How good can the Kings be this year and how to we get there?

4-3 ... Who wudda thunk it?

So, what's the ceiling? sactowndog and a couple of others have talked in other threads about what we really need to work on. Since this is without-a-doubt a discussion we'll be revisiting all year, let's have it here instead of incrementally in different threads.

Thoughts?

ceiling is 35 wins in my opinion. I'd imagine with this pace they will eventually come back down to Earth with tired legs and fatigue, but we shall see what comes of it. Having a vet like Bjelica in there and Shumpert, even though he is a brick mason, has shown it's value.

Our guys may have smelled blood in the water with these early wins/close games against good teams...if that’s the case, this’ll be exciting....Fox, Hield, Bjelica, WC$, Bagley, Shumpert, Yogi, BOGDAN all looking pretty legit (except Bogdan but he was arguably our best basketball by a sizable margin last season)...
It’s starting to become really difficult to imagine all of these guys having a string of bad games at the same time.

It was easy to tell last season the Kings had a lot of talent but it was always about putting them in the right situation to succeed. So far we have done that and we have a lot of different types of players that compliment each other well. This isn't like the Mike Malone team in 2014 that only had Cousins. This team has depth, athleticism and shooting. If the Kings drop off it won't be by a lot I don't think.

I mentioned this in one of the post-game threads, I haven't been able to watch the Kings much to start off the season, but I've caught a lot of highlights and I'm planning on purchasing league-pass to watch replays. Anyways, I think our absolute ceiling is 45wins. However, there is a lot of obstacles in our way.

  1. Can the young players sustain this pace 40 games into the season? We're playing a very up and down game. However, I think fatigue will start to settle in before we hit the mid-point of the season. We have young players on this team who haven't been pushed to that limit, and I think it's unreasonable to expect them to be able to sustain this type of performance with this pace 40 games into the season. I think we'll see a lot of tired bodies. Tactically, the biggest reason why we are winning these games is because we're outgunning the opponnets.
  2. Will we play better defense? Finishing up the thought I said above, our defense has been pretty poor. Not sure if the stats from ESPN include the Miami game yet, but it says we give up 120ppg which is 3rd worst. We also give up 34.3 3pa/game which is the 4th most. Our DefRTG is 19th best. We'll really need to start tuning things defensively if we want to reach 45wins.
  3. Can the young players sustain their play? We went into this season unsure about which player would take the big step in their game to lead our offense. Fox has arguably taken the biggest step as our leader, but that's not to discredit the great improvements we've seen from WCS and Hield. However, the biggest question is how much can we take away from this 7 game sample size? Can these players do it on a consistent basis? Can they step up when the team needs them to? So far, we haven't had a moment where one of them completely takes over a game.
  4. Can the bench contribute effectively? I think Frank has done a good job so far as our backup PG. Bogi could be a real answer to help improve our bench. Games are also won with 2nd units. Right now, they're on the unproven end.
  5. Do we have a real SF on the roster? This is the biggest question mark for us. Iman Shumpert has done everything that's been asked of him so far, but his time in Cleveland paints him as a very inconsistent player. While he's a very strong player, he is slightly undersized. Is Justin Jackson the answer? His shooting consistency is not very good at the moment. I wouldn't say that we ask very much of him, but from what we've seen so far, he's not the answer right now. Is Bogdanovic the answer? Not sure about that either. I think he can play stretches at SF, but he faces the same problem Shump does in terms of size.. he just doesn't have it when you're talking about going up against the likes of Lebron, Durant, or Harris.
  6. Where does Bogdanovic come in play? I might be the only one trying to see where he'll fit on our team. There's no doubt that he improves our team, but if you place him with Fox, Buddy, Bjelica, and WCS, is there any gurantees that he won't disrupt any of the chemistry that they've developed? Remember, he's been rehabbing his injury since Summer before training camp. Bogdanovic is also more of a ball handler, which means he might take the ball out of Fox's hands. If we can slot him in as our starting SF without disrupting the chemistry, I'm 100% for that, although I'm not sure that he won't. I think we should bring him off the bench until the starters show that they need help on offense. We're only 4-3, but that's our best start in a long time. There's the saying of..."if it aint broke, don't fix it". I honestly think we'd be better off with a legitimate 3&D SF than a playmaking SF in the starting lineup.

