ESPN: Miss NHL's all star weekend? - Miss your next game

#1
The NHL will force erstwhile All-Stars Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom to miss the Detroit Red Wings' first game after the All-Star break for failing to attend this weekend's festivities.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman imposed the policy, established at last year's general managers meetings, to legitimize injury claims and improve All-Star Weekend attendance. The policy states All-Stars who are injured must have missed at least the last game before the All-Star break in order to be excused; otherwise, they must sit out the first regular-season game after the break.
Rest here..

Wow. No kidding.

Good for them -- was wondering about that when I heard it. Knew that the NBA is touchy about that and did not think hockey could just let it go without undermining their All Star game entirely.

Good job? Please, name at least some things???
Well, this thing about punishing players sitting out the all-star game for 1.

Shootouts.

Rule changes that make for a faster and more exciting game to watch.

Maybe I'm just focusing on the positive things he did while ignoring negatives, but he's no Bud Selig

Well, nothing super right about this one. I'd say, it is a very questionable decision. Lindstrom and Datsyuk are actually injured and Pavel played his last game with serious pain. Obviously, Detroit wants to give these guys some time to heal, not to rest. It is not like they are in Hawaii. Crosby also has a minor injury. What about him? He won't have problems because he did not play his last game before All star break. So, according to the rules, do not play one game before Montreal and you are OK. Nice. The Dark Knight can punish two great veterans but I doubt that he would do the same against the golden boys of hockey. Nobody can touch Ovechkin, Malkin and Crosby .. not the Greek Gods.
Again, I do not say that it was a bad decision but I do not see anything right either.

Shootouts

You mean the ones in regular games after overtime? It is kinda fun and it is good for show in places like Nashville, Tampa or Atlanta but it hurts hockey and most hardcore fans do not like it. Fortunately, we do not have this in playoffs (think why?). Again, this is a controversial decision.

First of all, do you really think it was his idea?
So-called Lemaire's neutral zone traps was a nightmare for hockey for years. And Gary was a detached onlooker. Fans, mass media and players association deserve much more credit for the changes.

I honestly can't really argue with your post, because you make good points. I just have to say that I think the top 2 are good decisions. Now the injury one does suck if you are in fact injured, but All-star games are supposed to be for the fans, and often we see a lot of stars wanting to rest during this time rather than play, and I think he had to try something to correct this.

As for the rule changes, you may be right about that, but Bettman deserves at least some credit for actually making the changes
