ESPN ranks Kings dead last in future power rankings

It's ESPN. I'm surprised they even remembered to include Sacramento.

(Not that we aren't bad, but c'mon. The Lakers deserve that last spot right now.)

But they’re a big market (that won’t have any picks or cap space for the next half decade)!

also I’m half convinced the national media is somehow buying into the narrative that Frank Vogel and AD’s injuries are at total fault for this bad season.

2nd to last. Just missed the last spot by less than a hundred. The Kings missing the play in was a gigantic deal. Anyone who says otherwise, they’re not worrying about a capital call from Vivek.

And if Vivek called I'd say take a loan out on the equity he's gained since buying the team. Any illusions of NBA owners suffering in any way are for not. However the Maloofs are probably so po'd.

It's fair. Management sucks. Market is third worse. Outside of Domas, no all star level player.

Domas is a 2 time all-star and still only 25 years old and Fox (only 24 years old) is one of the best scoring PG in the league. If the Kings hit big on the Draft Lottery and score a legit cornerstone in this years draft (i.e. Holmgren, J. Smith, Banchero, or Murray) and get a good new coach, I think the Kings could turn it around fairly quickly.

Owners are obligated to provide $$$$.

Sure, but I only see one certainty there, which is Domas.

The odds are against getting a good coach and the odds are against getting a top pick. As for Fox, he’s entering year six on a max deal, has never won in the league, and has never made an all star team.

Here’s a random list of point guards, who were good, but not quite elite during their era:

Billups. First all star team in year 6. Made 5 all star teams throughout his 17 yr career.
Baron Davis. First all star team in year 3. Made two total throughout his 17 yr. career.
Mike Conley. Has made one all star team. In yr 12. 12 yr career.
Mike Bibby. Zero all star teams during his 14 yr career.
JWill. Zero all star teams during his 13 year career.
Jrue. All star in year 7. 13 year career.

Fox is in the same tier as these guys, but if each of the above players were the same age as Fox, I’d take each before Fox. Think it’s probably time to stop referring to him as someone, who has the potential to be elite. He’s a good player, who might make an all star team once or twice if things line up. But a true, elite player? That ship sailed a long time ago.

a good example could be someone like Kyle Lowry. Didn't make his first All-Star appearance until he was on his third team. Only averaged over 20 PPG twice in his career and is a 6 time All-Star and NBA Champion.

Sadly, this is nothing significantly short of the truth. We're doomed unless the front office can change things around with a solid string of A++ drafts, beginning this year.

They’re doomed anyway. Because they’ve had great drafts the past 2 years and just traded one of those players away and there’s apparently some here at KF who want them to trade the other player too.

What’s the point of having a string of A++ drafts if they just trade those players away for established vets to go all-in on the play-in?

It depends. If Monte can trade every one of our first round picks for a 25 year old two-time All Star, I don't see that as a bad thing. I'm against trading Davion Mitchell because he's an elite defender and we need to keep every elite defender we can get, but if someone is offering us another 25 year old All Star at a wing position, we'd have to at least think about it right? People were freaking out that we drafted Mitchell instead of Franz Wagner, Josh Giddey, or Jonathan Kuminga. Not that this would happen, but what if Boston offers us Jaylen Brown or Phoenix offers us Devin Booker, are we "mortgaging our future" to make that kind of a trade? Context matters. Sabonis isn't 32 year old Mitch Richmond -- Chris Webber was 25 years old when he played his first game for Sacramento.

This ranking is as pointless as those draft day grades we see every year. It's just shameless click bait. The Lakers have no prospects, are likely missing the playoffs this year and have no picks in this draft, owe multiple upcoming first round picks to the Pelicans, and their two superstars are: (1) 37 years old and (2) 29 years old and has never played a full season without getting injured. There's no scenario where they don't have the bleakest short-term future of any team in the league. ESPN hilariously ranked them 3rd overall in pre-season Power Rankings though so this is just more crow then they can fit down their throat I suppose.

I'm not intending to put you on the spot, but I honestly checked to make sure I wasn't looking at a really old thread that kings fans posted in during much darker times. I think we have a likely shot at the playoffs next year! We made significant upgrades to personnel and only really lack in the coaching department. I expect playoffs next year and would actually feel let down if it doesn't happen.

the West will probably be stacked next year but this off-season is the best chance we have had to right the ship in a while. I’d say we have a better than not chance of being a watchable competitive team next season.

Al it takes us one good season and the narrative can shift in regards to National media coverage

It's really hard to predict how the west is going to look next year. The way things are going, there's a good chance that the Jazz end up re-tooling the roster/Ainge-ing things up. The Nuggets are presumably finally going to get Jamal Murray and MPJ back next season but are also now entirely capped out and lack the draft assets to make any additional moves. The Clippers are a deep team but also have to bank on Kawhi and PG coming back completely to make any noise and are seeing a large part of their roster hitting the back end of their primes. The Pelicans have draft capital to make moves with in every season after this one and have a solid Ingram/CJ/Jonas core to build around but they also have to deal with the elephant-sized Zion in the room. The Spurs are the Spurs as long as Pop is around but they're lacking top line talent (Murray's great season be damned) and who knows how much longer he'll be coaching them. Portland could theoretically hop back up to playoff-level next season but that's banking on them keeping Dame, him coming back healthy, them nailing their pick, and Chauncey Billups being a good coach. It's hard to see the Lakers' situation getting significantly better next season, especially with Malik Monk essentially playing his way out of their price range.

Surely, things will change in the off-season when some desperate team trades the Lakers a star and picks for Russ's huge contract or something but there's a chance there will be more open spots next year than this year.

I get your jazz. I really do. But, just based on the simple, but hurtful, fact that we have not seen postseason action since the Stone Age, I am not expecting diddly squat from this franchise until they actually prove me wrong. I've expected things way too much since that last playoff appearance, only to be left feeling disappointed. I'm not playing that game anymore. I have no expectations. Time for the team to prove me wrong.

except no one will.

Good 2 way wings are hard to find. It’s why Vlade’s trade for Barnes was such a win. They are so important and so hard to find it is why teams with competent GM’s reach for them in the draft.

Williams, Vassell, Brown, Giddey even Wagner were considered reaches by most.