I think if we were somehow able to add a proven 3&D SF on this team without giving up a key player, we might be able to capture 8th seed.

I'm posting something i wrote on Oct 6 in another thread... I guess I haven't missed by much... Maybe some shorter visioned teams in NBA could hire me somehow :)Screenshot.jpg

The big question is whether we can keep this pace and momentum up for the whole season. We are a young and experienced team so I do expect us to hit the wall at some point in the season. Either way it is exciting watching these guys play.

1. Opponents will get tired too. The key is bench improvement, so startets do not have to play heavy minutes. KK and Bogdan back can mitigate the issue.
2. Kings need to improve defense and I am sure they will. However, you have to consider pace when you compare defense between teams. Teams that play faster will on average score more and also give more points. We had that disscussion about glory days team too. They were actually pretty good on defense, while playing fast compared to the rest of league at the time.
3. I think they will improve, especially our rookies.
4. With everyone healthy we might add KK and Bogdan or Budy to the bench. We could also trade expiring contracts (ZBo, McL, Shumpert, KK) for good slightly overpriced SF (Porter).
5. Aside from the trade, I think Shump is good enough 5th option on offense and good defender. Bjeli is capable of defending bigger SFs. Joerger is good in using matchups.
6. I trust Joerger. Bogdan will be great addition to already good squad. The coach will find the best combination, and it might vary depending on matchups.

In addition to that, Kings are on a way of winning 46 games this year, based on current winning ratio against mostly good teams. However, teams will start scouting up and comming team, so I don't think the record will be that good.

It’s very hard for a team that’s not fast to practice how to play against speed.
You can not help to get caught up in the pace of the game and that good defense your used to playing as your team gets tired and winded goes away.
By the middle of the 3rd quarter when you are tired and your shots stop falling and then your opponent is pushing the ball even more because they do not have to take it out of bounds you have problems.

If the Kings continue this type of play and not force it when it’s not there (turn overs) they will surprise many people.

It may get to the point where they no longer circle our games on the calendar as a easy win but oh no we have to play the Kings. The pace effects them for a few games even after our game with them.

GO Kings!!!

we are a fringe playoff team. i expect us to make it. this is the year we break out.

not everything has to be sequential or systematic. growth doesn't have to be tapered. we are performing at a high level and should only get better as we espouse and ingrain good habits.

the statistical sample is growing. we are legit.

dont taper expectations. dont pinch yourself. dont use the small town, defensive mechanism kings mentality that it will all fall apart. this is not a mirror of the malone lead kings start to the season.

we are here. we have arrived. this is real. we have depth. our youngsters are balling. our vets are leading and supplementing our flow where needed. coach has turned a corner. bogdan hasnt played a minute. we are a a clean bill of health away from the post season.

If the Kings play like this all year I really don't care about their record, that will come. I am, finally, back in love with watching this team play.

All the years of sucking and of being a national laughing stock, I will bask in all this glory, as we all should. We aren't a playoff team, not with such a hole at the 3 and a bad bench, but for the first time in well over a decade, things look and make sense. Star guard, future star big man drafted, a suddenly very good big man in WCS, and Buddy, Bjelica, and Bogi. That's a good core. Potentially very good.

Our ceiling is 45 wins and the 8th seed in the playoffs!!!

We will need to focus on getting better on defense and rebounding.

The more we win, the more confidence we will get. Bagley will eventually need to earn his way into the starting line up. Beily or Bogdan will fill the starting small forward spot.

There it is. :)

I wanted to see this team win 35 games this year and so far they are exceeding my expectations as I expected them to struggle early. When we get Bogs back, Bagley starts earning some minutes and hopefully we see Jackson become a little more consistent as well as Giles maybe settling down and finding his spot those things should ease the fear of exploding out of the gate and fizzling midway through.

Besides, the whole league is playing faster and defenses are struggling. We're not in a vacuum so I think these things will hit everyone.
