Don't Make Me Use The Bat

Peja ( A ) -- as anyone who reads these grades knows, I am a consistent critic of Peja's when he plays soft. Just not a trait the great ones have. Well tonight he was NOT soft. Kind of reminded me a little bit of that game last year when Posey started beating on him and Peja responded by dropping his career high on him. Now THAT'S the way the great ones respond. Poor boardwork, but on this night the poor rebounding numbers were not actually an indicator of his overall aggression. Continued a welcome recent trend by setting up teammates several times when he was being aggressively mugged by Harpring. By nature Peja has tunnel vision on offense -- only working for his own shot. But there have been several games recently where he's been looking to set up teammates -- making other guys better. Gets the A here not only for the numbers, but for the spirit and style of it too. Got into a chippy shoving match with Harpring and McLeod at one point there (might even end up getting fined, although hopefully not suspended), and you could see that Webber loved it even as he went over to break it up. That was my reaction too -- he responded with fire, and did not wilt.
Webber ( A ) -- big strong efficient game, and damn near earned the "+" tonight for being a real leader for us out there tonight. Grabbed rugged boards and had everybody's back on a night when we got into a real war with the Jazz. Had a few problems with Boozer early (so did Miller and Peja when switched on him) but dominated the matchup from the 2nd onward. Seemed to feed off of the energy of the kids as the game went along, and got his hands on a lot of balls. Brought the ball up the court on several occasions as we ran PG (or point PF) by committee. Made a spectacular play in the third that few PFs can dream of -- cleanly picking the pocket of a PG with those great hands and heading on down the court for a breakaway dunk. But the story of this game from him as far as I am concerend was his leadership in a tough physical game.
Miller ( A ) -- one of his most aggressive games in weeks. Got off to a slow start in the first quarter, but then kicked it into gear and got involved. Hit almost everything he put up, and was not doing that annoying hesitation thing with his shots. Also really helped us with his passing on a night when we had no PG and an inexperienced backcourt. Went to war with Webb on the glass, and in a tough physical game did not get into his tiresome argue-with-the-refs chippiness. This was All-Star Brad tonight. One minor tick -- still missing FTs, and needs to get his stoke figured out.
Evans ( B- ) -- first note: took a scary scary fall in the last two minutes as he was clotheslined by Carlos Boozer and pulled out of the air. Lay on the floor for a long long time and was bleeding from the ear. As for the game itself: not as good as his recent efforts, but still a contributor. Looked out of rhythm on offense, and there I wonder if the lack of Bibby, with whom he has a real chemistry, might have hurt. In any case, for one of the few times this season did not always play within himself, forced some one on one type shots, and that's not what he does well. Still had his daily spectacular dunk of course, this one courtesy of Miller. Defense was on and off. Made some mistakes, but hustle as always.
House ( C- ) -- got the start, and came out in the first half and really struggled. Just again looked unable to run the team. Got pulled mid-1st and did not return until after halftime. Rick did him a favor and ran a play for him right out of halftime which got him a free hoop. Seemed to settle him a little. Still was not good, but wasn't an actual detriment therafter. Had some moments where he showed defensive quickness the likes of which we haven't seen in Sacramento in some time. Took an ill-advised quick shot late which annoyed me, but made up for it by hitting a big shot in the last two minutes.
Martin ( B- ) -- was less unhappy with his game than his shooting numbers might indicate. But about the shooting -- the good is that he is clearly showing the game of a primary offensive weapon including the ability to post up smaller guards and drive aggressively to draw fouls. The bad is that he fell back into his training camp habit of forcing the drive and charging into the lane out of control. Might work in a small college against lesser athletes, not in the NBA with behemoths patrolling the paint. Made a couple of forces on the selfish side where he could have found teammates but looked for his own shot instead. But also found Peja for a couple of big open threes in the 4th that really gave us a boost. Gave us excellent energy on defense, and showed the ablity to harass PGs -- with his quickness and lack of bulk I think he might be able to help us there as his career progresses. Saw both Adelman and Webber talking to him as the game went along and he made mistakes -- but not angrily, just as teachers. He'll learn.
Barnes ( A- ) -- best game from Matt in a long time. On a night when we really had no PG, Matt went back and showed some of that great versatility that was so intriguing about him early in the season. He's a SF, but he really sees the floor, and he was very effective running the point for us tonight. Gave us hustle and athleticism, and was mostly in control. Also unfortunately started to get a little sloppy again late, and he's just got to find ways to cut down those mistakes if he wants to regain consistent playing time.
Songaila ( A- ) -- not as good as either of our starters tonight, and you could feel the team losing momentum with him in there in place of Miller in the mid to late 4th. But still a strong efficient game. Had a few defensive issues, but nothing serious. Got on the glass for us. Made an impressive one handed running dunk in the 4th.
Tag ( INC ) -- the first victim of Utah's aggression tonight. Brief 2nd quarter stint ended when he got smacked in the mouth and looked like he had his two front teeth knocked out. Lot of blood in the mouth. Made a nice pass to a slashing Evans or Barnes (I forget which) before exiting stage left.

