Staples could boot Clippers

"We actually could make more money if, instead of 40 Clippers games, we had five concerts," Tim Leiweke, president of the Anschutz Entertainment Group, was quoted as saying. "So, those are some of the decisions we're going to have to make. The Clippers' issue is in negotiations now. Their lease is up after this year.

"And ironically, shockingly, we've got to make a decision as to whether we even want them back. We're not sure."

That's sad, but funny.

no wonder their the worst managed team in all of pro-sports....

broadcasting from the playground could be an option. ;)

I am gonna be the first to speak out on this one, but let's go ahead and move the Clippers to the greater Sacramento area. You know they would fill seats if they were from Sac. They could be called the Sacramento Delta Clippers or the Port of Stockton Clippers...

How unviable are the Clippers?
They are soo unviable that...
...Donald Trump won't even invest in them.
...the Montreal Expos are making more money.
...people think they are one of the retracted WNBA teams.
...they give out free tickets to the homeless and the homeless burn them for warmth.
...they get a free turkey dinner at Thanksgiving.
...the Clippers must pay to get their games to air at 4am between Absizer and Vegomatic infomercials.
...Instead of having a light colored home uniforma and a dark coloroed away uniform, the Clippers are looking at a medium hue uniform they can use both home and away.

anyone else?

That is a remarkable statement. More money by having five concerts at Staples? That doesn't seem to bode well for the Sacramento arena proponents. Does it? Basketball games are ancillary to creating revenue at a downtown arena in Los Angeles?

Why not? Basketball is only played in the Arena about 25% of the time, leaving plenty of opportunity for other money making events as well.

They are considering dropping the Clipper's lease! Between the Lakers and the Clippers, there are 84 regular-season games at the Staples Center. Perhaps another 10 games during an avergae Laker playoff season. That is 94 possible basketball venues per year, which leaves about 271 open nights for concerts and dog shows. Even with that wiggle room, management is talking about dropping the Clippers lease. Anschutz must not make much on a typical Clipper game. It just doesn't sound right to me.

There's some funny math going on there too I think. Either that or the Clipeprs draw even worse than I thought.

If 1 concert is greater than 8 Clippers games, than either you have to be able to pack 8x as many people into the concert, or charge 8x as much per ticket. Since I doubt the Clippers draw THAT badly, and have to assume they at least fill the place halfway, even if there is extra seating at a concert down at the floor level, and even if you absolutely pack the house for every concert, you still need tickets to 4x as expensive or more? What's an average basketball ticket cost? $30 to $40? So what? $150 per ticket on AVERAGE for the concert??

The only other thing I can see is that maybe Staples gets to keep a larger percentage of the revenue off of a concert ticket than a basketball ticket. maybe. But there too there are problems because Los Angeles has TONS of places to put on a concert, far more than there are places to play basketball, and its hard to see Staples or anyone being able to try to gauge a concert promoter when he's got so many other venues to choose from.

I must be groggy or something. How does ANYTHING involving the Clippers relate to the Kings, except for the two games (it is still 2 games?) a year the lesser LA team comes to Arco?

I have to assume that agents for the Sacramento City Council are trying to determine if it makes economic sense for taxpayers to shell-out hundreds of millions of dollars to build a new arena for the Sacramento Kings. In the meantime, the owners of the Staples Center have publicly stated that there is so little income generated by Clipper games, that they are seriously considering voiding the Clippers' lease at the Los Angeles arena.

That is not much of an endorsement for the economic viability NBA arenas. In fact, I suspect that the statement by Anschutz got the attention of some folks in Sacramento. The negativity of the statement is so off-the-wall that I suspect intrigue. Are they trying to queer the Sacramento arena deal? Something is fishy. It doesn't make sense.

bballref.com has the Clips averaging 18,053 (18,997 is capacity) in 2002 and 17K last year. For the Clippers, those are gigantic averages considering that they averaged about 10K from 1993/94 to the lockout season. I believe their numbers have improved ever since moving to Staples because of low ticket prices (group discounts esp) and good multi-game packages. They offered those things while they were at the Sports Arena, but that place was a dungeon compared to the amenities that Staples offers.

QD, I'm not sure I see the connection between the Kings (or even Clippers:eek: ) impact on a city/region, and their viability as tenants in a privately owned building. The owners of Staples aren't making a decision based on what's best for the citizens of the area. Just on where they, as the owners of the building, get to keep the most pocket cash. One can imagine, if their funny math is at least somewhat valid, that the Lakers themselves in that case probably can't be worth more than 10 concerts or so to the owners. Do you think the citizens of L.A. would rather have 10 concerts in Staples, or the Lakers?

QD, is that an old pic of Tom Mix?
It's Hank Snow. He had 85 "tracked" C&W singles in the 50s and 60s, of which 43 were top-ten hits. His back-up band sounded like a legitimate Bluegrass band with some orchestration. His songs included Moving On, Golden Rocket, I've Been Everywhere, Rhumba Boogie, etc. I posted the picture after I researched the guy on the Net looking for the lyrics to A Fool Such As I. I had never heard the moniker, The Singing Ranger, plus, his outfit is too cool. The only place you might see an outfit like that anymore is on Castro and Market during the parade.

Port of Stockton Clippers?

Why not just Stockton Clippers and let them play here in Stockton.

Maybe A G Spanos might buy them out.

The ironic part is that Leiweke is involved in the New Arena in Kansas City (which would be ready in 2007) could the clips be sold to a KC group and play at Kemper arena for a year or two until the sprint center is ready??

Ooppsss, my bad!

Although my idea maybe a fantasy for us "Stocktonians", a pro team here might finally place Stockton in the Nor Cal map with bigger and bold letters. :D
