From Indifference to Love...Sac-Town will Truly Miss C-Webb

The day Webber came, I hated his ignorant comments against the Kings. The same can be said of this past summer's comments about the "tough guys" on the team. Between those two points, I went on a rollercoaster, thru the season, into the playoffs, smack into another letdown...

A chain of these set up some weird emotions inside me. There were times when I couldn't love C-Webb more. There were also times when I couldn't believe what he just said, or couldn't believe he was being so selfish with the ball, or couldn't believe he let us down like that. Obviously, I had my doubts about other players, but he was usually the one I lay all of my unsettled feelings on.

I think I now see that was because he was always taking responsibility of this team, striving, driving, running toward a championship coming to Sacramento and the beloved Arco. With each high and low, my feelings and every day life went with them.

Even though I've only experienced 16 years of life, and obviously there are many people on this board and throughout Sacramento who remember the hard times in Kings history. Those days are faint to me, yet, I get the feeling of understanding of them. With respect to the people who truly know how it is to have the lows, and not just the highs, I'd like to say part of the Kings and my sport's heart left with 3 figures... CW4.

The high was obviously the 2001-2002 season. Playing amazing offense and stellar defense, we had the largest margin between points scored and points against in the league. Riding the wave, the Kings entered the playoffs. From beating the Jazz to winning out in Dallas, nothing compared to the Western Conference Finals. Even now, I know I don't remember it all. I blacked a lot of it out. That was a cause of the latter lows. With Bibby on the rise, Vlade distributing like no other, Bobby J being the high-octane spark and all-around effort, DC doing all the little things, but always a consistant road block to the basket, C-Webb playing the best basketball of his life, in an unexplainable way. Even though Peja was hurt, he was there with us, in heart. Guiding Hedo (Hedo, HE DO!) to play his best. Through the hard fouls, late shots, and major drama, they tryed their hardest.

The low must be now. With Vlade leaving over the summer, Peja doing the worst of any of his campaigns in the NBA, Bobby J injured yet again, Christie shipped off to Orlando (although I do enjoy Mobley...). And now...Webbs gone.

With Webbs early summer court predicament and late summer comments, I believed I entered the season with him under my "Hate" column. Since then, he has given me every reason not to do just that. I never, even back sine 2000, thought I would be this heartstruck from losing him. It hurts even more not understanding the trade, but we can only hope Petrie knows best. We can also only hope Webber can finish his career with success and dignity. Good Luck Chris...

The only top-6 player who is left is Bibby. Granted, Brad Miller isn't too shabby himself. But Bibby, this is your time to shine. Be the king of Kings Mike.

(maybe this is too long, but il post it anyway...cuz its how i feel... and maybe some ppl will agree...i can only hope)

First of all let me say that if you are truly 16 years old, I MUST applaud you. You have written one of the most well thought out, coherent and compelling posts this evening. What you say is true. I myself have also the love/hate thing for C-Webb. I value his talent and love his boyish entusiasm at times, but what I don't like were those inconsitencies. I found myself shouting WHY in frustration many times these past 2 seasons. Other times I couldn't get enough of him. Bottom line is he will be missed and he will not be forgotten as one of THE most well loved and best Kings player ever.
Thank you again for the breath of fresh air you brought to this board tonight.

I have faith in the abilities of the STARS left on this team. If Webber was not on the team this year I have every reason to believe Miller and Peja would be considered part of the elite players in the league this season.

thanks

I have serious hopes of becoming a sports writer, so that gives me a boost of confidence that I probably need.

And, in case you got lost in the shuffle of all the new members, welcome to the board!!!

If this post is any indication of what we can look forward to in the future from you, I'm glad you decided to join our family.

GO KINGS!!!

BJ43 - good post. Are you really 16? :) For the record, I never had a love/ hate relationship for Webb. It's always been nothing but love.

Great post! Lots of good memories! I have never hated Webb, but I do remember being very angry at him when he didn't show up to training camp the first day after he was traded to the Kings. But from the first moment I saw him play I loved this guy. It's been a bumpy road, with lots of highs and lows, but I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Great post. Very thoughtful. While I felt Webbers comments this summer were unfortunate, I understood they were given at a time of high emotion, much like Pedjas asking to be traded. Whats more unfortunate is people people who use the past to sow division and derision.

