In Petrie I trust... he is STILL on a hot streak !

Ok (big sigh) for most everyone on this board after the Salmons trade ... people lost their minds... they wanted Petrie fired, blah blah blah... geez give the guy a break...

quick recap of the Salmons trade. we got better!

beno was steady for us sure, but he was very limited in his game. this team needs more shooters and more range. and with Salmons/Jimmer/Thornton... we have locked down the 3pt weakness... as a team last year we were ranked 26th at 3pt % ... crazy considering our 2 BEST players need to operate in the paint! now we can open up the floor for Big Cuz and Evans to reke havoc, and if people bring the double we knock down a 3! also Salmons contract isn't the death of us... its not bad at all considering what he does. last time Salmons was on 2 horrible teams with horrible coaches... worse then Paul west.. he was our only go-to guy really... we haven't even seen him play for us yet... it could work... perfect fit or not its an upgrade and his 38% 3pt shooting is huge. hes not Kenny Thomas he can be traded again.

MOVING ON...back to todays move...

at first i couldn't believe the Cav's did this... Casspi??? for JJ? a big who was on fire to end the season. for Casspi who at the end was a pouting cheerleader... ???

JJ has big time potential ! ! ! he struggled to adjust to "post Lebron" cav's and people were asking too much of him with so little options on that team... not only that but teams were able to focus more on him with so few options... so sure he was struggling... but although hes more a role player than star and he is already way past Casspi's current skill level... and his ceiling is way higher as well. as a bench player or even a 5th option he is a steal ! great move again by Petrie


if you look at every move Petrie has been making... its becoming a long streak of wins for us... Thompson, Evans, Cousins, Hawes and Noc for Sammy D, Laundry for Thornton, Casspi for JJ,

That might not be entirely fair. A rebuild takes time and this team is still really young. If they don't improve by a lot next year it would be fair to call it a failure but right now i think it's still premature. They might finish over 500 next year and everyone will be thrilled.

That's downward trending for 10 years. How many people would keep their jobs with that kind of performance? Would you buy a mutual fund who's managers performace was trending down the past 10 years?

The downward trend started when his star player suffered a near career ending injury that he and the franchise never fully recovered from. Then the Maloofs fired the best coach the team ever had, against petrie's wises. i'm not trying to make excuses but to be fair the Maloofs and bad luck has just as much to do with it as Petrie.

Actually, it is downward trending for 7 years and up 2. Considering I feel that 61 and 59 wins are basically a wash and so are 25 and 24, it is downward trending for 6 and up 1 with small plateaus on either side.

I'm not saying the maloofs dont hold some responsibility, but ultamately it all falls on Petrie. He is there expert. If there is something the owners want and he thinks different it's his job to convince them otherwise. And the trend started before the Maloofs had money problems so you cant put all the blame there.

Well, it takes a real kind of special to get below 20 wins. So while yes the 25/24 are similar there really isnt much room to get lower. And to contrast with the 61/59 thats really at the top and vry hard to get more. So in the span of 5 years they went from the top to the bottom.

1 - Fair point. Maybe Petrie should have been fired 5 years ago. If chasing mediocrity was his idea and not the Maloofs, I would agree he should have gone.

2 - Regardless of why we chose to cling to mediocrity for so long, we started rebuilding 3 years ago. This season will be our third after blowing things up. Petrie has done a great job of acquiring young talent and managing the cap. He deserves this season to see his plan to fruition. However, barring massive injury, he will be accountable for the results.

We cannot prove whose decision it was to put off the rebuild. But we are doing well with it now. I still trust Petrie. He is not infallible. There is a new generation of stat focused GMs threatening to become the new elite of the NBA. In 10 years, stat focused GMs who are great negotiators will probably dominate the league and Petrie will be past his "expiration" date in the industry. But for now, I believe he is doing well and deserves the opportunity to see his vision through. At least for one more year.

In Petrie I trust.

He has started the off-season well but its too early to call at this stage.

If he can re-sign Thornton to a reasonable contract and re-sign Dalembert or his equivalent replacement, then he would have had a pretty good off-season and this team would be pushing for play offs.

That's a pretty reasonable team. Add a couple of heady vets for leadership, spot minutes and some depth and you are on the way. We still have a lot of salary cap room to work with.

What I liked about the 2 trades is that we addressed most of our needs (SF, frontcourt depth, shooting, perimeter D) without sacrificing our salary cap room.

Petrie had the Kings at their best...and their worst. I don't like this roster simply because there are too many guys who need the ball to be effective. I can't imagine Reke for a corner 3 or Salmons doing anything other than a triple threat dribble drive. Defense optional outside of Sammy. It looks like this team is going to live and die on iso plays. Its going to be painful to watch but thank god for the lockout. flame on.

I'm not mad @ Petrie. I like the moves so far. Although I wasn't thrilled to get Salmons back, I think the team probably got better. Lets wait & see after the lockout & signings are made to see what else he can do.

This is Petrie's offseason to really prove that he's got what it takes to rebuild this team. No team rebuilds from one contender to another in a season or two so he gets a pass from me on first couple seasons after Webber's knee injury. However, I was incredibly frustrated at the approach of trying to retool on the fly and stay mediocre for a few seasons. Now that the team has embraced a complete rebuild I think he deserves this offseason where the team had a lottery pick, two young players and some nice complimentary pieces as well as a ton of caproom. In my mind it's very similar to the summer of 99 when the team drafted Jason Williams, traded for Webber and signed Divac.

If the team that plays next season (assuming there is a season) shows real progress and promise then I'm fine with Petrie continuing to steer this ship. But if he doesn't get it done this offseason when he has a stacked deck to work with then I think it's clearly time to move on. I'm betting he'll get it right.
