Ex-Monarch Pamela McGee now coaching at Sac High!

From today's SacBee, Pamela McGee, who played for the Monarchs' original 1997 team, was named the new head coach of the girl's b-ball team at Sacramento High School!

She replaces John Langston, who coached the Sac High Dragons for 10 years, and reportedly will be named as an assistant at San Jose State Univ.

Good luck in the coming season, Pamela!

The only bump to her career is that she just missed Vicki Baugh!

I was thinking the exact same thing after I typed my original post! Too bad she didn't get to the school's coach a few years earlier! But, oh well! Maybe she'll find another hot young talent!

Updated story

Today's SacBee has an updated and slightly revised version of their original story. Here it is:

Once again, congratulations and good luck to you, Pamela! Nice to see you back in Sactown! Good luck to her son (who is on the University of Nevada-Reno b-ball team) as well!
:)

BTW, I wonder what her twin sister, Paula, is doing these days?

They had quite a bit of talent on that team around Baugh, they were incredibly stooopid good with her. From what I remember of Barnes, she was very solid playing with Baugh or behind her. Everybody else there is still faster than anybody they'll see in their conference except maybe Grant. That field they'll be playing in for that tournament will be interesting...

We should take in a field trip & support our former player;)
That's great to see many former players become coaches.
I'm juiced to see that the Dragons are also winning.

Absolutely! Let's dust off the old McGee gear and head out to a game ;)...Checking the ol' schedule.....

How about one of the the two against McClatchy (@ McClatchy 1/8 or @ Sac High on the 30th) or the show down at the end of the regular season against Grant for a good little arch enemy action @ Sac High on Feb 13th? The gym was rocking for that game last year!

Pam McGee Field Trip Night

Time to dust off the Pam McGee Monarchs jerseys (or her USC Women of Troy gear for that matter) and head out to Sacramento High School for our now annual field trip ;) Not like we need a reason to wear purple, or to watch good basketball, but the fact that we have a good one makes it all the better, no?

Here's the date

Wednesday: February 13th 7pm @ Sacramento High School

They'll be facing cross town rivals Grant High School @ 7pm

Come out and support a member of the inaugural Sacramento Monarchs team.

PM me if you need further details. Be there, or be um, square as they say....;)

Field Trip Report

I made my way out to Sac High Wednesday night and oddly enough I ended up dressed in Grant's colors (note to self for next time, better wardrobe planning). Also lost on me this trip was the fact that it was senior night.

They only have one senior there this year, unlike last year where it seemed like half the team was a senior because the ceremony was LOOOOONG, and they lugged out a rocking chair for point guard Quanisha Turner to sit in while she was honored by her coach and teammates. Very nice touch and the "gifts" she received from her teammates required some explanation from coach McGee. Like last year where two of their players went on to division I schools, Turner, the crowd was told, is heading to IUPUI - I only know how to pronounce the acronym, I never remember what it stands for so I looked it up in case anybody out there cared lol, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Before I say anything else, I'll say these two things, we REALLY need a big contingent of Monarchs fans to go out to a game next season. I think coach would get a kick out of it and the support. Second thing, these young women appear to be in good hands - they lose an all american, only have one senior, one junior, and a bunch of sophomore or freshman and they haven't missed a beat. In a rousing finale to her salute to her point guard - McGee tells the crowd that the program's goal is to get all these young women into a college program.

I don't sense that's going to be a tough goal to reach. Turner finished with a double double 14pts/13asts but the night belonged to a sophomore Kyra Dunn who did her one better by triple doubling with an insane 15pts/12reb/16blks. Not that I tracked that mind you, I was saying to the person I was sitting with that, between Dunn and (Erica) Barnes in the paint, they had to have gotten their team average 9 blocks by the end of the first quarter! I'm not sure my facetiousness was that far off.

For instance...Here was how their first quarter run started....

Block by Dunn, fast break outlet pass, layup on the other end.....Grant ball...Block by Dunn, fast break outlet pass, layup on the other end...Time out Grant....inbounds...Grant missed shot(affected by Dunn)...3pointer on the other end by Sac High. Had the makings for a whole lotta ugliness for the visitors sounds like huh? If not for the fact that Grant runs like the wind too and can play some defense when it wanted to, it would have been. But they hung around for a while getting to within 7 at the half and once again in the 4th.

Dunn fouled out late in the fourth and as she came off the floor, McGee had her kids on the bench get up and give Dunn a standing O as she went to the bench. The PA announcer mentioned the triple double shortly after that.

At times the two teams played on offense like a runaway train, on a downhill grade with no brakes and some giant giving it a huge push to get it building up some momentum, it was THAT sorta organized mayhem until it looked like at a point in the second half the the two teams had tuckered each other out chasing themselves up and down the floor and alla sudden half court offense broke out. THAT was weird :D (well, that WAS weird, but I'm not sure I'd seen this before but perhaps even weirder was the two teams "exchanging" over and back violations on consecutive possessions, so that may actually be weirder than these two teams slowing down to a half court game out of the blue) Just when Grant looked like it was going to make a run to steal the game (and goodness knows they had their chances in the 2nd half) they just couldn't get shots to fall or not get swatted the hell away by Barnes or Dunn (and crap, even the guards were sending balls back).

I was watching coach McGee and she has a fire to her which was amusing. There were brief moments where her mannerisms and facial expressions were very DeMya like. That was fun to watch. She was trying to "discuss" a HORRIBLE non-call with a ref, McGee towered over the guy anyway, the heels she had on didn't help matters. She had a straight shot into his ear and was trying to further make her point by grabbing the guy's shoulder (in a nice way if that can be done lol) and the manuever he made to get her to take her hand off him before he had to T her up was PRICELESS.