I'm a WEBBER fan, I started watching him when I was A senior in high school and he was a (freshman)Fab Fiver. He is a winner, (2 consecutive NCAA title appearances) granted he's never won a national championship or an NBA title, but when has Golden State seen the playoffs since his departure? What about the Washington Wizards/Bullets??? Even the mighty Jordan couldn't get them back to the playoffs. And the Kings were a joke! He alone turned around this franchise, and through his journey I became a Kings fan. But No Longer. It's funny how no one remembers 2 years ago being put out by Dallas when he tore up his knee, with 30+ points the only King scoring, Dallas couldn't contain him, but THE KINGS couldn't match the MAVS 3point shooting, so was that Webbers fault too. I thought Peja was the specialist for that???? What about last year against the T-Wolves, Peja vs Spree, where was the scoring???? Webber held his own vs the league MVP, where was the rest of the team. And I'm not in Cali so I don't know all the gossip, but if I remember correctly Peja wanted out because his "Buddy" Divac was gone! Not CWebb! He wanted to be a King. I keep reading the Kings are 13-2 when Peja is the leading scorer and 0-1,000,000 when he's not. Well that's a little slanted because obviously when his shots are going down he will probably be the leading scorer as much as he shoots and the Kings will score alot....and they will win! But on the other hand, if he still shoots the same shots and they don't go down, his points are low but his attempts aren't???? So who's inconsistant???? Pay Webber the respect he deserves. No, you aren't going to be a better team Now or in the Long Run. Your team has made the biggest blunder in team history. Go Philly!!!

Personally, I don't really think so. Short term, may hurt...long term...yet to be seen. But I think it'll be good. :)

Have fun rooting for your new team.

I have to admit; I opened this the other day, read the first paragraph, and mistook it for yet another gloating post about the departure of CWebb. I mumbled a few choice words and closed it rather than reading on. I think it was the little "news" icon that compelled me to come back and give it a full read, and now I feel like a dope for not giving it the chance it deserved straight out of the gate.

That was a very honest and well-written summary of a fan's journey these past years... and past days.

Bravo.

...

i really appreciate the praise...in my perfect world, the sacbee will put it in the sports forum tomorrow(sunday)... either way, ya, thanks again

This is a wonderful topic, so how can I resist a reply.:)

I, for one, have been a Webber fan since the day I started watching the Kings. And while that might have been a little late to see all of his mess-ups, he has and will always be one of my favorite players. I am extremely heart-broken by his departure, if not only for our team's chance at winning, but for the team's mental stability. I taped the game tuesday, not knowing it would be his last, and I can't stop watching it, seeing the way he interacted with the other guys, how he smiled after great plays, and cheered his teammates on. I know that Bibby and him were great friends, and watching them play against each other today is gonna be hard.

I KNOW that the trade has hurt us at the present time, but for everyone saying 'it will help in the long run'- That doesn't mean anything to me, cause if we win a championship in 5 years, after we've 'rebuilt' the team, it won't be the same as if we won a championship now, with Webb, Bibby, Miller, etc. Sure, it would be great for 'the kings', but not the kings I know and love. I still want to see the 2002 team win the championship, but that time has passed, just like the rebuilt team I love NOW's chance has passed.

It broke my heart reading that Webber wanted to win a championship with the Kings, and wanted to retire as a King- which I would've loved.

The only thing that makes me feel better is that now he does have a chance at a ring, even if it isn't with the Kings.

And I know it's wierd, but I'm a Sixers fan now, as well as a Kings fan, simply because I'm a Webber fan just as much as a Bibby fan.

And that pretty much says it all. I think a LOT of us will always remember that as the time we really could have, should have won it all. And the realization that it's unequivocally over finally hit when Webber boarded that plane out of here for the last time.

:(

I am just so confused! Where do you go when your favorite player gets traded? I have never been through this emotional rollercoaster before, and (pathetic as it may sound) I feel as if I've lost a brother! I am a Sac native and my interest in basketball began when I started watching CWebb play for the Washington Bullets. When he joined us in Sac I was ELATED and I have enjoyed every second of watching him play ever since. What do I do now? Are you allowed to support two teams? If by some freak miracle some NBA Final in the future finds Sac vs Philly who do I root for? Someone HELP, I just feel depressed!

Exactly VF21 *starts crying again*

I always watched teams like the Hornets and Hawks thinking, 'how can their fans really stay loyal when every game they have to watch their team lose'

My biggest fear is that after this whole reconstruction is done, I'll be one of those fans watching my team lose.

I really want to experiene the happiness I did in the season again, and hopefully not to far off from now.

EmKingsFan4,

I know how you feel, and I am going to be a fan of 2 teams now, and even more when the rest of my guys split up. It really sucks to see them part, but maybe I'll find even more players to appreciate in Philly, but never as much as in SacTown
