How 'bout Petrie?

What if Petrie stepped up and coached the team (as well as GM)? He knows his stuff, and you can bet he'd command huge respect from the team.

Anybody know why he won't?

That'd be my first guess, so thanks for stating the obvious... I'm wondering why.

You don't think he could be persuaded by the Maloofs for the right deal?

Geoff Petrie isn't a coach. He's the President of Basketball Operations and General Manager. Why would he want to suddenly change careers, which is exactly what this would mean?

Riley and Thomas seem to handle it... well Riley anyways. It's been done before. I wouldn't say it's a career change as much as a chance for him to manage his design the way he envisioned.

I'm sure he's comfortable just the way things are. But, wouldn't you love to see how he'd do?

Just because one or two GMs can/want to do the job, doesn't mean it's right for everyone.

He's never coached a day in his life. I have absolutely no reason to believe he'd be able to do so successfully. So, to answer your question, "No. I personally have no desire whatsoever to see Geoff Petrie coach the Sacramento Kings. None. Zip. Nada. Zilch. None."

:)

Even if he could coach I think it would be a horrible idea. The Coach/GM is basically a failed experiment from the mid-90s. It rarely turns out well and this is true across all sports.

If you've ever attended games in Arco, Petrie is the man behind the curtain. He doesn't like the spotlight and prefers to work his magic behind the scenes. I simply cannot imagine him taking over such a high-profile media intensive position ... And that's in addition to all the other reasons why he simply wouldn't do it.

:)

Coaching and GMing really have little to do with each other. And success in one field not much to do with success in another. Geoff is in a nice and comfy spot upstairs, have o idea why he's want to pop downstairs at this late date. And if he did, he'd basically be the rawest of rookies. Scott Brooks or Kurt Rambis is comapratively a hoary old vet of the coaching world.

I am not saying he should be coach. But I think he should be able to be the coach. He sets the roster and SHOULD know what works best with what so he can get a better feel for what he needs. He should know this team inside and out and who works best with who. If he don't know that (which is what a coach is) then i would question him as the man in charge of bringing in who would work best with the team.
