espn has their lottery up early this year. the first try ended up w/ the kings at the 5th spot.

here is what espn thinks these teams would do with the first pick

cleveland - perry jones
minnesota - perry jones
washington - perry jones
milwaukee - perry jones
los angeles - kyrie irving
sacramento - kyrie irving
toronto - kyrie irving
new jersey - kyrie irving
detroit pistons - kyrie irving

it looks like a 2 horse race from espns results

Perry Jones scares the hell out of me. Classic potential vs production argument. He hasn't done squat in the college game to actually deserve being #1 overall.

In fairness to P. Jones though, he does play in a system that's hard for big men offensively. Still, he has been very underwhelming. He's too much of a project to be taken that high. I'm saying no thanks to him at this point. I take Irving first and I don't think twice.

I haven't seen a clear #1 this year (with apologies to Irving who was well on his way to establishing himself as just that before the injury) but the top 5 or 6 guys would all be solid additions to the team. Perry Jones is a bigger risk than most because he doesn't seem ready for the NBA yet but his skill level and athleticism is jaw-dropping at times. Terrence Jones has been very productive both on offense and defense this year for Kentucky and he's got a pretty diverse skillset for a forward. Jared Sullinger has been dominating for Ohio State with an advanced post game and great feel for playing together with his teammates. He looks very mature for a freshman. I haven't seen a lot of Derrick Williams myself, but from what I have seen he's looked very impressive too. He's shooting a ridiculous percentage from all over the floor this year which eases concern that he can make it as a small forward in the NBA. And then there's Harrison Barnes, the pre-season consensus number 1, who I suspect is going to start to break out around tournament time like DeMar DeRozan did a couple seasons ago and make a lot of GMs consider drafting him for his potential. All of those guys have star potential and there's not much of a talent drop off going into the mid first round either. It actually looks like a pretty deep draft this year -- just heavy on swingmen and without a homerun pick at the top.

I "won" the lottery for us with my first press - chances of that happening in reality - 0%

Kyrie Irving was the choice.

How many of these guys will actually be in the draft??

Since this is the last draft under the old CBA, I suspect that just about any college player that has a chance of being drafted in the first round will throw his hat into the ring. It appears that under the new CBA, newly drafted players will have less money to start and the amount of years guaranteed will be reduced. For instance, rookies salaries are for 5 years with only the first 2 years guaranteed and with the player being a restriced freeagent in his last year if he is offered whatever the mininum required is. I believe under the new proposal only the first year would be guaranteed, and for a lot less money than their getting now.

As a result, I expect every able bodied player to apply for the draft. It might be their last chance to start with big bucks.

Kyle Irving would be my first choice, barely beating out Terrence Jones, my second choice. I have Sullinger at 3. Enes Kanter at 4. Kemba Walker at 5. Perry Jones at 6, and Harrison Barnes at 7. I have Kanter at 4 purely on what I've read about him and on the two pre-college USA against the world Games in which he simply dominated everyone else there. Its a damm shame he didn't play for Kentucky this year. Perry Jones is loaded with talent, and he scares me to death. In my humble opinion Terrence Jones can do everything Perry can do, and do it with more intensity and consistency. The only advantage Perry has is a couple of inches of height. I'm still waiting for Barnes to show me something. And, I don't like the comparison to DeRozan. He's not nearly as athletic as DeRozan, and has a pretty good skill set already in place. So far, he just doesn't impact the games he's in.

No I don't think he compares to DeRozan in play style at all, just that I watched USC a lot that year and he looked pretty lost until the end of conference play when he started to play how everyone expected him to play all year. And then he was one of the standout players in the Pac-10 tournament. I can see that happening with Barnes this year because players that talented always seem to assert themselves eventually. And I hesitate to rank these guys right now because I expect Barnes will start to live up to his potential before the season is over.

If I did rank them right now I think I would go...

Kyrie Irving, Jared Sullinger, Terrence Jones, Perry Jones, Harrison Barnes, Derrick Williams, Kemba Walker

...but Perry Jones and Harrison Barnes are ranked where they are mostly on potential right now and I have no idea where to place Kanter because I know he's very good and deserves a mention but I haven't actually seen him play.

Didn't see enough of Irving to have an opinion. I have seen Perry Jones and I don't like him at all for a top 5 pick. Terrance Jones? Need to see more of him.

The guys that I really like are Kemba Walker and Derrick Williams. Sullinger is probably in their class, but I haven't seen enough of him. Walker and Williams elevate their teams considerably; they have a huge, huge impact on their teams' winning percentage. I'd be very happy with either of those two on the Kings. I think they would make an immediate positive impact.

I have no problem with the top seven you have there. What order they'll be picked in is up for grabs. Depends on whose picking and what their needs are. For instance, if Minny ends up with the top pick, would they really take another PG? Not likely, so that would move Irving down at least one slot. A lot depends on how they play in the tournaments prior to the end of the season. And of course the farther your team advances in the tournament, the more exposure you get. I'm not very high on North Carolina this year. They seem to be underachieving to some degree, and might be primed to get bounced early. But they might start to get it together by tournament time. My early pick to win the whole thing, Ohio St.....

Just curious, have you seen Jimmer Fredette play? Now you want to talk about having an impact on yout team. He is the team...

Not to mention there are about 4 Euros being mentioned as lotto bound as well. Valuncias, Kanter, Vesely and Montajunas all need to be factored in. I've obviously never seen any of them play, but am intrigued by both Valuncias and Vesely based on what I've read online.

I would take Irving #1, but if we had the #3 or #4, I would not flinch at Harrison Barnes. I agree with the idea that if he has a breakout around ACC Tourney/NCAA Tourney time that it would skyrocket his stock. GM's have loved this kid for years, I think they're just waiting for him to just give them some validation.

Everywhere but the 2 and 5 is a need and we could use an upgrade. That said, I would take BPA: Irving, PJones, TJones, Barnes, Sullinger, Kanter, Derrick Williams, etc. All can fill a need.
