From 2009 Cellar Dwellers to 2010 Contenders

Could the Kings be the next Boston Celtics? Can we become contenders in 2010?

Feb 19 trade deadline is closing in, and almost every other day now a Kings player's name (either Brad, John, Mikki, even K9) is always mentioned. So I can't help hoping that Petrie finally cooks a great recipe to rid all unneeded contracts a year earlier.

One night, I dreamed that the Miami deal (Miller and Thomas for Marion and a filler), worked out. And the once rumored Portland deal (Salmons and Moore and filler for Lafrentz and filler) came to fruition. And all off a sudden it was already November 2009.

The kings just shed off 40M (Brad 12M, K9 8M, BJax 6M, Reef 6M, Mikki 6M,Douby 2M) from the payroll. Marion signed an offer from the Kings for 15M/y (3 year). Drafted Rubio (PG) and Thabeet (C) - with Petrie magic, I guess. Then got a preseason trade with the Clippers: Kaman for Udrih and 2010 first round pick.
Kings roster is now

PG - Rubio, Brown
SG - Martin, Garcia
SF - Marion, Greene
PF - Hawes, Thompson
C - Kaman, Thabeet

Hawes, Thompson, and Greene gained more pounds. A new coach was calling the game. Turned into a very good rebounding team. Arco is loud and wild again. And the Kings suddenly plummeted as early division leaders.

But suddenly, my girlfriend pinched my nose and said! "Wake UP!! Time to go to work! It's Jan 29, 2009 and you've got a deadline to meet."

OH! SH********T!!!!!

I dont think that team would contend.....

Maybe the first year or 2, but it could grow together with some stability for a change. Marion would bring great SF defense, and the Kings would have a couple shot blockers down low in Spencer and Thabeet. Offensively they could hang with anyone, they could get out and run, or pound down low with Thompson, Kaman, and Spencer with some bulk. Rubio's development would be the key to this new look team. I like the idea, and it is much better than most outlooks of the Kings. A lot of things have to go right for such a quick turnaround though, and the players must develop team chemistry, but a lot of things have to go right to contend in any sport.

That's cool as long as Marion never takes a shot outside of 5 ft. What an ugly, ugly thing.

You better go back to sleep.

With the exception of maybe getting both Thabeet and Rubio at the same time, I think the lineup is pretty much possible to come by if Petrie successfully unloads Moore, K9, Miller, and Salmons for expirings before next season starts.

The key here is basically getting at least 2 solid vets a SF(since Greene looks to be needing another year to finally contribute solidly) and either a PG(a good backup at worst since more like were going for a PG this draft) or a C (a solid backup or somebody to solidy a 3 big man rotation with Hawes and Thompson)

This could led to a possible lineup of

PG - draft pick (Teague/Rubio/Jennings/), Udrih (or a vet if his shipped)
SG - Martin, Garcia
SF - FA - Marion (we'll I think he will complement Martin's defensive woes better than other FA SF of 2009), Greene (Marion can teach him a lot defensively)
PF - Thompson, draft pick (late first or maybe a trade for backup big)
C - Hawes, Trade - Kaman (at best his my guy, but I can live with Priz or any big man who can body up an grab rebs)

it's not much uglier than Kmart's. With that lineup we may have two of the league's ugliest jumpshots on the floor at the same time.

You, good sir, have no idea of the magnitude of your wrongness. At no point does Marion's shot resemble anything different than a worker heaving the catch of the day onto the loading truck. Martin, has a low start point, but his finish isn't bad at all.

We need a superstar player. Somehow. Dunno how we get them to want to come here, but it's probably gotta be something like how it happened with Webber. Maybe Carmelo?
