Quincy Ready
to Put Handles on Display
Quincy Douby is itching to get his second NBA season underway. The former Big East scoring leader wasn't at all satisfied with his rookie season and he's ready to show the NBA what he is really capable of doing on the hardwood. Quincy isn't ready to proclaim a breakout season, but he wants to show the fans more than just the glimpse they saw of him last year against Golden State on January 30th when he scored 21 points.

How does it feel to be a second year guy in the NBA?
"It feels good. I have a year under my belt. Even though they didn’t make me do rookie chores or anything, there’s nothing like getting that first year out of the way. Get the butterflies out and you know what to expect. How it is to travel – you know what to do and what not to do just from that year under your belt. I’m just enjoying myself and just ready for this preseason to start!"
What is your mindset going into this season?
"Just try to do better than the last year. I didn’t do well at all last year so I can only improve. I feel like a rookie again because we have a whole new coaching staff. I feel like I’m starting all over again. So I’m ready for the challenge, I’m ready for the new coaching system and whatever they want us to do. I’m just going to go out there and be confident and just give it all I can give it."
How has Coach Reggie been with you so far?
"He’s been good. He did a great job at New Mexico State. I watched a few of his games. He likes to push the ball and he loves scorers. That’s how I play. I like to transition, I like to put shots up, try to find easy baskets. I’m a scorer so I feel his coaching staff fits my game. I’m just looking forward to it. He’s played in the league. He’s was an all-star player in this league. He did a lot and like you said earlier he averaged almost 19 points per game which is remarkable in this league because the competition in this league is no joke every night. So I’m just looking forward to it and I’m just going to give it all I can give it."
Have you talked to Cisco about him at all?
"Oh yeah. He said a lot of good things about him at Louisville. A lot of the stuff he does now, Francisco said he did at Louisville. I watched Louisville too. Their staff fit my game as well. They love shooters – penetrate and kick, moving the ball and finding easy shots in transition. That’s a great way to play especially in the Western Conference. Last year, I felt we were kind of a half-court team. We were like an Eastern Conference team playing in the West. We couldn’t keep up with those teams because they were just playing up and down. We were kind of like slowing it down a lot in my opinion. So it’s going to be good."
Has the coaching staff said they want you to spend some time playing point guard this season?
"Yeah they want me to play combo guard – bring the ball up and still be aggressive to score and look for my shot. They want me to be able to bring the ball up, start the offense up and have more threats in that situation."
Are you comfortable playing point and how are your handles?
"I’ve been working on my handle a lot. I’m real confident in my handle – going right or going left. I’ve been really focusing on that. Last year I wasn’t too confident in that because I wasn’t really put in that situation. But I made sure that if I was put in that situation (through) working hard this summer, I would be ready for it."
What kinds of drills help you build confidence in those areas?
"A lot of different drills, I've been doing a lot of ball handling, doing stuff with my weak hand that I already do with my right - especially if the guy is forcing me left, (I want to be able take advantage of the situation). Whatever the defense gives me, just take advantage of that. A lot of defenses try to force you into your weak hand. I’ve just been working a lot on my weak hand, working on finishing strong with the left hand and just doing strong power moves to the left."
If this season turns out to be everything you hope for it to be, what would it include?
"Just having playing time and producing in those minutes I receive. Being aggressive and just improving. My goal is to put myself in a better situation to help this team and to help myself improve as a player in the League."
How much fun do you guys have on the team?
"We’re pretty close. Veterans on this team are like no other because a lot of the other rookies told me how their veterans weren’t cool -- like the pranks that they were having done to them. None of this occurred to me or Justin. They were just real nice to us. We bonded and we hung out together. We went to Mike’s house. We hung out with Brad. The other day we all were in Justin’s crib and Brad came over. Francisco came over a few days ago before he went to China. Matt Barnes - other guys from other teams, we chill with them too. We just are trying to make the best of it, just trying to enjoy ourselves."
Is there a veteran on the team that took you under his wing and helped you with the transition as a rookie?
"I’d say Francisco. Even though he’s really not a veteran, but he and I are really close. He was my roommate in ABCD Camp back when I was in high school. It was my senior year. So I knew him before I was drafted by the Kings. But we really didn’t talk a lot after the camp, but now we talk all the time."
What are your goals for the team in 2007-08?
"Playoffs. As far as the team goes, I want to make the playoffs and try to advance as far as we can. Hopefully we can win a championship. The fans, they’ve been really supportive even though we had a really shaky year last year. But with their help and motivation, I definitely know that we could make the playoffs. We’re going to put our hearts out there."
Do you feel that the fans give you a confidence on the court?
"Yeah, definitely. They show me a lot of love and I really love the fans. Even though I didn’t play a lot, with the little time I received, they showed me a lot of love. I felt like I was at home in Sacramento, so it was cool."
What is the part of your game that you really like, that we may not know about yet?
"My handle -- I have a pretty good handle. People don’t think I can put it on the floor as well as I can. So I’m going to try and show that more this year."
What kind of insight do you think you can give Spencer and Mustafa going into this year?
"Just stay hungry and be aggressive. (As you know), I was drafted 19th and I expected the coaches to just hand me things like, “Here, we’re going to just hand you the ball and you’re going to play.” I was kind of passive because I thought they were going to give it to me. Now, they just have to be aggressive and just show it everyday. Bring it everyday. Don’t expect the coaches to just give you it. You have to take it. You have to be aggressive. Come confident. Don’t expect anybody to have confidence in you. Have confidence in yourself and you’ll be successful."
