picks and trades and FA and everything else that can allow him to win. He'd be an idiot, if he didn't.

8th or 9th is all but mathematically impossible. Atlanta should finish ahead of us (even if they miss the playoffs). Indiana has a weak schedule and if O'Neal is actually healthy for a playoff push they might get 36-37 wins. New Jersey will probably get about 35 wins. Chicago and Charlotte aren't worth mentioning. We're at 33 wins now, and we have a tough schedule (though 6 of 9 are at home). 2-7 is the worst we could plausibly do, which is 35 wins and might tie us for 10th. But 12th is far more likely - what's interesting is that it's been pretty evident we'd end up 12th for a month or more, as we've been poised smack dab in the middle of the wide sweet spot between Portland and the Clippers and good enough to sit right around the 7th/8th spot in the East. We've dropped just enough to flirt with being below the 8 seed in the East but above the non-playoff teams. Just an assessment of where we're at and not intended to support either side of the tanking/winning discussion.
