Here We Build/Save the Kings Rally

Lukenbill always dreamed big. He was part of the team trying to lure the Raiders here with his stadium and cash to move the team. I personally think Al Davis was just trying to get the bids sweetened from other cities. He also organized the March on Baseball. He put together a huge group of fans and bussed them all down to Oakland to watch a game. Nearly filled the upper deck of the Oakland Coliseum. They all wore powder blue shirts to get attention. He must have loved that color since he picked that for the Kings road jersey too. Some think he was a little nuts, but damned if this town didn't have an NBA team called the Kings for the last 26 years and he was the front man for the group that got them here.

I remember that. It was during the '87 MLB season and the A's PA guy was saying "Let's hear it Sacramento!!" and the upper deck went nuts. I could've sworn the A's were Sac bound back then.

The Raiders thing is legit too. When the city of LA took him to court and claimed that the Oakland move was purely a money grab, Davis testified that if he wanted the best financial deal, he "would've moved to Sacramento."

When something as big as saving the Kings, is there any chance to give more than 1 day notice? I would have been able to make this had there been a few days or a weeks notice.

I just watched Fox 40 news and there was about 100 people attending the rally. I really feel if given advance notice, many more people might have shown up.

Agreed. I made it, but it took some last-minute plan changes to get there.

Thiswas organized by Carmichael Dave and co - they wanted it before the City Council meeting I think and have been so busy they probably just scheduled what they could last minute. This whole thing just started a week ago!

A weeks in advance notice seems like quite a bit don't you think considering how things have been transpiring so quickly these past few weeks?

If you read my post, I also said a few days notice. Sorry, 24 hour notice just doesn't give many people time to plan to try and attend.

I agree, more than a 24 hr notice would have made for a bigger turnout - although I certainly appreciate all of Carmichael Dave's efforts. Hey Dave, you should run for city council to really start having a major impact around here. But seeing you live in Carmichael (or anywhere outside city limits) you can't. Just another reason the regional political power structure in control is nothing but a worthless cabal.

I arrived just before 5:00pm and I would have to put the crowd at approximately 150 folks and that doesn't count the media.

I'll post some pictures I took from the event once they're downloaded to my hard drive.

It was a great event to attend and be a part of. I hope there will be another one like this soon.

I am proud of what Carmichael Dave has done in such a short amount of time, but I am also proud of those with Here We Stay, KingsFans.com and other Kings fans for all their continuing support to save our Sacramento Kings.

On a side note I wanted to share a story. As a die-hard Sacramento Kings fan since day one, I always wanted to meet Mr. Gregg Lukenbill, shake his hand and thank him for all he had done for our community.

As a Sac State student I would always drive home from school and drive by his business, but never got the courage to park my car and walk in to ask to meet him.

When I heard that he was going to be at the rally today, I made it my mission to finally make that happen.

After the rally I spoke with some members of Here We Stay but I also looked around for him but never saw him so I figured he had disappeared.

Then I saw him walk by and I immediately walked up to him, thanked him and we shook hands. We had a brief conversation and I asked if we could take a picture together. He was more than happy to and thanked me for being a Kings fan. One more wish has been granted from my wish list bucket.

Here I am with the man who had the leadership and vision to not only bring an NBA team to Sacramento, but also built two arenas within a 3 year span with no public dollars, Mr. Gregg Lukenbill. It was an honor and pleasure to finally meet him.

Two short videos of the Here We Build rally at Cesar Chavez Park. It gives you a pretty good idea of what the crowd was like.

I had always heard that Al Davis suckered about 10 million from the city and that was just another reason why Sacramento was hesitant to do business with sports owners again. I don't think there is any chance Al was ever serious about coming to Sacramento and we're lucky we didn't get fully shook down the way Irwindale did.

Nah they haven't.. Was a huge deal here though in the early 90s. We already had all the shirts and stuff printed with Sacramento Raiders and stuff.. Was neat. I still have a Sacramento Raiders hat in the attic at my parents house.

It would have made too much sense for them to move here though.. It would have opened the doors for the A's to come as well.

Think of it.. Sac could have had the A's, Raiders, and Kings.. We would have been a booming city with sellouts galore. Would have been huge.. Now we might have nothing.. At least the Rivercats are doing REAL well. Tops in the league in attendance.

SMH...I never been to Sacramento but I hear that and I just feel SAD. Sad sad sad...wasted opportunity because of why? my goodness man...

If I remember correctly, there was something like a 50 million bond issued to help bring a team here. When the deal fell apart, Sacramento got lights on the K street bridge and other such niceties instead. The city squandered the money rather than simply pay the ~300K it would've taken to cancel the bonds.

That was a long time ago and I maybe way off on those details.

Not that close, Sacramento simply got played just like the Kings were with "that" coach from Orlando.

I was at the rally. There would have been more people that showed up if there was more notice. I stayed to hear Lukenbill speak then had to catch the light rail home after a long day at work.

Joe Maloof was apparently a no-show.

Did he say he was coming and then flake? I can't imagine any reason why he would say he'd show up ... he would have nothing to gain. Maybe he said he'd show up and then every last friend or advisor he has held him back - it would have been lunacy for him to show up.

I really think it was a lot closer than some people think.. We were starting to build a stadium for them and everything. I was about 15-17 years old at the time but I remember it being huge news, and people jumping on the bandwagon buying up apparel and stuff. (Even myself).

Those guys are knuckleheads. While they reported the attendance at 100, they said that there was some dispute about that as others had it at 400. Of course, I guess they didn't even bother to try to estimate or count numbers themselves.