It looked like Dunn is one of her projects since she lit into her a few times in the huddles. My seatmate made the observation that she is all kinds of crazy athletic...so they may very well have another one heading to a major...(if they can put about 40 pounds on her and find her a uni that fits - she looks the same as she did last year lol...like she had a Baugh hand-me-down uniform on and was 10 years younger than Baugh).

The playoffs are starting soon - they've concluded a 22-1 regular season by going undefeated in their conference. Can't see anybody standing in their way (but to use a cliche'...themselves, that offense is still CRAZYMAKING to me-their games are closer this year IMO because Baugh isn't there to clean up the messes when their offense goes sideways or catch the crazy passes) before they reach ARCO to defend their section title. They appear to be on a collision course with the Saint Mary's team they seem to meet every year.

But seriously, we need to bring a big group out there for a game next season for sure.

Great story....she very well could get a gig in the W someday (when they stop recycling coaches maybe) and could very well get a gig at a DI program. She impressed the hell out of me just in one game I saw. This article points to it, but you definitely get a sense watching her with that team that she is in firm control and she's trying to get a fire lit under her kids that matches the level of intensity she has. If McGee gets Dunn to match half her level and playing to the gifts she was born with, Dunn will be off the charts and headed to a major program and we'll have scouts from these programs in our backyard again.

We need to get out to a game next season. Or folks can get out to ARCO and see Sac High tonight playing, surprise surprise, St. Mary's @ 7:30p for the section title.

No repeat section title...

St. Marys and Sac High met for what had to be the 400th time give or take (;) for the section crown or some postseason title. Sadly, Sac High was not able to defend as San Joaquin section champs.

They were jumped early and often out the gate by the St. Mary's track team masquerading as its girls varsity basketball team, They were down 10-2 then 18-6 before they got their bearings against the full court press and the track meet on offense. They closed the first down 22-13 and REALLY got their act together with both offense and defense and closed the half 39-36.

Got down a bit again early in the 3rd and then came all the way back to tie the game 55 all at the end of 3. Every time that quarter and I do mean EVERY time they got the deficit to within 1 or 2 pts, they would give up a 3pter or turn the ball over. And I do mean EVERY TIME...that is until they finally tied it late. They take their first lead early in the 4th, then its tied again at 58. It was tied again I believe at 60 and then all hell broke lose. If I've got my math right on when it was tied etc...St Mary goes on a 21-8 run for the remainer of the 4th - I believe at just under 7 mins to go. 81-68 was the final in a game that if you took the first half of the first quarter and the 2nd half of the fourth quarter away, was incredibly exciting and entertaining.

They had a bad night from their starting point guard and no interior defense to speak of because St Mary's for the parts of the game where they exploded on Sac High was running at will and penetrating the paint at will. And given they had 15 or so players to Sac High's 8, didn't bode well for Sac High in a track meet because their kids were gassed much of the game, but still managed to make plays and shots - to their credit.

Two plays I noted (along with the tremendous number of NBA distance 3 point shots taken and made)...first was an offhand spin move reverse layup by St. Mary's. The second play brought the Arco Arena house down. The best way to describe it is on a 3 on 3 break - it was a football statue of liberty play mixed with a no look behind the back pass to a trailing player for a layup. If you can envision THAT, mentally envision something more ridiculous than that and you've have the play that happened. It was absolutely ridiculous and the arena went nuts.

One other "play" while the game was closely contested...had to do with a loose ball, that was VERY loose for a long time. I can't remember whose ball it was, but it finally ended up with a Sac High player for a Sac High score after what felt like an eternity of pile ups and tips and bodies on the floor trying to track it down. It first got away in the back court and changed possessions a few times before it got across mid court thanks to a Sac High player on the floor pushing it there lol, then more scrums and diving and poke aways and saves and scrums until finally it got to a place where the ONLY Sac High or St Mary's player NOT on the ground could pick it up and lay it in. It was awesome :)

In another humorous McGee/Ref moment, coach McGee, upset with a call she felt the ref closest to her missed, is chatting very animatedly with him. She again, at 6'4" (plus heels) is towering over him. He's got his back to her and as she ends her conversation wraps him up in a bear hug and rubs the top of his bald head. That'll get you t'ed at the next level I think...;)

Those who attended the Monarchs event on Weds and recall the question during Ruthie's Q&A about Sac High and Pam McGee, Ruthie was on hand tonight watching the game very intently from her usual spot along the corner, where the players' family usually sit during the Monarchs season.

Next up for Sac High, the NorCals and another shot perhaps at St. Marys or the #1 team in the country (according to MaxPreps and USA Today)San Francisco's Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep. I haven't checked SHCP's night, but they were trying to wrap up their section title (and their undefeated seasson this weekend). But everybody is anticipating St. Mary's and SHCP meeting next weekend for the right to represent the north in the state finals.

Deja vu all over again?

Sac High's season ended in not quite the same fashion it did last season, but at the hands of the same team. They traveled tonight to San Francisco to take on NorCal Div III #1 seed Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep and lost 67-46 in the semi finals. Sacred Heart will meet St. Mary's at ARCO on Saturday for the NorCal title in what should be a defensive track meet if such a thing could possibly exist.

Congratulations on another great season to coach McGee and her team.