Adelman ( A+ ) -- A+...not much more to say. Again very shorthanded -- we had three explosive scoring guards sitting next to each other in street clothes (Bobby, Bibby, Mobley) and ran away with this one on the strength of our starting frontcourt. THIS was the frontcourt that I think we all hoped for before the season. Three All-Stars playing at an All-Star level. But Rick also explored his entire bench tonight, and by mixing and matching all of our young guards and swingmen, found enough support to win the game. Without a true point, kept on switching up who played point throughout the game. House, Barnes, Webber and Martin all took turns. And the team's spirit tonight was excellent. Utah wanted to play football out there, and our team fought back big time. Its possible we could lose Peja or Webber to a suspension, but you know what? I don't care. We fought. We cared. We were not soft. Great to see.

i totally agree with adelman's grade. he really found the best combinations of players to put out on the court, and it seemed like we forced utah to have to make adjustments, instead of the other way around. the rest of the grades are good as well. on par with the performance. team grade: A+. the guys played a helluva game, shorthanded at that. they played solid, gritty defense for most of the game, and after the first quarter and apart from a few lapses, seemed very in control. nice game kings!!!

Brick - Tag has false teeth in front, has had for about 6 years give or take. All the blood was from the split lip that required 6 stitches.

:D

My team grade? A+

It's all about team, baby, and we got it!!!

Perfect grades, I agree with every single one. Adelman is really showing that he can coach no matter what injuries hit his team(like every year). C-Webb is really starting to suck up the boards and starting to drive to the basket(well).I think tonight Chris & Peja both showed that they are leaders on this team. Brad got Fired up to, and as bad as it was to see Mo go down, it fired me up to see the team rush to surround him. Not to mention C-Webb standing up for his guy and letting Boozer know he crossed the line. Thats showing real leadership, and Maurice will remember that.

I think this is the most A's I've seen from Brick. :)

Brad 9/10 21 pts!!! He shoot the ball!! And shot well!

Great win and game. Sound like a good energy game. GO KINGS!

on a similar note, this game could very well have been an important game for the kings. it showed a lot about the heart and depth of this team, a heart and depth that many are still questioning. with the addition of cuttino mobley, and the growth that such players as maurice evans and matt barnes have shown, we could have ourselves something special here. i dont know if it will all pan out in the end, but i find myself believing more now then i did at the start of the season. seeing peja get into harpring's grill tonight....wow....that was a welcome sight. and seeing webber get up into boozer's face after boozer had fouled mo evans really hard.....that was also a welcome sight. these guys seem to meshing together. they care about each other....and its clear the team chemistry is still intact, contrary to popular belief. alotta the faces are new (and we still have to see how the cat fits in), but the chemistry is still there. i think the rest of the nba needs to watch out for the kings. the elite better keep their heads up. we're in their rearview mirror. i can feel it. :)

I'm not an advocate of violence, fighting or anything like that, but I liked what I saw from Peja....and boy oh boy did Webb too. I don't think he's ever been prouder, or at least that what it seemed liked. He was borderline estatic at the end of that whole scruffle....

That Evans fall looked really rough and had everyone holding their breath.

Good game from the front court, they really held things together...and they should have. They are all All-Stars and they played like that when the Kings needed them.

Point-guard by committee did all right tonight, but get well soon Mike!

Dang, I missed a good one. I was at the party and they didn't have NBA Pass. Now that I've seen the grades I am really regretting that I didn't stay at home.

After today's PBP by VF I am thinking about moving to Sacramento! :D

Good grades, and I'll agree with the comment that this is the most A's I've seen distributed.

