help needed: any guitarists in the house?

hi, i have an acoustic mp3 (with vocals) that i am trying to convert into an acoustic piece without vocals (no luck in trying to digitally strip it out). so i had a friend write up the song by ear, thinking that i can then take the sheet music and feed it into a program to output a guitar mp3.

unfortunately, my friend wrote it down in a text file just by telling me what the chord letters are, matched with the lyrics. so...anyone know how i take that and actually translate it to sheet music? i am also musically retarded. x_x

any help is appreciated.

I was poking around google to see if I could help, the biggest problem is that most guitarists don't learn to read sheet music, they learn to read chord charts and guitar tablature and rely on this for the entirety of their musical life, and most guitar resources online reflect this.

When I was young and was trying to learn guitar (which I eventually gave up, so don't take my word as gospel), I had an instructor who insisted on sheet music and he had these posters that had all the common chords and their finger positioning laid out. Some would also have the sheet music representation of the chord as well. Your best bet would be to search for one of these. If you have a music shop nearby you could probably go there and get one of these posters or just a beginning guitar book that is based on sheet music. Otherwise try googling on terms like beginning guitar sheet music or guitar chords to sheet music.

I know there is software that converts tablature to sheet music, so there must be some for chord sheets as well, whether or not its free is a good question.

Good luck!

i think option 1 is out, it would take me more than the week i have to put together the notes using the charts...wish i had paid more attention in music class... =T

i will try to see if your digital methods may work bozz, but i doubt it. the original mp3 came from recording off of youtube so i only think there's one audio track anyway.

thanks a lot for the advice!

Yeah, I should have mentioned I tried doing this before (in the 80's so I'm sure music software is better) but putting notes in by hand even with the sheet music was awful. I gave up because the synthesized guitar on my Apple ][gs was painful to listen to.

Can your guitarist friend who did the chord charts for you re-record it for you himself?

nah, he doesn't have the software and probably wouldn't have time to do it in the week either. these last minute wedding things really come out of nowhere, haha.

So what you're trying to do is basically convert the mp3 into an instrumental? Right? I use a variety of programs of editing music... but what might best suite you is Goldwave. Try using the reduce vocals setting and tamper with the equalizer settings. It's fairly easy to do effects on there because there's only one tab for effects. I play guitar in my free time, and I know how to read notes for the most part. I'd be glad to help you out editing the track or attempting to re-create the instrumental on my composition program.