Reading the AP report on the game, I noticed these two quotes from the Jazz:

``Sometimes it's physical, (but) sometimes it's not when you're playing hard that things happen,'' said Boozer, who dropped by the Kings' locker room afterward to check on Evans."

"``The thing that bothered me as much as anything (was) when they came to the basket, we got those little touch fouls,'' he said. ``If you're going to play like it's a giveaway game, I guess that's OK, but this is the NBA, and you're allowed to foul guys. There's no rule against it, as long as you don't do anything malicious. There was a couple of things that appeared to be malicious, but I really don't think they were.''

Can't fault Boozer much if had enough class to go check on the guy, but I also like Sloan's comment -- you're allowed to foul guys. I might quibble with the "there's no rule against it", but nevertheless, amen, Mr. Sloan.

I disagree very strongly and always have with Jerry Sloan's philosophy about fouling. His team has always played dirty and it's hurt a lot of players.

It's certainly a very fine line, and I think it's also a line that blurs depending on which team you are cheering for. Before I had reason to dislike the Jazz (read: before the Kings success in the postseason hinged on beating the Jazz), I enjoyed watching Stockton play, setting picks in the lane against big guys, etc. If you were a fan of the Jazz, his play was scrappy, gutsy, etc. If you weren't, that same play was dirty, underhanded, etc.

Great grades, great game... Not a fan of fighting but absolutly loved watching Pedja straightne out McLoud and Harpring who had been pulling on him, holding and being basic punks all night. Worth every peny of the fine he will probably get. Also I cant say enough about how solid Brad was even early on when he was rebounding as well, or shooting much. He was getting pushed arround and adjusted, and pushed back rather than whine about it. By the end of the 3rd quarter it was clear Boozer did not want any part of Bard and layed of of him.

So much for the Kings being a soft team that doe not play D... now lets paly this way against everyone else!

And if they can't do it every night, at least do it often enough so that teams remember they're capable of doing it.

;)

Good grads Brick!

Was great seeing Peja so agressive. Hop he starts doing that more.....

I was a bit ho-hum with this team so far but with the change in roster... Im starting to see this team and myself come alive again!:D

i am very upset that I didn't have a chance to watch this game, mostly because of the PEDJA SCUFFLE........ This could be the only one in his career and I missed it ...........

HEY, now.

What a gutsy game, missing Bibby & Doug seemed to put a fire under everyone to step up and get the win AND DO IT WELL! Everyone deserved their "A" grades, especially Adelman. I enjoyed watching Web, Peja, Martin, Evans...and even Brad bring the ball up the court. Martin was hot with the pass a couple of times and this gives me hope. Even Peja made some good assists, they got the job done and well, I thought. I hope this continues.

Maybe the "new blood" and injury to Bibby invigorated and inspired what seemed to be a somewhat flat and bored look I've seen of late. Can't wait to see what Cuttino brings on Saturday!

Wish I had seen that. I'm so pissed I didn't get a chance to. :(

But thanks heaps for the grades and the commentary, Brick! As always, loved reading through it! :)

I was impressed by C-Webb...perfect shoot selection and true leadership. Utah Jazz look like butcher shop open 24/7....the only guy that doesn't fit there is Girichek.

#26
great game and grades... sucks that there was no kings game on national TV for like 25 days..........................

Usually peja doesnt get much respect from the refs... no fouls called for all the mugging that he takes... did that scuffle change anything? did any fouls get called on harpring or anyone else mugging him after that?

I'd bump Webb to the +, just for shoving Boozed and yelling at him after he fouled Mo.

And a big, fat F for Sloan. I'm tired of seeing someone get hurt every time we play them.

#28
vf--looks like Pedja heard what you said about that foul....ok, it wasn't really a foul he was giving.. but it sure was good to see him stand up....although I wouldn't want to see that alot from him.

We are fortunate that Webber didn't fire on Boozer. That throw-down really pissed me off. Did anyone else notice that Boozer cooled it after the Evans injury. It is indeed fortunate that this game didn't wind up like Little Fallujah (Auburn Hills).

I guess the Kings and Jazz have ressurected the old Utah-Sacramento rivalry. We actually have some pretty tough guys. Webber, Ostertag, Miller, and Stojakovic would match up well against any self-proclaimed tough team. The next round ought to be interesting.

It was really wierd seeing three really good NBA point guards sitting on our bench in street clothes. Wait until we get back to full strength.
